Just been have a think about this over the past few weeks, but does your trade-in price reflect on what car (new) your going to buy, or should we be asking what my car is worth before letting a dealer know what car your in the market for.

No, I just pick the car I want and research what a fair retail price is before talking to a dealer. Then research a fair retail price for the car I'm trading. I'll trade my existing car for up to $2K under retail then haggle the dealer down on the sticker price for the new car. Usually try to get on roads and warranty thrown in.

Your trade in price will be awful, no matter what. Never accept trade in price, always haggle. If your trade in price is impressive, usually the cost of the newer car is larger than it should be.
It doesn't matter what you get for the trade, just so long as: NEW CAR minus OLD CAR equalls LOWEST POSSIBLE PRICE
