Default What's the worse factory calibrated speedo you've come across?

For me it's consistently been Mitsubishi's .. any of them.
Rentals, work fleet cars, my mothers Lancer, my wifes Triton .. all of them have been way, way out.
For example, my wifes Triton as best I can tell, you need to be doing at least 118km/h on the speedo to be anywhere near a real 110km/h road speed.
All the Falcons / Commodores I'd driven (stock) have always been almost dead-on accurate for speed.
Seems to be getting worse with newer vehicles.
I'm assuming people see inconsistencies between speedo's and built-in GPS systems?

If they are accurate then something is wrong. I am sure that federal government legislation is that all vehicles must read under the actual speed.
I set my Fg ute on 113 by speedo and GPS 110 south Australia

Yep, my wife's Mitsubishi ASX is way out when we take her car somewhere and I plug in my accurate Garmin GPS by a good 8Km/hr out at 100.

Having said that my new 2017 Mustang is also a fair way out by at least 5km/hr under even at 60km/hr.

The best was the FG MKII XR6T at only 1 - 2km/hr under.

My first car was consistently out.

Speedo went up to 80mph but seemed to always read "ignition light mph".

Every ford I've ever owned has been out by a consistent 5kph. My wifes' BF wagon 115 = 110kph. The AU work hack is the same, 115@110kph. My Fairlane is a bit more because I run 235/45 tyres instead of the factory 225/50 series.

Talking Re: What's the worse factory calibrated speedo you've come across?

I agree with the OP. I have had the wife's 2008 Outlander & her current 2016 ASX, both were considerably out at 100km/h or 110km/h when compared to the GPS.

A couple of years ago, I was cruising my son's FG at 125km/h south of Taroom (Qld.) on the Leichardt Hwy. in the distance coming around the corner I could make out a motorcycle rider with a white helmet, Brain tells this is not correct braked straight away, it was a police motorcycle officer and he clocked me at 111 km/h, 1 point off my license (me thinks that will do ).

Many many years ago, my first car was a 1974 LH torana, 173ci 3 on the tree (ex Orange city council car, don't ask how the hell it end up in CQ), this thing would bend the needle all the way around to the odometer at the base of the speedo, the max. speed showing on the speedo was 160Km/h, Me being a person who prefers FORDS (the torana purchase is a very long story) , never wanted to believe this, so I arranged 2 mates (one an R/T Charger, the other VB Commodore) to follow me and I would put the indicators on left to right when I hit this speed, Both told me I was doing about 84 mph (Charger) 135 km/h (VB Commodore), needless to say both overtook me after this , there used to urban myth about torana owners spuiking about how much top speed they had, how can you prove them wrong though, they had seen it on their speedo!!!

You're spot on there Mick. All our work cars run a second corrected speedometer and the Camrys and Aurions were always pretty optimistic. Factory speedo indicated speed of 100 kph when corrected speed was always about 92.

Falcons were generally up around 98 and the Commodores not far off that.

I only compared my GPS and speedo the other day actually . When my digital speed was showing spot on 100 the GPS was telling me 97-98 for my 2008 FG XR6 .. The AU is about 5 kays optimistic and the little Honda Accord I also have is about 6-7 out at 100 I reckon.

My dear old Dad had a Zephyr Mk2 when I was a kid and that speedo jumped around all over the place ., The speed we were travelling at was anyone's guess. All you knew was that you were at somewhere between 20-30 , 30-40 , 40-50 etc miles per hour .

both Suzuki m/bikes run 10% over which is the max allowed by law (at indicated 100 I'm doing 90 because I'd never confirm that an indicated 110 is an actual 100 )

Mitsubishi is pretty bad. The work 2016 Pajeros were out by at least 8km/h at 110km/h.
But we just got new 2018 ones that are only out by 2 or 3 at 110km/h.

Fixed the speedo's but everything else about them is still garbage for 2018 standards.

My first car was a Morris 1100... the only time you could read a constant speed was 90Mph going flat out down hill (a very long and steep hill ) and about 1 or 2 minutes after you came to a stop (after the needle stopped spasm-ing )

Other than that... it would constantly jump back and forth about 10 - 15Mph... so you just had to go on average speed (the average of the min/max shown by the needle at any given point )

We had a Grand Voyager. Speed was 100% correct with the GPS.
My 2009 Fiesta when set at just over 111kmph on the speedo , is 100kmh on GPS.
122 is 110 on GPS.

Last time I read anything about that it was "accuracy must be within 10%".

All my recent Falcons BF 1 - 2011 FG ute have been + 2 kms.

I remember a Mazda RX 5 that was flat out beside me one my ZX10 Ninja, I could see his speedo reading 200KM/H and mine was showing 180km/h, maybe they thought they were giving me a run for my money but I went back 3 gears and cruse on 240KM/H like it was nothing.

Maybe your Torana had the wrong speedo gear drive put in the gearbox.
I found that the worst speedos were XY Falcons when doing 90mph and over the needle would bounce up and down when you hit bumps on the road and the HK Holden you got the same type of crap.

A mate had a VN commy. According to him the speedo was showing about 110 when he was Sitting side by side with me while I was driving a near new car showing a bit over 90. I GPS tested that car and it was only out by a couple of km at that speed. After realising this my mate said "no wonder everyone always overtakes me"
That car was a shot box so no wonder it was out by so much.

Yeah/Nah.
Could have a speedo issue, but it did read near enough correct speed under 100km/h, I did get done by the police radar in a built up area, doing 70 in a 60 and that was about what the speedo was reading at the time.

https://fordforums.com.au/showpost.p...6&postcount=31

Wheels magazine test back in 1977, was where I realized the toranas had a speedo issue in the higher speed regions, not just mine ; http://planetsoarer.com/ford/fast/page7.jpg

My 92 TR Magna is at most 2.5% out (i.e. it reads 2.5% faster than you're actually going).

My previous EB XR6 used to tell me I was going 120 when I was only going 105.

The 03 Forrester and the 2012 Subaru Liberty that I drive occasionally both over read by 8-9 kph at 100 kph, my FGX only over reads by 1kph at 100, however the speedo in my XM is almost spot on which is amazing considering it has the wrong tyres, wrong wheels, wrong diff, wrong gearbox, and the wrong speedo.

No speedometer can be 100% accurate all the time. A typical tyre has 2-3% diameter through tread wear over its life. Manufacturers opt for reading high, as too close to the actual and they may be liable for fines received etc.
