Hey guys.
Got a few things i been thinking about recently. I am moving to melb for work and just near calder park hehe. So i am thinking i will HAVE to get something suitable for some fun on the track and maybe the drags also hehe. Now just to clarify I am only going for FUN at this stage. Not wanna race yet. I know i will polly want to move up when i get into it but not yet. Ok so I have to many options i been thinkign about. JAP or Aussie car. Do i go for something like a skyline, silvia, etc etc. Or something like a falcon. (sorry dont REALLY wanna go commodore). I had a great thought of a cheap EB2/ED and transplant a BA xr8 motor n box in. Dunno if it will fit etc etc yet but just a thought. Now my budget would be about 10k. Maybe more depending on car and condition etc etc. But around the 10k mark or i will get killed by the missus lol. Other thing is this car will be driven and registered. Not so worried about engineering at this stage but I would like it to be engineered. Well legalish hehe.. Any suggestions on any sort of combo would be great. Cheers Matt |

If your budget is only 10K then get an old Escort... they're Small, relatively powerful with the 2.0l engine and RWD which will make it more fun.
Second choice would be a Datsun 1600 for the same reasons... There is plenty of cheap and reliable go fast stuff for these old rally warriors. Anything else will cost you way more then 10K once you've modified it to make it suitable for track work, and the upkeep and maintanance will be allot too.

yeah i have thought about that too. I am just looking at various options atm. Like i said i not out to get blistering times, i just wanna have some fun. Maybe do a few of these rallies like targa and that.
Just fun. So if i bought EG a silvia (which most are modified in some way now neways) I would prolly drive it as is. Till the mod bug bites hehe. (and money permits) |

targa as in Targa Tasmania? If so I don't think the Silvia would be as easy to gain entry. They are pretty picky now in as much as they have sooo many entrants and they give preference to well known "performance" cars particularly those relevant to Australian motoring history. Go the Eski.

Depends how durable you feel. a westfield or lotus 7 replica you could get into for around 15

hehe found a video on youtube on a mr2 n HSV GTS on a track. GTS was lil quicker. about a second i think. But near the end a datto 180b rounds them both up with ease at the end of the main straight. just steers right under then hehe.
Had a FJ20 turbo transplant apparetly. Guess i will get the money happening and just see what comes up at the time. In the rallies to i meant the more relaxed rally and motokana etc. Targa was one that come into my head but must not be the one i thinking of. Remember i only wanna get into it for a hell of a lot of fun hehe. Only problem with a eski it not gunna be very quick on the drag strip also. I know i asking a lot for a drag/circuit car but i dont want super quci times. just fun. So will need a lil bit of balls down low. I seen a Proton Ute on ebay for sale. But has full Lancer EVO running gear FULLY engineered. That would be fun lil track car n go well at drags too |

I think for 10k youre going to have to decide where you want a track car to perform. Either 10k will buy you something powerful that will go well on the strip but handle like a dog, or something that will handle well but wont set the strip on fire. Also to get something road registred will cost alot more and add weight- its harder to get a cage etc for road cars

For 10K you're not going to get anything that's quick on the strip or the track, maybe an old GSXR 1100 would be better if 10K is your budget and you want to go quick!

haha funny you say that about a TX3.
Coz i got one. Only reason i dont wanna use it for track is the gearbox. Mine is in great condtion and i dont wanna wreck it. Want to actually sell it to help fund this project. |

yeah i am starting to lean that way. either datto or eskie.
least the eskie is ford hehe i guess I will just see what happens with money etc. Might have got over this all when i get the money up. But a cheap datto or eskie dedicated track would be fun. n like ya said. few hundred for the car and rest on mods. and slicks |

Go the Datto............. everytime.
Plenty of 510's (that's 1600's) for sale from 7k-20k depending on how far you want to go. All regoed, usually with FJ20's in them. You will find they have already done the hard stuff, whic means you can still have it as a daily driver....... I have had both race and road 510's, although none were turbo (carbies are my thing) but you have a SERIOUS amount of fun, and there are so many forums etc, that you will always find answers to any questions you might have.......... |

Matt,
I had a Datsun 240Z until recently. They are an awesome car for a bit of fun. Especially one that's been upgraded with a 2.6 or 2.8 motor which is common. They're virtually bulletproof and easy to work on. Parts aren't usually a problem. And the beauty is, they are a classic car in their own right. Trouble is finding a good one - they love rusting. Consider 260Z also. Rick. |

i think i am hooked on the datto idea now. a mate is doing up a celica so we will have fun together with similar era cars lol.
i am liking the idea of the 1600 with fj20 turbo. some on ebay engineered and all. seems just about any brakes off later gtrs etc fit with minor mods. and also gearboxs n diffs are very interchangable. this is looking the way to go. |

mmm. it is a discuussion on a road car also. If i could get a engineered one which seems to be plenty about they just sell quick lol.
I am liking the idea of a datto with fj20. Or sr20 if engineered. Project may be a while off yet. Depends when i can sell my TX3 to help fund it. Anyone wanna buy a tx3 lol |

A mate of mine just bought a super sedan,its a commodore,with a 383 chev and hillborn injection,dry sump etc etc,the slicks on it are HUGE, but it is a very difficult car to drive,he bought all this plus spare with an enclosed trailer,you couldnt build this for 4 times the cost.
Have a look around for a 4 cyl super sedan or an ex rally car,im sure you could find something in your budget,and get it heaps cheaper than building yourself. A place to keep an eye on would be www.my105.com |

the old AE86 corollas, there good drift cars and pretty cheap.
other than that i recommend a nissan 180sx (plenty around), even a CA18DET with the 1.8L turbo is very reliable and very very fast, rwd with LSD. other than that u can always get a swift GTI with a pearl paint job and a black coloured bonnet + 2 speakers form a home stereo system

If i was spending 10 thousand on a track/road car i'd get an early 90's MX5.
Later on down the track (get it ) if you wanted to make it quicker, its easier to make a smaller car go like a v8 than it is to get a falcon or comodore to handle like the MX5 |

The MX5 would be my pick (after the Eski). MX5s are great little cars. Very nimble and well balanced. Great gearbox. Very light. AND REAR WHEEL DRIVE. Yep, definitely my second pick.

Get a 88 saab 900 turbo and just crank up the boost.
They only cost $2000 and the motors are near on bulletproof. Plus the looks on peoples faces makes it worthwhile too.

EA ($500-1000)-EB($1000-1500)-ED ($2000+) falcon- Get rid of everything you don't need off it (regain some $$$ from selling pieces off), get an LSD out of an Spack or XR6 ($300-$500?, sit a manual in ($600), some nice firm shocks ($1000), buy a turbo kit ($3000-5000) and set aside the rest of the budget for race seats, helmet, and rego.
