Default Mini Spool Vs LSD

Hey guys,

As some of you may or may not know i currently race an AU off Road. It still is an open Spinner Diff, and was looking into either fitting a mini Spool, or LSD.

Im leaning towards a mini spool, as it seems to be a hell of a lot cheaper, for the same result, but saw a friend who had a mini spool in on a 25 spline commodore diff, snap a couple of axles.

Would a 28 spline be stronger? I dont want to be constantly swapping over axles.

Thanks

If it's used only off road, a mini spool would be my choice.

Mini spools break stuff on the road because there's no give around corners. Big sticky tyres will snap axles.

They're also pretty dangerous in the wet.
I wouldn't use a mini spool on the road, so if the car is dual purpose, then an LSD is your only choice IMO.

I agree. Mini spool for off road and LSD for on road.

You may need to adjust your wheel alignment settings too after you install a mini spool.

On road mini spools accelerate trailing arm bush wear, Can twist axles then sheer them off, defectable, can be dangerous in the wet and in car parks people look at you funny as you turn in.

Yeah we have one event a year that is tarmac...

Time to look for a cheap LSD... Im guessing EF/EL LSD wont fit into an AU? just seem alot more common than the AU ones.

Is $500 a good price?

Are you looking for an LSD centre or entire diff?

As long as the diff is live rear and not IRS, its possible to fit one from an EL into an AU. But don't quote me on that.

Interesting... Will have to do some research on that... Am i right, to tell the difference, when you bounce the car, IRS will not move with the car, but live axle will?

Ah, I generally can tell the difference by looking underneath the car. The IRS diff has suspension joints in the diff that move independently to the diff centre. The live rear is one solid unit and only moves when the springs and shocks let it.

Live rear axle

IRS rear axle

I still dont know about the centers being interchangeable.

EF/EL Diff will fit, but you will have the offset change, so running pre-au offset rims will be needed...

Is there a difference with offset for the rear? I thought the offset was nil on EL to AU diffs. Only the front had the different offset?

Nope, rears had a different offset, which is why many people with E-Series who are running a Cebco/RBS front twin piston brake upgrade kit, generally tend to upgrade to an AU diff to give them AU onwards offset all around...

if that was the case all AUs would need different rims front and rear the and you mught find scrutineering problems with the wrong offset. if you are going in a straight line a mini spool is ok if you are turning corners they are bad for the car, the road and can be dangerous as they can make your handling unpredictable when the rear tyres skip during turns
