Default XR6 Chewing Threw Fuel

What is the average amount of City Kilometres you should be able to achieve out of 1 Tank of 65 litre Compacity.

Do you do a sum of 65 litres X 4.0 litre engine and get the results?

Or do XR6's chew threw fuel like there is no tomorrow.

At the momment, I am trying to fix a problem with Fuel Economy, and average tank I am getting is 275-300 kilometres at tank.

Comments and help greatly appreciated, i want to appreciate my car, not make it a Fuel Stations Delight.

Is there any of these EFI experts please dont' hesitate in msg'ing me.

That consumption is worse than my 220 kw xr8 on pure stop start city cycle. Have you done any mods to the car?

my XR6 averages (city style traffic) about 450 klms per tank (my tank is apparently a 68Lt and I usually have about 1/4 tank left - I never let it get under that)

That works out to be 21L/100km. ouch! Either you have a very heavy right foot or you have a problem with the car. My BOSS gets 13.8-14.4 in suburban driving.

Officially its 12L/100 km city, 8L/100 km open roads.

Working it out is easy.

Off your figures its your fuel use of 65 litres divided by the distance you get, which is say 300 km.

That gives you 0.216 litres per kilometre. Multiply that by 100 and you're using 21L/100 km which is 9L more than the standard Ford figures.

Working backwards of the 12L/100 km mark it's your tank capacity 68L divided by the 12 L. which is 5.67. Multiply that by 100 to get your kilometres and its 567km. Well in an ideal world that would be the case.

my AU 2 XR6 gets about 400 from a full talk atm
im waiting to save up for an edit to see if theres some crazy rich mixtures running or something cause ford said they didnt have any problems or codes in their car..

I drove from sydney to gold coast on a full tank of fuel 857 km in a au 11 xr6
ute coming back from wagga afd, have to say very pleased.

Your MAP sensor is toast and its running on start up (cold start) maps. Like driving with the choke on full. Happened to my VCT too.

Now I get a glorious 380-400km a tank... but the car is revved HARD on a regular basis. I could probably get 450km if I gave a crap. :

When i bought my car i averaged 350-400kms and since ive done cold air and exhaust i get between 400-600kms behaving or being a ******** 300kms to the tank.

highway 8.5 per 100kms 0r between 12.3-14.5 per 100kms around town and thats with a 68 litre tank

My godddddddd,Im getting 700+ high way only driving in my SR wagon and Im going for more with extractors an any thing else i can get.
I pushed it abit to far today and ran out about 1klm from home freaking trip DTE is out a bit.
Out of my VCT xr6 ute (83ltrs) I got 680+ average, the best was 880ks back from tarree.

considering I dont ever get auto lock up till around 3000rpm and the car basically lives at 3000-5500rpm when ever I drive it (after it warms up of course), I dont think 380km a tank is that bad :
Remember, its not a daily driver, its lucky to do 100kms a week most of the time, so when I get to drive it... I have fun. Most of the time it just sits in the garage gathering dust.
Lately I've washed it more than I've actually had to put fuel in it (doesnt help being interstate for work nearly every week.)

when i picked my car up (AU2 Fairmont I6), it was pushin bout 17 litres to the hundred. so i reset the computer, and it reads about 14 litres per hundred but its really doing about 15, and i dont push it all the time... i dunno... where as my mums car, VCT, only does about 13.6 litres to the hundred, calculated... im gonna have to hit my dad up for some mod's :

Thats about what I get out of a VCT powered ghia. But I had a blocked A/filter & it was running up the 14.5L/100 km around town. I get about 420-450 kms out of a tank around town & 650-700kms on h/way at legal speed limits.

simplest way is put it on a dyno and watch the A/F ratio go to crap. It will read WAY too rich. Not just rich... MEGA rich.

Or you could drive with the MAP sensor unplugged and see if the car runs any differently. If it runs the same, chances are the MAP is stuffed. This is the same test I use for O2 sensor (unplug it and see how the car runs).

Well, it's not as easy as it sounds (nothing ever is, really). The MAP sensor is fitted to the intake manifold, basically under the Throttle Body (TB). You may need to remove piping and the TB to get to it - it depends on how big or small your hands are! Once you have access to the plug, just unplug it (the electrical connection), leaving the MAP sensor still connected to the manifold (otherwise it will suck in air).

I'm getting about 18L/100k around town from my EF 4.0 That's pretty bad though. I'd look at getting your car toa mechanic for a bit of a looksie.

I am not 100% sure, but if the car starts and runs (idles), then it is just using the base fuel maps etc, and will continue to do so while it's not getting a signla from ther MAP sensor. It will run rich, so it could potentially clog up the plugs, but if it's only for a 5 or 10 minutes drive (test) then it should be OK. I'm no mechanic though, so I guess it's try at your own peril.

I have disconnected the O2 sensor (from the exhaust) and the car runs very rich, but no lasting effects. In fact it ran no worse than when it was connected, which is how I knew the sensor was stuffed. Replaced the O2, and it was all good again. I'm presuming that the same logic would apply with the MAP sensor.

No side effects really.. Over a period of time it will clog the Cat but that takes months/years.

Very sorry to hijack your thread xr6badboy, but would a stuffed MAP sensor cause the car to have trouble starting, i.e coughing and spluttering for about 2-7 seconds before starting sometimes....

unlikely... the MAP does not have anything to do with cold starts, thats the base maps in the ECU. Never had any effect on mine during start up.

i have the same trouble with mine sometimes its does that wen i start it although mainly wen its hot idles rough and coughs abit

My ute does about 350-450 (with full time grampa driving, and 2 long trips a week).

Hope this helps, utes are heavier so it may not help that much.
