Car prices in Australia suck.

Was just looking at car prices new in the US and decided that car prices here suck.

Its called tax.

In 2003, a mate of my old man's bought a brand new Audi A4 3.0 V6 Multitronic. The dealer who sold it to him had also sold a then brand new Audi RS6 (4.2 V8 Twin Turbo, 331kW 560Nm, AWD) to the Italian ambassador to Australia. Now the RS6 had an on-the-road price of $235,000. The ambassador, being tax exempt, got it for $115,000. That's $120,000 of tax. Or 104.34%.

We are the heaviest taxed nation in the world on cars.

We might be bad with luxury cars, but we arent too bad with regular fodder and thats what counts. Looks like i found an excuse to use the figures from an old university assignment. These figures are for a base model 4 cylinder Camry- First coloum is average weekly earning, second coloum purchase price and third price amount of weeks it takes for an average worker to afford the car...

So really we aint to bad, not compared to a country like Sweden where consumption tax bites you in the backside. Euro luxo barges may be dear, but its not really because of tax in this country but due to factors of supply and demand (how many Audi A8's are sold here?), transportation, cost of complying to ADR and RHD. Australia is still one of the few counties where the average person can afford to buy and run what in other countries is an luxury Executive saloon, the average person cant afford to run of 4.0l falcon or even a 4 cylinder Camry in the UK.

The Danish price is correct! For track use the car is “only” 1.2M DKr, taxed and registered it is 4.2M DKr, so almost 3M DKr (600.000 AUD) in taxes alone.
Many Danes register their super cars in neighbouring Sweden to avoid the taxes, and many Swedes buy brand new cars and export them from Denmark as the ex tax price is lower in Denmark than the ex-tax prices in Sweden. 25% VAT only is added when registering in Sweden.

in denmark a porsche GT2 997 comes with AU$600,000 in TAXES and you cant even drive on the road legally over there!! although thats if you want to register it

Malaysia is ~300% tax on imported cars from what I've heard from my Malay friends.

In Singapore you have to purchase a permit to purchase a car.

Well the first 3 cars are only made in left-hand drive, so the costs to convert to right-hand drive is very expensive.

Secondly you have listed the American prices in $US and Australian in $AUS. There still is a massive difference ($US66 000 = $AUS75000)

And thirdly, those $US prices don't include sales tax (if i'm not mistaken), i think it differs between states.

Obviously there will still be a difference but it's not the margins you posted.

But why compare prices with two different currencies? The smart thing to do would be to convert them to either $US or $AUS then compare.

I think you'll find the average yearly income is higher in Australia then America, so consumers will still have the same difficulties in affording one.

You can buy any of those cars in Australia for about $10k more than the US price.

All YOU have to do is re engineer them to right hand drive and ensure they comply with Australian standards to allow them to be registered.

Of course once you get it registerable you will THEN have to pay the duties and taxes involved.

Make sure you do not convert too many as you will have to start running them into walls etc.

Yeah the average income is lower in the US because of a higher proportion of uneducated citizens and imigrants from south and central america etc, lots of reasons. You'll find however for the educated person the average wage is significantly higher.

I'm sorry I cuoldn't be bothered doing the conversions, the prices are US dollars and correct.

Still however there is a massive gulf in prices due to a huge amount of tax being levied on cars in australia. I mean $75,000 australian for an RS4 is a lot less than $164,000

You can't actually do that. You can't import any vehicle that is sold in Australia, don't believe me check out the DOTARS website.

Actually yes you can. It just takes a lot more engineering to make it legal as in rebuild it from the ground up to Australian standards. The vehicle then becomes your "own" model, not what you imported.

What you cant do is just play with it a bit to make a dodgy compliance.

LCT or Luxury Car Tax kicks in at $55,000.00. Any vehicle over that amount then has to pay approximately a 60% tax to the government for every dollar over the $55,000.00.

Mate, some of their house prices are cheap compared to here.

Sure if you want to live in NYC or Beverly Hills it's expensive but you can get a house about 20 minutes outside a CBD like say Everitt just outside seattle for about $150,000.
The funniest thing about their homes though is the kind of construction they typically have in the colder climates (get snow in the winter). Due to expansion and contraction of the ground and ergo any footings in winter vs summer, the houses are made of timber frames, then all over has 20mm chip board nailed to it (including the roof), then it receives weatherboard on the walls and rubber shingles on the roof.
These houses tend to only have a life span of about 20 odd years before needing major structural repair. The same can be said for their cars. Imagine owning a brand new car, only to have it rusting out within the first year thanks to the salt and gravel used on roads in winter. I have literally seen dozens of times 1-2 year old chevy pick up trucks with rusting subframes.
That's one of the reasons there is bugger all federal tax on them in the USA. Furthermore, rego in colorado for say a lincoln town car is only $37.00 for the year.

ED Classic referenced housing prices in the USA in a comparison to here so I rebutted his insinuation that they were far more expensive than Australia. You on the other hand seem to not want to rebutt, but to be a butthead. Why don't you butt out if your attention span can only read the last comment without first referencing others to gather the gist of the comment for which it was made.

By the way, housing affordability and building materials supply and cost drastically influence housing design and construction in the USA. They have vast timber plantations for construction use and therefore use the most cost effective method to build homes possible. Bricks and ceramic are much more expensive and in my post I did not say that they could not do it, just that by in large they don't do it. If you can't grasp that concept then I suggest you see a doctor to have that chip removed from your shoulder.
