In the spirit of this thread about FG wagons:
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11345986 I thought I would start another, this time about the FG Fairlane, and what might have been. We know full well there isn't and never will be an FG Fairlane, however what I'd like to know is: what would it have been? Would it have simply been a stretched G6ET, or something much more substantial? Would it have had unique front and rear styling like Fairlanes in the past had, or would it have been more like the B-series? I've always been a bit of a closet luxo barge fan. The later series of Fairlanes and LTD's I've always liked, even though the B series didn't look that much different from the Falcon and Fairmont. Notwithstanding this being a Ford Forum and me being a Ford fanatic, I've a bit of a soft spot for the WM Caprice as well. What say you? What would the FG Fairlane have been?

For a start a V8..8 speed auto..full leather trim..Harmon Kardon sound system, electric driver and passenger seats with heater. Active cruise control, rain sensing wipers, lane change indicators in the wing mirrors. or just build it with the Mondeo Titanium equipment. But it might be back, if the new Lincoln comes here...

Given what the B-series lanes ended up being, I think its fair to assume that they wouldve been just stretched G6E's.
Not that thats a bad thing, I suppose. |

Yes the G6ET is a great car, but I would have thought a Fairlane could have been a bit more 'lux' along the lines of what csv8 posted...sans 8 speed auto.

If it was to get any cred back and differentiate in from the Falcon, apart from the longer wheel base of coarse, is it would have needed to have a longer, more pronounced snout balanced with a longer boot area to give it some real presence. A bit more bling happening across the front and rear but in a subtle way and a reverse of the Falcon grills in as much as a larger upper grill and smaller lower. Then give it every electronic gadget in the parts bin FoA could get their hands on.
Personally I'd have no problem with n/a and turbo 6 variants and leave a V8 option to FPV. Bushbasher

I miss the Fairlane. They were great cars.
I think an FG Fairlane would have definitely had the Coyote V8 and 8spd auto. Would have gone like the clappers too. An Ecoboost V6 would have gone great too. This is a bit like discussing what Elvis would look like if he was still alive.

V8 and 8 speed auto are all pie in the sky, the reality would have been a stretched G6E IMO with points of contention being styling (if they kept the SWB similarity such as the B series or went back to a distinct look like AU) and if an LTD was also part of the lineup.

Wheelbase. rear doors and boot all lengthened by 100 mm. For a more American look,
bolder front and rear styling coupled with raising of door belt line to match front and rear guards. |

I wonder if Ford would do a tarted up G6ET with different front and rear styling and some tech from US Fords and be able to sell it as a locally badged Lincoln...

It would have been like the BF Fairlane, very little money spent on it and very little to differentiate it from the G6E. It would have basically been like a 100mm longer G6E. They would have had next to no money to spend on it.
Maybe a different grille at the front and a bit bigger boot, with a chrome strip or something across the boot to look a bit different. Headlights and taillights the same chrome ones as G6E Turbo. No extra equipment than the G6E. |
