Default gearbox won't engage.

Replaced the motor in a telstar tx5 89 model. everything is back in seems to be together right but the gearbox will move to neutral and reverse. no other gears will work and the shifter will only move forwards and back. any ideas what is going on and how i can repair?

bit hard to get wrong the shifter is a rod direct to the box
if the box was ok before
I would remove the shifter again and make sure the lug is in place and you can select all the gears without the shifter in or go to the box and try getting the gears from the box where the control rod fits

recheck clutch is working and cable adjustment is correct

clutch is engaging and disengaging fine. Without shift linkage connected, the arm moves in and out by about 1.5cms but will not move clockwise or anticlockwise from it's current position. I'm guessing something got stuffed up inside the box but i just can't see how. afaik it wasn't dropped or bashed around while the box was out. I really can't understand why it would not work now. was fine before.

The clutch buttons are not lining up with the gearbox therefore you are locked out of most gears...

All I could think of.

I am guessing here you should have three movements on the change rod at the box
so push in all the way to select a position
find each position hopefully you may get a clockwise or anti clock wise movement

well i've been playing around and by forcing the gear lever around. can now get 2nd 4th and reverse. all gears where you push the stick forward won't work. do you think tapping the linkage at the box would cause damage? not just laying into it, just light taps.

you are making progress you can select 2 and 4 neutral and reverse

do you want to start the car and drive it see if the box settles ?

your missing 1, 3,5 is this gear change sequence correct ?
for 1 = from neutral you need to push away from you and forward
for 3 = from neutral you need to pull towards you and forward
is 5 over to you and back dont know where reverse is

Does the selector shaft need to come outwards at the box for the forward shift to occur - middle for neutral - right in for 2 and 4
dont know where for reverse and 5 th

Yep. all missing gears need the selector to pull out of the box. Thats what they all have in common.

cant explain this ---as you said everything was working and the box wasnt pulled apart or damaged during removal or installation

keep trying to get the selector to move out

only last suggestion :baby bott
do you want to take the box out and strip it down to find the problem ?

if i am going to have to take the box out, i'm not going to even think about taking it appart i have neither the tools nor the workspace to do it without destroying something or loosing stuff. i'll just go and get one from a wreckers. might try a mechanic or a gearbox re conditioner to see if they have any bright ideas before i go any further.

okay problem solved. A person who will remain anon. put the neutral switch in without it's spacing washer, thereby jaming movements of the selector rod...
GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!
