Default What is this oil leak?

Hi all...

I have oil leaking from this star shaped assembly. Picture below.

It is the passenger side of the gearbox.

I would like to change this gasket as it is leaking quite bad. I'm just wondering if I can simple unbolt it and change the gasket. I wouldn't want to unbolt it and have springs and allsorts fly out.

Anyone changed one before or know what this assembly is?

Cheers.

Is it an auto? looks simple enough drain either a sump bolt, if not undo half the lower bolts and let it drop and drain, undo what ever it is-refit new gasket?

It's the rear servo cover. The retaining bolts are meant to have loctite 567 sealant applied to stop leaks out through the threads so perhaps that lower bolt needs removing and the sealant applied. After 1st drain the trans and removing the filter, you can remove the cover and put in new "O" rings and a new gasket in but pay attention to:

a) applying that sealant to all bolt threads;
b) applying Vaseline to the gasket and "o" rings to hold them in place while assembling and so the "o" rings stay pliable longer;
lubricate "O" rings with ATF after applying the Vaseline.
c) make sure the spring is correctly placed over the spigot and servo rod;
d) ensure the and struts are correctly placed; and
e) checking/readjusting the bands after you finish replacing the rear servo cover.

it's not hard just be careful about keeping it all hygenically clean and reassembling it with everything in the right position.

Thanks for your helpful reply.

What spring are you talking about? ( I presume I will know where it came from when I take the cover off ).

Also what do you mean by '' ensure the struts are correctly placed''?

Thanks for your time.

Sorry lost the b it should be "band struts". There's an apply and a reaction strut that is clipped into the bands - if you are careful and don't knock anything it won't move and you should be Ok. The spring is a big spring that sits in the centre of the servo - there should no trouble knowing where it goes but be careful it doesn't move out of place during the course of assembling it.

Unfortunately I can't find a good picture of similarly mounted band struts to show you what I mean. But if you loosen all the cover bolts progressively when you remove it and don't knock or unnecessarily fiddle with anything it should be OK.

This may help http://www.ellery.com.au/pdf/Update%20EP.TRANF.pdf The struts concerned are above and parallel to the verniers in the rear band adjustment pic. and as you can see if you pulled the spigot or servo rod out the strut would unclip.

Make sure you get new "o" rings too they will likley have been compressed and flattened from use and if reused won't seal.

Big thanks to aussieblue - I spent over 30 minutes looking for something to help, and couldn't find a thing (i know, i know: google...but you have to put the right criteria in to get anything worthwhile!). I have a leak from the same area, so will get to this one day!
