Talking fitness and endurance, which sport would you consider more demanding on the sportsman?
Compare the AFL grand final verses a endurance (Bathurst) I tell you why I ask. At work I sit between two massive AFL fans who tell me motor racing is easy as you just sit there and the car does all the work, where as in AFL the player is always on the feet running. For the sake of the arguement, other 'codes' can be used where AFL isn't the local ball sport.

Did you see rick kellys heartbeat yesterday? 190bpm for most of the race.
Craig lowndes did pretty well in the "worlds greatest athlete" show as well. Theres no denying these drivers are athletes. |

2 different types of sports but both very demanding, V8's you need pretty strong (braking gear changes) and to be ultra fit to be good, with the bpm I personally think in a V8 supercar in the heat of it all you wouldn't notice 190bpm until you come out of the car... Not saying its a walk in the park but im not sure it would tired you out to the point of being sick.
AFL you need strength, power and fitness. even thou players run between 10 - 15km a game they also break tackles, take marks kicks so on so on. Both a very hard, but i think AFL is the harder to train for... I might just say AFL just but V8 supercar drivers are still very very athletic |

There's no doubt both AFL players and race drivers are both athletes, but I gotta say they, IMO anyway that football takes a bigger toll on your body than the V8's. Most AFL players retire in their early 30's as their bodies are more prone to injuries.

AFL would be far more physically taxing, motorsport would be more mentally taxing....

too hard to compare, both train differently to enhance different characteristics of their body. Both are pretty fit these days, though i'd say F1 drivers are up there with one of the fittest.

its clear that AFL doesn't tire out the players. They've always got enough energy to do drugs, brawl and glass the missus.

Im gunna say equally demanding, Rugby/AFL you're more open to injury because it's contact sport. |

Kind of like saying that you do burnouts in residential streets, speed everywhere and kill fluffy animals because you own a V8...... Whilst drivers need to be fit, real fit and it is extremely physically demanding AFL/NRL etc (except soccer, that's easy as lol) is the harder I'd have to say. Especially more so if you are a reader of the play.

no contest imo, motor raceing is tuff, i remember doing 15 minutes in a race kart, i was fit back then but i was stuffed afterwards, there is no resting while someone takes a free kick or a shot at goal during raceing, although it would be a little easier now in modern racecars with power steering and multiple drivers, i can`t imagine how hard it would have been in the xy days throwing the big bugger around.

4Vman nabbed it. Injuries are rare in V8SC though the mental game is on for hours at a time. The only respite is on the straights but even then your heart is pounding at 180bpm, you're choking in the heat, your head is buzzing with maths, "who's where", "what's that noise", "yep, time to adjust this or that", "will I have brakes", "how many laps do I have left", "damn I fluffed that corner", "I'll do X next lap" etc etc etc, and that's in the 10 seconds you have to relax!
The level of fitness required in V8SC is very high, even the sprint races they do are relative marathons compared to all other categories in this country. If you haven't already, head down to your local track and look at the state of blokes coming out of an 8 lap race, then marvel at how a V8SC driver looks after getting out of a double stint at Bathurst. In my opinion, footy is harder on the body but motorsport is more exhausting. |

I think the key here is to consider what is the most demanding. I would hazzard a guess at elite level any sport is equally demanding. The mental and physical preparation is is tailored to suit the particular code. For instance a supremely fit race driver might not even make the finish line doing a paralympic event in a wheelchair. A ninety yearold may find walking to the letter box overwhelmingly demanding.
Key fitness indicators for one sport may not translate into another. |

Drivers require far more concentration.
They're in a hot environment in a piece of machinery flying at fast speeds, and they need to concentrate for a bloody long time. While you don't get the body-on-body contact in motor racing (no ********, Sherlock!), you need to be on the ball physically and mentally all the time, and fast to react. In AFL, you can have periods on the bench where your only job is to recover, and even on the Richmond forward line where you don't need to do a thing, mainly because the opportunities don't come. Those AFL 'fans' are fools. Racing is hard in its own way. I would like to see them succeed.

While motor racing is physically hard, no doubting that, and your afl mates probably know that too, they're probably just giving you a wind up!
But you have to be way fitter in afl just look at a guy like Russell ingall, he's what? About 45 odd, and whilst no doubt fit, a guy of his fitness could never be competative in a game of AFL |

Concentration levels are poles apart ...... make a mistake once on the track and your cactus ...... make a mistake on the field and either kick a point or get to have a rest on the bench. To be alert 100% for an entire Bathurst, not many could do it let alone a footballer. I struggle for 10 minutes!

It's really put into perspective when drivers come staggering out of a car due to exhaustion at the end of a race (on the rare occasion). If these guys have the fitness of AFL/Rugby players and they are STILL coming out of the car exhausted to the point of passing out, it gives an insight into how difficult the sport really is. Credit where it's due.

I went for a ride in a V8SC at the end of 07, I was reasonably fit back then and I was even stuffed after 3 laps being a passenger. The forces on the body constantly is what hurts you. I have huge respect for these guys who do it for 2 hours let alone the 6.5 hours bathurst races. No doubt AFL is hard on the body, but when you look stuffed the coach puts you on the bench, when your stuffed after ten laps your engineer is telling you to suck it up and keep going. IMO being a race car driver would be harder.

No afl player has to put up with 60 degree heat + fumes. If you see how exhausted the guys were at the end of Adelaide race you'd know the car drivers have it alot worse. The only rest driver's get is along the straights. afl guys can just stand around for a bit till they catch their breath.

Just look at the '89 VFL Grand Final and then ask yourself which sport is more demanding.

AFL is the most demanding of the footballs and Rugby League is the least. Motor racing doesen't quite have the same aerobic endurance but then those rankings are in pure physical terms. The adrenaline high would have a bigger affect than physical exertion.
