the "THUMBS UP"

hey everyone. lately been driving past some very nice fords and other cars and didnt know how to acknowledge their greatness. so i decided to start giving them the thumbs up. i know its old school and dorky or watever but i think its a good way for forum members to communicate. so anyone sees a car they like give them the thumbs up and it may just be a forum member. then maybe post on this thread and see how many people get to know each other better etc...

I did that to a guy a few weeks ago, he was in a shmick zg fairlane and he just grinned.

But i do wonder what has happened to all the people that used to wave when travelling, So many people used to do it, but its not the case anymore!

I give the thumbs up to any nice car regardless of brand. Sometimes even pull over and have chats about our cars and general chit chat. Good way to meet people and cops

I was cruising down the M1 at the gold coast a few months ago when i first go the Front bar on and sum bloke ina Blue BA XR8 passed me on the inside lane, all i saw was a big shit eating grin and a nod in my direction

That was more then enough for me (considering i was thinking the same about his stock XR8 lol!)

And of all people i hada VL commy give me the thumbs up on the weekend, its an awesome feeling to know other drivers (even VL's!) appreciate what you have done!

I had a group of shirtless, beer drinking yobbos bow down to my car the other day, as in "we're not worthy" lol.

I always have a chuckle to myself when young blokes in Commodores are mesmorised by my Ford as I have been a passionate hater of Commodores for over 25 years.

All I get round here is carloads of morons so challenged they cant even put a hat on straight asking me to "smoke it up mate". Drives me up the wall!

As for waving at passing cars, sometimes when im driving up north and passing all the country people we play a game where the driver lifts up their hand to wave and we see how many waves back we get. I find the further north you go, the more waves you get.

How this for a laugh. People telling you to smoke up a stock AWD car! Even if I could I wouldn't do it.

Burnouts are pointless and frankly I don't understand the big deal about them.

I also tend to give the thumbs up when I see a really nice car. But I am careful, because some times people may get the impression that you are flipping them the bird :P

I've done it, last one I did it to was some guy in a clean and schmick N12 Pulsar ET Turbo on the Eastern Distributor. After seeing it he smiled and nodded, dropped back about 20m and dropped a gear or 3. That thing was absolutely crazy. My first car was a N12 Pulsar and seeing the car brought back memories of the fun times I had in the Pulsar.

I usually give a driver the 1 index single finger, bolt up right while my hand is on the steering wheel.

its something my dad always did to truckies while cruising interstate. Problem was the truckies usually had a confused look on their face as they drove past.

In the Landau, still amazed at how many want to have a chat.....takes 1/2 hour sometimes to leave a petrol station. Dont mind it at all and always keen for a chat. Even get a few thumbs up in the P5 and thats not much to look at! Nice to be noticed, except on Saturday nights, only did it once and had to drive home. Couldnt stand it.......so many want to drag at every second they can.

Yeah but the N12 is a 700kg beer can whereas the N13 is around a tonne.

The E15 engines were known for their crap heads, and blow headgaskets like an E-series. More than likely the E15ETs owners get headwork done to them when headgaskets are being replaced.

There unreliable, but they can be quick... Just stockpile on gearboxes.

The animal I saw did not sound like a regular E15. More likely a CA18 transplant.

when on long trips on the highways/freeways, we usually have bets on who will wave back,

$5 say i can get one person in the car to wave back, I get $5 if they wave and i lose $5 if they don't.... so PLEASE WAVE.

Anyone who owns a pillarless car - like my Javelins, or Phoenix - must drive with all the windows down, only unless it is raining HEAVILY. The same thing goes for convertibles with the roof and ALL the windows down (don't get me started about fools who drive convertibles with the roof down and the side windows up!!!)

Consequentially, you can typically hear people telling you "nice car mate" or whatnot ..

Usually the rest of the conversation (either sitting at traffic lights, at servos, in carparks, etc) goes like this:
Interested_Onlooker: "What is it?"
Me: "AMC Javelin"
Interested_Onlooker: "Who makes them?"
Me: "American Motors .. they used to make Jeeps before Chrysler bought them out:
Interested_Onlooker: "Oh ..."
Interested_Onlooker: "What's it got in it?"
Me: "343V8"
Interested_Onlooker: "Who makes that?"
Me: "American Motors"
Interested_Onlooker: "Oh ..."
.. and usually they just get more confused.

An often alternative conversation (from older folks) usually goes like this:
Interested_Onlooker: "What is it?"
Me: "AMC Javelin"
Interested_Onlooker: "Oh .. like a Jowett Javelin"
Me: "No .. nothing like a Jowett"

Another derrivative goes like this:
Interested_Onlooker: "Hey! Nice Mustang!!!"
Me: "Yep .. one of them Mustang Javelins"

Yep I give the thumbs up to other drivers.

And I've given the thumbs down to ricers and Skaifeys in sh*tboxes plenty of times.

I've had some feedback too. Once a 10yo came up to me after I started the car in an underground carpark and gave it a rev for a mate to hear --> "oMg iS tHaT tHiNg On NOS?!?111" err, no, but I could see he meant well

We encourage the children in our family to observe the good things, such as, love God, cherish your parents, respect all people(even if they like Holdens), like Fords, must not like Holdens, etc etc.

So, one day my 12 year old nephew gave the thumbs up to the driver of an XYGT beside him on the traffic lights, the generous GT owner smiled and launched the screaming Clevo hard when the lights turned green.

It helped my nephew understand why GTs are the best.

Nothing wrong with thumbs up, everybody likes to see their toy being appreciated. It is also nice when you receive the compliment. I get it a lot at jobs, usually from apprentices from other trades when they drop on in the job.
