Default VFACTS - July 2024

Ford Ranger pipped by RAV4 in July.

Australian new-car sales in July 2024: Hybrid sales boom as Toyota RAV4 leads the VFACTS race

Toyota's RAV4 medium SUV was the most popular vehicle last month, with the market back up for a record July.

New car sales last month represent a new July record, with the Australian market appearing to bounce back from a dip the month before.

Last month 99,486 vehicles were delivered locally, 2.7 per cent more than in July 2023 – which was itself previously the highest July record, according to VFACTS data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

Although, this is the first time Tesla has not reported its numbers to the FCAI since it started doing so at the beginning of 2023. So with its numbers included, along with those of fellow electric car maker Polestar – which has also stopped reporting to the FCAI, the true total is 102,181.

Deliveries had declined for the first time in June 2024 following 14 months of consecutive growth, the longest streak in 20 years.

But much to the relief of the new car market, year-to-date numbers for 2024 as of the end of July are looking healthy, with 731,898 cars sold compared to 678,618 by this time last year – up 7.9 per cent.

In another shake-up, the Toyota RAV4 medium SUV has pipped the Ford Ranger as the top-selling new vehicle with 5933 sales compared to the ute’s 4915 – the fifth time the SUV has done so in its history.

The FCAI’s Chief Executive, Tony Weber, attributed the RAV4’s success to a shift in popularity towards hybrids and away from fully-electric vehicles in recent months.

“The hybrid performance is highlighted by the fact that the Toyota RAV4 was the top-selling vehicle for the month ahead of Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. Most RAV4 sales are hybrids,” Mr Weber said.

“While the first seven months of 2024 have exceeded expectations, the industry remains cautious about the future pending the implementation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard coupled with the economic conditions.”

Following behind the RAV4 and Ranger, the Toyota HiLux took third place in July, posting 4747 sales – though it was hardly a bad month for the brand which also had its Corolla take fourth place (2688), and Kluger end up in tenth (1705).

Ford also scored success with its Everest large SUV ending up in sixth (2162) and up 68 per cent, while the Isuzu D-Max finished slightly ahead in fifth (2369) – making three of the Top 5 vehicles utes.

Rounding out the Top 10 were the Mitsubishi Outlander (2110), Mazda CX-5 (2031) and MG ZS (1815).

Toyota remained the most popular new-vehicle brand last month, with 22,705 deliveries – putting it up by 18 per cent compared to July 2023, and up 29 per cent year-to-date.

It was followed by Mazda, which returned to its normal second place spot (8476 sales, up two per cent), and then Ford back in third (7749 sales, up nine per cent).

Kia finished slightly ahead of its Hyundai twin (fourth and fifth), recording 6620 deliveries and up eight per cent against Hyundai’s 6021, down eight per cent.

Nissan was knocked out of 10th by just 18 cars – its spot taken by Chinese car maker GWM, while MG returned to the Top 10 in July after dropping out in June to take 7th place.

Mitsubishi posted a 38 per cent increase to get 6th place, while Isuzu and Subaru took eighth and ninth respectively.

Electric vehicles accounted for 6.6 per cent of new vehicles reported as sold last month (taking into account Tesla and Polestar), down from seven per cent during the same month last year.

However, battery-electric vehicle sales have taken a hit in recent months, and July’s figures showed that trend to be continuing, with an 41 per cent drop compared to July 2023 (4048 v 6846). Year-to-date though, numbers are still increasing, with data showing they are 8.7 per cent up (54,267 v 49,938).

In contrast, hybrid sales are booming – up 88 per cent compared with July 2023 and 108 per cent year-to-date. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales have also seen a huge increase, with 2209 shifted in July compared to just 965 in the same month last year – up 129 per cent for the month and 129 per cent for the year too.

WTF is going on with hybrids suddenly? Are they giving away free vouchers to the local brothel with each one sold?

They are good. Got enough power and use no fuel.

I took my mums rav 4 on a 1000km round trip. Used 3.9lph. If I took my territory it would have done 12lph. And I recon the rav would be very close on the overtake.

I think hybrids are having a mini resurgence. Looks like people are starting to realise EV's aren't as cheap as marketed and plug in hybrids solve a lot of the range anxiety phobia and refuelling wait times if you can't charge at home.

With what happened on the markets today with the pacific peso (AUD) taking a shit, I don't think we'll be buying anything with our shitcoin at this rate, a lovely $100B hit to the ASX - ouchies if you're on the cusp of retiring with the hit you're going to cop on your super.

Oh well, maybe we'll attract foreign investment and become a manufacturing powerhouse again if our peso falls further

The RAV4 hybrid is a good car. Drives surprisingly well. It goes easy on the fuel around town. Hybrid payback time is around 3 years. Plus, Toyota have unblocked their supply chain quite a bit. Down to four month wait for the average mum and dad who walks into a Toyota dealer for a RAV4.

Ford Everest is what, typically 12 -15 months for certain models?

Another good month for Ranger plus Everest with close to 7,000 combined sales.

I wonder how long RAV4 hybrid buyers were waiting for their vehicles,
looks like almost a full boat load sold last month. Good for Toyota and
maybe other brands will catch on that a decent petrol hybrid is now
probably a better bet in light duty passenger SUVs and cars.

Also something to note, BYD will be supplying Toyota their engine and battery technology for Toyota's updated Hybrid tech.

The BYD tech is already here in the Sealion 6.

Wasnt that long ago that people were hanging shit on Toyota for holding off the switch to full EV vehicles in its range in favour of hybrid.
I guess Toyota know something about what the market wants and needs after all.

So RAV4 and Corolla in the top 4 on the back of Hybrids.
Are you telling me with all the resources of Ford they can't make a better Hybrid, Escape and Focus in every aspect. Power, Interior, Looks, Style, ect ect. in a Hybrid.

2025 Maverick updated. No Export or RHD. WTF.
How come F150 doesn't cannibalise sales of Ranger but Maverick would?

Where the hell is the updated Mustang in RHD, is it even coming.

Looks like their next priority is to make a Hypercar to compete at La Mans......what are they doing.

Keeping an eye in the mustang section of these forums, cars have just started to arrive, so it shouldn't be long before we start to see recorded mustang sales increase.

yer I LOL at some takes here re the big bad Toy crowd.
They are just a very good commodity seller and smart, posters here don't like that and look to jump on any thing to bring them down but they will always come back up they have proven so for decades.....sure they have their flaws but what global company doesn't.
Not my cup of tea ride wise even though I still own a ol 2010 4x4 Hilux that serves its use perfectly from time to time but the general consumer keeps buying no matter they get behind ie Hilux compared to Ranger, Corolla to all other competitors and RAV4 proves once stocks arrive they are out the door.
Staggered by their overall numbers - 22k is the bottom 4 combined and a little into Mitsu's numbers.
Those poor 4101 MG buyers, good luck flip them short term I say haha.
Had a business associate turn up with one from the airport the other day, going to lunch I sat in the back, you could hear rattles, feel the bumps and sounded "tinny".
Obviously price prevails.

Im currentlu driving a 57 seat Kinglong coach which is Chinese until my new Volvo Marco Polo arrives in January.
The Kinglong will do everything that the Volvo can, just nowhere near as well.
Its slow, bumpy, noisy, pneumatics are slow, the climate air varies 5* either side of the set temp so 1 minute its freezing, the next youre cooked.

About 80k cheaper to buy and whilst it looks great and has fancy changeable mood LED lighting throughout, the build quality is obvious

And you can argue they're making more money now than in any other point in their time in Australia.

If sales suddenly tank they'll have no qualms in leaving. Not supplying Australia would hardly make a dent in their business I'd imagine.

You could indeed argue that, however why has their global CEO suddenly started becoming worried about lack of diversity in their product range? IE - 'small cars'?

If they weren't worried about leaving Australia/NZ, then why did they kick up a huge stink and try lobby our federal government about concessions to the NVES?

Well at the moment it's quite lucrative and govt policy is going to impact that.

That's why I said 'if' sales tanked, then they would likely feel differently.

For the time being they are trying to protect their golden goose, and in the US they are trying to limit the amount they will need to spend on credits with the likes of Tesla.

It's the only reason they made the comment about small cars. They don't actually care what size car people drive. It's about limiting the damage that govt policy will cause. They'd rather people drive the most expensive models.

Farley’s comments about small vehicles was all about BEVs and profitability.

Ford has found that its bigger ICE vehicles make more profits than smaller vehicles
but when it comes to BEVs, the reverse is true, Ford thinks it will make more profit
by producing small vehicles with smaller batteries than larger vehicles with giant batteries.
Well that’s the plan now……..who knows if it stays true in the future.

Lobbying for concessions is cheaper than closing up shop years early,
there still a heap of profitable years left in Ranger and Everest.

The way Ford now reports quarterly earnings as Ford Blue, Ford Pro and Model E prevents
outsiders knowing how various regions around the world perform so no data on profit this region makes……..
I’m betting that our region is vey profitable with a ton of higher series Rangers and Everests.

Sorry, ran out of time with the above, with regards Ford regional profits,
I’m hoping there’s a way someone can steer us in the right direction
Re Ford Australia profits, they gotta be making good profits these day and
it would be nuts to let a few misguided government advisers destroy those profits.

all the hybrids are petrol.
Ford is no longer developing any Euro5 petrol cars.
our fuel isn't good enough for Euro6 petrol cars.
we don't get nice toys

This can literally be fixed by a stroke of a pen with the update of Australian Standards for fuel.

Which IIRC is due for review in 2027 or something.

Quote:
Improvements to fuel quality from December 2025

The Australian Government is making two changes to fuel quality from 15 December 2025.

The first change will reduce the level of aromatic hydrocarbons (aromatics) to a maximum of 35% in 95 Research Octane Number (RON) petrol. Aromatics are a natural component of crude oil that aids engine performance, but at high levels can cause operability issues.

All vehicles will be able to use the new 95 RON petrol. The existing 91 and 98 RON petrol grades and diesel will be unaffected.

The second change will align the previously announced reduction of sulfur allowed in all petrol grades (91 RON, 95 RON and 98 RON) with the start date of the new aromatics limit. This will simplify the transition for fuel suppliers and consumers.

The changes will also allow Australia to adopt Euro 6d noxious emissions standards, which will apply to:

new light vehicle models introduced to the Australian market from December 2025
new vehicles from existing lines in 2028.

The improvements will:

increase access to cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles in Australia
strengthen our fuel security
lower noxious emissions for light vehicles, saving $6.1 billion in health and fuel costs by 2040
remove almost 18 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector by 2050.

The changes follow extensive consultations with industry, consumer groups and the community by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

For more information on Euro 6d standards, visit Vehicle safety & the environment.

You can read more about these changes at: Improving Australia's fuel and vehicle emissions standards.
https://www.dcceew.gov.au/climate-ch...g-fuel-quality

Looks like they've brought the date back to December next year.

Means we're going to see shit like PPF's though, which to be honest I don't want in my life, much like DPFs.

Toyota said they'd stop selling ICE without Hybrid in the passenger segment (yaris, corolla, camry, RAV4, anything up to Kluger inclusive). So the numbers increase to hybrids aren't people going out to buy hybrids, its just that they are buying Toyota's that are all hybrids now .i.e. It is not a change in buying behaviour.

You literally can't buy a non hybrid passenger Toyota.

Ford have all their eggs in the one basket.
They were The Falcon Company. They're now almost 100% dependent on the Ranger-Everest Platform.
One bad build year could see the entire thing come tumbling down
Toyota have strong performers in almost very segment. The RAV-4 sells like hotcakes.

The Ford Escape has essentially died without a whimper in Australia despite being a very decent car that unlike many of the mid-sized SUVs, is an enjoyable drive. Also one of few cars in its segment that has a torque-converter in it, as opposed to a bloody CVT. Of course, nobody knows that because Ford's marketing department have still not improved one bit over the past 15 years.

I think the Everest is a decent car, but too big for me. I have no need for a Ranger. Too impractical anyway.

Ford has neglected too many market segments. The mid-range SUV is fertile ground, but you aren't going to pull people away from a Rav-4 or CX-5 if you don't give them an active reason to do so. The driving dynamics, the drivetrain, the styling etc. should all have been hammered home.
The RAV-4 styling is fine (IMO), but the drivetrain is inferior, and the handling is reportedly quite mundane. Despite that, people run towards them like Homer and the ice-cream truck.

I wish Ford supported their models more. The Focus also deserved better. The final models had fixed the DSG issues and replaced with a traditional box, but I guarantee that 99% of people wouldn't know.

For Ford's sake, I just hope the Ranger and Everest are always decent relative to their opposition, or they're going to be caught with their pants down again, or completely ripped off as in the case of Holden.

4L/100km without charging worry, does the SUV thing with 2 box practicality, good ownership proposition with Toyota resale, I can see why they sell like hotcakes. Only quibbles might be CVT and not a real AWD, but most don't care about that. RAV4 is understandable in the sales as they finally get the supply. Those blue pin striped seats on the XSE are phwoar! like Japanese 90s trim fetishists dream.

We're never getting the Territory handling balance at that price point again so the head could well say RAV4 while the heart might want Suby AWD.

Edit: here's a snow battle comparison - if only we got the Wilderness pack!
