Default Today is halloween *caution rant involved*

hey all because today is the 31st of October i decided to have a rant

why is it that people are adpoting the notion of celebrating this so-called night/day of halloween?
i heard on the radio this morning how to choose the proper pumpkin to use for halloween! then heard more discussion on the topic this arvo

why i ask are people choosing to adopt this day to be celebrated???
i would like anyone parent on here who lets there children go out tonight to explain to me and probably others on here what halloween is all about!

when i grew up in the 90's we only saw it on tv in the simpsons and thought nothing more of it

is it because we are becoming more americanized? or is it just another chance for the slowly fattening up children of Australia to get there chubby little hands on some lollies( i refuse to call it candy) i ask u...

end rant

cheers
brendan

I'm with you. Anybody who knocks on my door this evening and says 'trick or treat' will get a rude surprise.

I don't think it's worth getting your panties in a bunch over.

Firstly, it's not an American celebration so it's not a case of us becoming Americanised.

I knew about it because my family is from Scotland, it's roots are largely the Celts during a fertile period of one of their Gods and originally celebrated predominantly in Ireland and Scotland.

Today, the reason behind the period is largely lost and has been taken over by kids dressing up in costume and going trick or treating around their neighbourhood... and to be honest, I can't really see anything wrong with that.

I have a good supply of broccoli and beans. They're healthy and taste good too. The fibre intake would ensure that should I run out of either, I can drop some brownies in their bag.

Halloween is great fun. The area that we live in comes alive at about 18:00. We always have a spit roast out the front of our house. We have about 22 guestst coming over tonight. We all intend to have heaps of fun. Halloween is huge in Alice due to the large number of American families living here. Loosen up guys, get into the spirit (pun intended) and have some fun. If I can i will post some pics here. Might be a quiet night though, looks like rain.

I saw a hot girl in her late teens in a mini skirt and black leather top walking down the street (it was a halloween outfit)

So I'd be happy to give treats if people like that came knocking on my door.

To celebrate 'All Hallows Eve' in this country is pointless, since it directly relates to a tradition based solely around a way of life which never existed in this country.

The same is true of the 'Thanksgiving' holiday in November.

Having said that, I see no reason why those who came from the USA, or any other region that celebrate these, shouldn't continue to observe it in whatever way they see fit.

It's a little like me observing 'Hanukkah', because there may be 2 or 3 Jewish families in my street.

It's not actually "rubbish", so that opinion is pure ignorant bogan. Despite how commercialised it may have become (a la Christmas - a fictitous event) it is a tradition which dates back centuries.....although the basis may have changed somewhat.

We embrace too many things American. Halloween, is there actually any point to it? What does it represent? I never understood the point. I guess its another one of those events designed purely for it's commercial value. Throw on some silly holliday, make it a tradition and get people into the shops buying lollies and treats for other people's children and paying for ridiculous costumes.

Yes, its an American tradition. And thats where it should stay.

I agree... if Halloween is happening in Australia, we should also have a public holiday every 4th of July.

A group of about 10 young girls just came to my place. They were nice and polite and seemed to be having a good time, i doubt they care where halloween started and i don't either really.
As long as they aren't running out in front of cars or knocking on strangers doors by themselves i don't see a problem with it.
Does it really matter? Let them be kids, in a few years they'll have to get jobs and pay tax.

I did however, also see some older boys walking around with a carton off eggs. If any eggs find their way onto my house or car i'm going to throw a sheet over my head and stalk the little bastards with my potato gun.

Well definatley not an Australian tradition, and that's all that really counts.

We had the trick or treat thing happening one year and had kids turn up. Said sorry kids, but I don't have any lollies, didn't know about it. So it seems they lived up to the treat or treat thing and damaged my property.

America, British, Italian or what ever or who ever tradition it is, who cares, its not ours!!!!!

If kids knock on my door, i state that i dont believe in it, we are in Australia, and to have a nice night. I wont let my kids do it, its not our tradition, never will be, its like Valentines, a commercial venture, i HATE it.

No, but Australias colonised history traces back to the UK and we also have a lot of imports (including both of my parents) from the region.

That would be like saying, we should ignore Christmas because they celebrate that in America.

Well I dont participate in it and will not allow my kids to either..... christmas and easter are bad enough.
I have one question though.... do the parents go with the kids or are they left to roam and wander and possibly receive unwanted attention from those who enjoy the younger of the species?

I just had a large number of Kids at my door. The only 'lollies' I have in my house is a bar of Old Gold, and no-one is getting that but me!

"Trick or Treat" - I was so threatened to answer the door naked, and tell them to shove their American tradition. I would have, but I don't want to be thrown in prison for indecent exposure. Shame that...

In all seriousness, we aren't in America. I live in Australia, however with the Americanisation that we are undergoing at the moment, we are becoming the 51st state of America. Halloween.
