Default Ba xr8 fpv

Hi All,

I used to be on here a bit some years ago and found this forum to be excellent for info and tips etc....I am in the process of buying another Ford and need to draw on the vast knowledge out there....

I am looking at a BA Series 1 XR8 that has a Boss 290 FPV motor in it and a FPV badge under the bonnet so I feel it is real. I vaugly remember these being about back in the day but am not certain. It's not a GT but appears to be a dressed up XR8 with the 290 in it, leather interior etc....

Was this combo rare or is it an odd ball thing that someone has had made up from the factory....?

Thanks in advance for any tips/info

Cheers
Nigel

Not a factory thing at all. You could not option the 290 on a XR8.

Worth checking is if it's actually a 290 or a 260 with different rockers and badging.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply....

That was my thoughts as well and now I'm wishing I had taken a pic of the FPV badge to share.

How do you tell between 290 amd 260...?

Cheers

Check the engine number. Both were built by FPV but with the engine number, you can check records to see which is which. Visually, not much to go by if it's been dressed up. Original rego should have the engine number. It shouldn't be the same if they have a 290 in there.

I've got a 290 in my XR8 but I put it in last year. It's also modded fairly significantly (348rwkw).

Check the engine number.

XR8 260 motor starts with FPVH

GT 290 motor starts with FPVP

There you go. Knew the engine number would tell the story, just forget what to look for exactly.

Also look at the build plate for the model code:

XR8 = 18335

GT= 18336

So the plot thickens.....

Engine number starts with FPVH

Variant on Rego papers says 18335YK

It has a FPV VIN plate under the bonnet on the radiator support

revscheck says its a 6 cyl....

Owner says the guy he got it from thinks its legit however he has only had it for 2 or 3 years.....

Interesting.....

Agree, VIN will confirm what it is.

VIN says 6 cylinder. Previous owner probably did an engine swap. Not an issue per say. But claiming it to be a 290 is rubbish.

I'd walk away personally...

SO by the codes my guess is it was an XR6 Turbo manual that has had a 260 put in with a 290 plate on top

What is the best VIN decoder?

Cheers

Correct
Sometimes I can get more detail, but that's all I could find too.

can a VIN number be found from the FPV Engine Number ?

we have a donor replacement engine for a BA XR8 - licensing wants to know the original VIN of the engine that's going into the current car

So I have a dumb question and an interesting question a well…

I’m sure it has already been asked but I can’t seem to find the answer so I need to ask the question.

Can a 260 been modified to perform as a 290

The other question I have is what would you get for $13500 in 2005 if you wanted to with John Bowe Performance.

And for those who are asking the question why haven’t I tried to get in touch with John Bowe Performance is that they don’t exist today.

I have emailed John Bowe himself as he still races but he’s either busy or is sick of getting emails from others asking similar questions.
