I went to the Telstra shop today, i am looking to upgrade my mobile, i'm after a tradesman (robust) model, the 2 year old Nokia i have has not changed and is not Blue tooth, anyone know of a blue tooth tradesman model ?
I am thinking of buying it outright and going on a capped plan, they seem much better value than the business plans, i was considering importing something from the States, Are the U.S market phones able to use our sim cards etc.. ? |

what benefits do you think having bluetooth will get you, also I dont think most of the USA phones will work in Australia, as they run a totally different network to ours. Bluetooth is good for data transfer between phones and other devices and a cordless headset thats about it.

I have my eye on a bluetooth handsfree box, it clips to the sun visor and allows one touch handsfree calls, i hate wired hands free cables.

Your looking for a phone with a decent battery life I gather, I wouldn't worry about blue tooth car kits, go for a fixed car kit that enables the phone to recharge.

Most of the newer phones actually have a speaker function now. which is just about as good as having a bluetooth headset, I have both and use the speaker function in the car much more than the headset. I also know if you ring telsta at the moment you can get a NEW 3G video phone (motorola V3X) for nothing if you agree to the 79 bucks month cap...which gets your about 450 worth of calls. (I just picked up two) and its a great phone. And the video calling is quite clear and good quality, also the phone has a 2 mega pixal camera and Video Camera. Bluetooth and USB Connections plus at the moment you get 2 months free Bigpond Mobile access and 100 bucks worth of free content (ringtones and premium services).

I have found it to be quite robust and am quite happy with it.(I am also a tradie) only thing you need to remember with the bluetooth is to set it to invisable as there is a virus getting around wich reduces the battery life to approx. 4 hours.

You can bring any phone in from the US as long as it is a triband phone. You will see a lot of phones these days are triband, which meen that they run the australian, american and european networks.

The problem with dealing overseas is waranty. I would recommend you get a second hand 6310i .It has bluetooth and is fairly tough. You could probably buy a few for a cheap price if you look hard enough. Most new phones are not blokey tough phones like the old bricks.

as for bluetooth viris,,,, they only affect symbian o/s phones. as long as you don't accept bluetooth connections when they are offered up, nothing can happen to your phone anyway. mine is not set to invisible, but my phone's name is more than likely to have other people worried enough not to connect to me... |

I'm happy with my Nokia 6280, but I don't know if it would be robust enough for a tradie. For that matter, most of the 3G phones have big screens that would probably be a bit fragile. |

You would think one manufacturer would make a trade/sports phone with blue tooth, it sounds like an untapped market to me.

I have had mine for about 2 weeks now and I havent had an issue, but I do charge my phone everynight, I have spent several hours surfing bigpond on it, playing the dowloaded games, and using the connection to the laptop extensively, for those in an office environement it actually does come with two chargers so you would have one for the office and one home, I use my a fair bit and have only run down to the LOW BATTERY screen once. So far i couldnt fault the phone and or the services. The one thing that I find pretty impressive is that when I charge the phone its appears to be fully charged again within about 45 minutes, and actually shuts off the charging once the phone is fully charged.

i have the same phone and it was at the bottom of a pool and it still works... 99% of the time as of recent though with phones you can just get rubber cases from ebay or phone shop...replaces the plastic with rubber, and also somewhere you can get a plastic cover (bit like heat shrink stuff) and nothing gets under it... what Laminge said just get the car kit thing in your car so it can charge and also when you got a call it comes through your speakers....sooo as a tradie your ute would be playing the radio right...then plug phone in, put it in automatic answer, turn volume up never have to get off the roof again...hehe dont no about you talking back though

I use the Motorola V3X, and the Motorola HF850 car kit. The phone lasts me about 3 days without charging. And that's on 24/7, no issues with it. The car kit is utilising the factory sound system, so no extension speaker needs fitting in the BA. I have a mic near the visor, and the control mounted on the ICC.
HF850 cost me $105 on ebay, and $100 for a pro fit. |

i only said what i know so i dunno... theres a few geeks at JCU that play with bluetooth/wireless networks, etc and yes anything is possible... NO theres no actual wide spread 'virus' as such but some areas might have some bored people who'll try anything only tip when using wireless and bluetooth etc.. TURN IT OFF when not it use or use the WEP protection and use alphanumeric passwords, never accept anything you dont no...ok

I have decided to go on the Telstra $79.00 capped plan which includes the motorola V3X, then i will buy a bluetooth in car kit, i spoke to a sales rep last night, they refuse to throw anything in with the deal, all i wanted was a car charger and a bluetooth headset, i know optus will do this on the same plan, has anyone had luck screwing some extra goodies out of Telstra ? i may try Crazy Johns, i heard they are a little more generous.
