You will find idiots anywhere.
Sold my EL XR8 on eBay a few years back, first person to come out and test drive bought it and I was on the high side of the market. These days I would probably go Facebook buy and sell sites first, or eBay, last five cars I bought have all been bought on Facebook buy and sell sites. This includes my current XB GS Ute that I drive and my XB GS 351 Fairmont sedan which I got at a bargain price. I currently have three project cars for sale, but have not advertised them at all apart from my signature here, once I am organised to sell they will go on Facebook buy and sell sites, but that won't be for another 12 months or so, as I have other priorities and I have the space to store them in a shed under cover.

I've sold quite a few on Gumtree without much hassle but haven't done so for about 2 years so things may have changed.

I've sold most of my cars through word of mouth (to friends/friends of friends)
Used carsales for one of my cars many years ago. Never had any enquiries. Likewise used gumtree about a year ago, no bites, not even any scammers. Ended up selling it to my mechanic. |

I sold a car last week. Put it on a couple of forums first for a few days then it went straight onto carsales.com. Sold it within a week.

In my experience, giving the car a detail and parking it with a sign has been the best way to advertise. It depends on the car and location though. Gumtree is better than ebay or carsales

Facebook buy/swap/sell pages are full of flogs, who want to swap you their 300 year old faded red VN Commodore, a pack of winnie blues and a slab of VB for your car.
Gumtree results in scammers emailing you flat out about your rare as hens teeth 1992 EB Falcon GLi, who are working as some undersea jehovas witness marine biologist who is working in China but their agent will collect the car and they'll pay for it via Western Union money transfer or Paypal. I found premium car sales ad works real well, I paid money for a premium gumtree ad as well and just got the scam emails from it. |

I listed one recently on carsales and gumtree. Sold through gumtree to the first person who looked at it. I Wish I hadn't spent the $65 now, but you never know what is going to happen.

Gumtree, no question.
Sure, you will get a pile of automated scam emails, but they're not hard to pick and delete. Yes, you will have to deal with flogs, but you're going to get that anywhere you advertise privately. Facebook and forums I would use for specialities

LOL........it's not called scumtree for nothing.
With carsales I sold it to the first person who called. No scammers, low-ballers, oil rig workers, just an easy transaction.

carsales, i don't bother with gumtree or ebay
i have bought plenty of cars off gumtree and ebay but i find carsale weeds out the idiots and tyre kickers plus carsales is full of overpriced cars so whenyou put a midrange price in you seem to get some decent hits i just sold my 2001 commo wagon for asking price of $4750, i was going to put in on for $3900 but the missus said the other ones on the site are up to $7k with ave being $5k so put it on for $4750 and sold it to the first looker in the first week.

Gumtree hands down for me, its free and i've bought and sold heaps of cars using the site and only had 1 issue which resolved itself pretty quickly.
My how times have changed though, i remember hanging out for Thursdays to get the paper issue of the Trading Post from the shop. |

Carsales premium ad every time. Most recent sale being a relatives VY11 with 300ks. Good detail, good clean, and gone before the sticker arrives. (I had it on gumtree for a week before and also had it on two different facebook groups).

I think each selling channel has its place and it really depends on what type of car.
Great days...getting it fresh off the press at stupid o'clock, then stressing as I reconcile wanting to be the first to ring but not wanting to ring too early as to **** them off. |

There is hundreds, every town/suburb pretty much has at least one buy/swap/sell site, then there is special model ones, antique ones, horse ones, pet ones, 4wd ones, trailer ones, heavy vehicle ones etc etc etc etc

Learn from my mistake. Had my Territory looking like a million dollars. Parked it safely/legally in a designated car parking bay on the side of the road. Not in a stupid spot. Had some nice "For Sale" signs printed up and put them on the rear glass windows.
Got hit with a $500 fine. "Fail to Display Safety Certificate" was the crime I didn't know you had to do that. I do now though! Since then I've bought and sold a few cars through Carsales and really liked it. |

If I have a car for sale, I will place it on every site I can, but would always have a CarSales ad, no matter what. In fact the last 4-5 cars I have sold over the years have been from CarSales ad's.
If I'm buying, it depends on the car. If it is worth only a few grand, I'll look everywhere, if its worth over 5G's Ill check CarSales, Gumtree and eBay, anything more the say 7-8Gs I'll really only regularly look at CarSales. I figure if a car is worth anything, then people will pay for an ad. If they don't then the car isn't worth it. That's what works for me.

Sounds like you're in QLD where, I believe, you need a roadworthy cert before you can advertise it. Strange law that one.

Gumtree first, because its free and that makes sense.
Give it a couple of weeks and then hit carsales. But yes I remember it being ~$20 so the $65 these days seems like a bit of a joke.

Just remember to choose the correct car model in Car sales. I am looking for a Falcon ute and it amazes me how many idiots get this wrong, including dealers, like :
Gas instead of petrol 2 seater as a 3 seater BF As BA Passenger Airbag when none And vica versa. God knows how many specify XLS as XL One twit advertised an FG petrol as BF gas. How hard can it be? The best one was the guy who puts a cabin photo as the main pic and has a woman's day magazine in the door storage, and various other bits of crap lying about. So much effort spent on presentation.

Yep I used to drive 1/2hr to a newsagency in Moorebank because they opened at 5am with Trading Post hot off the press. Ringing sellers at 5:30am from a phone booth, it was more work but actually easier to find a good deal. |

Gumtree but state on the bottom of the add.
No scammers, timewasters or lowballers and will not answer emails. Helps stop the undesirables. |

We've just launched a new website for buying and selling cars www.carwant.com.au and also set up as a Ford Forums sponsor.
Our site is a bit different, where someone who wants to buy their next used car and add what they want (make, model, series, etc.) and then add the price range they want to pay, as well as the year range. Car sellers can add their car details and if the two match (buyer and seller), the buyer will receive an email to view. Then, it's up to the buyer to make contact with the seller (so the buyer isn't flooded with calls or emails). The site is free if you want to buy or sell a car. We're only new, but feel free to use it if you're buying or selling your car. And yes, i also remember hanging around the newsagent on Thursday morning waiting for the trading post! |

Just had a good run with Gumtree. Listed the BA XLS ute last Friday and the new owner collected it tonight. In all honestly there were over 200 views and only 2 people made contact with me and both from a nearby suburb. The first guy was chasing a fairly rare 3 seat ute configuration and I was seriously considering doing a conversion if I could find the componets. Luckily the second guy was keen for the ute as advertised and he went ahead with the purchase.
