Default Canberra in May... anything interesting?

this forum gets many more views than the regional forum.

I snaged a cheap bus ticket to Canberra for a day trip from Sydney...

Anything neat to see or do while there for a few hours?

thanks,
--Russ

Hey Russ

We got an email earlier from FASTXR about an event planned for the club.

Observation Rally - Saturday May 16

These are fun events that the whole family can get involved in. Basically, competitors follow a set course, collecting the answers to questions along the way. There are a number of prizes up for grabs on the day, and there will be a BBQ lunch at the end. Total distance is less than 100km (there's a bit of country driving this time) and the aim is to have most people finished within a couple of hours. If you're interested, please add your name to the list, including total number of passengers for catering purposes:

War Memorial
Parliament
Telstra Tower
National Art Gallery

Buy gentlemans literature and fireworks

Some locals might have better ideas, but i think fireworks and gentlmans literature is a winner.

War Memorial requires a minimum of two days and is a must see!

While the basic Ford Six was code named Barra, the Turbo version clearly deserved its very own moniker – again enter Gordon Barfield.
We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about.
“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

War memorial.

I could spend weeks and weeks there. Some of the artefacts and displays they have are truly amazing.

Agreed with a few posts here, you can't go down and see the War memorial and come back the same day, there's so much there you'd have to make a weekend of it.

Totally agree. I love the place. Was there last week in fact. Spent four hours alone there, just taking it all in.

Awesome!

I love the Bell UH1 display they have, as well as the bridge from the HMAS Brisbane.

OH and probably my favourite thing there would be the Spitfire - still with it's original WW2 paint.

Not to mention one of the three Japanese migdet subs that snuck into Sydney Harbour in 1942, complete with torpedo damage.

Incredible stuff.

Hmmm I wouldn't be going to Canberra then.....

Whoever takes him on a tour should take him to visit the natives out the front of old Parliament House.
