Default Do people actually BUY these old cars?

I'm not going to single out individual sellers for ridicule, but anyone who spends 5 minutes looking at old car ads (on gumtree, ebay, etc, etc) has seen plenty.
I'm talking about prospective projects or restorations, which often seem extremely overpriced, relative to what is physically present.

I suspect there may be an inherent flaw in the "market"?
In so much as people can only see what others are asking. They can't see what people are offering, or what cars actually sell for.

Which leads me to my question. Are these cars actually selling? And if so, for how much?

I'd be interested to here from anyone that has actually bought an old car to restore. Without divulging your details, how did the price and condition of your car compare to the average of what's on offer?

I know what ya mean mate i've been looking for a long time now for a project. The crap some people try and sell, and the stories about why there falcon 500 6cld missing every part under the sun that they pulled from there granddads back paddock because they heard old falcons sell for a million dollars is more special than every other rusted out 6cld makes me laugh.

But there are nice stuff out there for decent prices you just have to be quick and have the cash ready to go

There's nothing wrong with somebody wanted to restore an XD-F, and there are some decent ones around cheap.
Personally, I'm looking at pre-70's, but that's just me.

The whole "economy" of old cars is really quite intriguing...

When a car that actually IS "suitable for restoration" becomes available, invariably it will get snapped up, or outbid, by one of the vultures. He proceeds to sell all the good parts, to people restoring their cars, then sells the shell as a "perfect project" to some poor smuck who then has to commence paying inflated prices to buy all the parts the previous guy stripped.

Then you've got the guy who may (or may not) have started with something decent, and thinks he has done some great service by stripping it to the bones and scattering the parts around his shed, and now wants me to take his word that "everything is there" But every specific question is met with "of course it has that, no I can't see it, must be here somewhere."
I don't blame somebody for abandoning a project, stuff happens. What I find fault with is their logic that the car is somehow now worth MORE, BECAUSE they have pulled all the parts off it.

And don't get me started on BOG. Any idiot can fill a hole with bog.

I mean it's pretty much unanimously agreed that RWD/AWD is greater than FWD. All I'm saying is that FWD cars can still be a bucketload of fun, and an Aurion is a perfect example of this. Heck, I had a heavy Lexus ES300 FWD Automatic as a first car, which is pretty much on paper the most boring useless car in the universe. I had a **** tonne of fun hooning around in that though.

Ahh yes, but whilst power over steer may point you in right, the only thing power under steer points you towards is is either the gutter or a power pole. Neither is exactly desirable. However oversteer into on coming traffic is probably worse. Traction on..

The best is when they have an old wreck that is basically destroyed and 90% rust and they are trying to sell it for thousands of dollars.

Reminds me of old mate we went to see the other day. Selling a HQ ute which looked like a fairly good one from pics and he only wanted $2750 for it. Says "very little rust" in the ad.

In the time that it took to get to this bloke's house, half the steel has magically transformed into iron-oxide. Runs like a sack of crap too. $2750 is alright for a decent one but not for the pile. Old mate says he's firm on price too.

Still, not as bad as the joker that wants $20k for his resto mod 4-door XB.

Having restored 4 cars and sold 2 of them completed, I've been noticed there's really only 2 types of buyers. People who want to spend 20,30,40k+ on a turnkey drive anywhere classic, or those that want to spend less than 5k and do the lot themselves. Personally I'd never never buy another half way done project though, you end up paying more but having to start over again anyway, and having to figure out what goes where and how. But they do sell, often at a very reduced price from what they're advertised at because the owner has realised they've bitten off way more than they are can chew, or is simply sick of working on it.

having said all of the above I admire the feller that picks up something like a couple of mudguards and a bit of bonnet from out of a paddock and 10 years later he exhibits a brand new "T" model Ford.

that takes guts and determination.....got my respect.
