Default Melbourne Roads Today.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/tra...-1226486984920

Got caught up this morning. Did not get stuck to long because I leave after 9am. But bad for Melbourne to stop.

Im gathering by the web comments to the above article that the variable speed signs stopped working and so the tunnel was closed?

In short ....

Because of a computer glitch, they closed the two main (and only) east west tunnels in Melbourne all day. The computers control, speed signs & speed cameras ...... OH and the exhaust fans and CTV. The back up system also went to poo.

not the variable signs that stopped working

It was the main computer system that runs the safety systems ( both the main and back up stopped )

Ie if there was a fire in the tunnels then they could not say if the emergency stuff like exhaust fans, fire sprinklers and lighting etc would work so they shut them down for public safety

as a small compensation they allowed free travel on the rest of the citylink system

still not good for transport in melb but better than the poss that it couldbe the death of who knows how many

I say good on them for doing what they did thinking safety before $$$$

Yep .... close it because of saftey reason

BUT .....

It should not have happened in the first place. Not in this day and age.

It shows that 2 tunnels are not adequate for Melb. 1 road east to west ...... really??

Building more trains in not the answer ..... no one knows how to catch them and can understand Mykey thingy anyway.

Nothing to do with speed signs, it was the lane direction signs....Computer malfunction for the whole day.....Don't you love technology!!!

Hate to be in an aircraft with a computer system like they have for the tunnels. Commercial aircraft rely on computers for their flight systems and autopilots. Oh sorry, the computer system is down so we are going to crash....

So it is possible to have computer systems that are 100% reliable. Just that Transurban hasn't invented that system yet, just like Myki hasn't.

Australia invented the black box (flight recorder) in aircraft and was at the forefront of technology for years. We have slipped back markedly.

Glad someone clarified... as the comments left on that news article had people saying they should put up fixed speed sign limits and opened the road up.

If the whole system failed then sorry they have no choice... if the fans, fire system are down... too bad so sad.

Would have to agree. If the back up also failed there would be some serious issues there.

We always use citylink for family events as Dad's side are all in the eastern suburbs, it makes life so much easier paying like $11 for the trip and cruising along a highway then trying to cross Melbourne with its 50,000 intersections, roundabouts, and avoiding the other 50,000 people like me who have NFI what they're doing trying to cross that crap hole.

As if on cue.. there is a new show on CH7 right now... showing CCTV footage captured around Australia.

Showing footage from a Sydney tunnel where there appeared to be some sort of domestic in the middle of the road in the tunnel. Not to mention plenty of other scarey stuff.

It was pretty entertaining reading some of the comments on the news sites today because most didn't even read the article. Blaming the etag system for being down and they didn't want people to ride for free being the favorite.

It's only as good as the propeller heads who cut the code and no human is perfect.

Aircraft however have multiple redundancies built in and are tested 1000s of times over because when they fall out of the sky people tend to die.

They still crash and they did when when there were no computers either.

yes Jim in this side of things it is a good thing that they closed the tunnels down but as Auslandau stated it should never have happened because of a computer glitch

the place that i work we have 5 computers to protect each machine from computer brake down and we are only talking a product that sells for $30 -80 thousand dollars

In reality what is a life worth more than the product that i make so why didnt they have more systems in place so this didnt happen

even the radio over ride stopped working

Be interesting to see what the cause of this glitch was.

If its "cost" cutting during the building... one hopes people will be sacked, but usually they dont.

Holy ****, and here I am complaining about paying $4 to travel through the Clem 7 tunnel to entirely miss Brisbane CBD.

It was actually the core network switches (both primary and secondary) that failed.
It appears that when the primary switch fell over due to a hardware fault (these do happen) the secondary one could not handle the traffic and therefore itself decided to fall over.

It took awhile of listening to a few reports/ reading a few articles before they finally said what it actually was.
Damn them for generalising everything to a "computer glitch."

I work in IT and can completely understand why they would take the whole day to remedy the situation, I wouldn't be surprised if their core switch took up half a rack or has a whole rack dedicated to itself.
It was their fault on the other hand for not properly testing redundancy and their backup systems.

Would've hated to be that tech getting a call at 4am in the morning saying the core switch is down :|

I agree, I'm glad I wasn't the one called out for that.
I am curious to know the type of core switch they do use and whether when it was designed if it was scoped to cope with this much traffic, also when their last tech refresh occurred if ever.

We've had something similar happen but when the primary went offline for maintenance the secondary coincidentally had a h/w fault...fun day.
