Default BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax???

Hey Chris and Theo,

Which of the above fuels would you boys recomend to run in my GT-P??? I have been running Shell Optimax, but have just read here on the Forums that the BP Ultimate is a better choice. I want to make sure that she has a belly full of what ever you guys suggest before I drop her off to you on Saturday.

Personally I think BP or Mobil premiums are the best and I would'nt put optimax in my cars or bikes.

Just use what you will normally use no point tuning it to Ultimate if your going to go back to running on V-Power later.

I asked the boy's the same question and was informed their choice (Read "choice" not actually fact) was BP as a better fuel. I was low when I got there so I ducked down to the BP on the Hume. Less than 5 mins away.
The more fuel in it, the more Chris will burn it off!!! (We call it refining the tune!!!!!)

If I get it tuned on Ultimate, I will switch to continue using it. Just need to find a BP station near home!!

Mobil 98 is the same fuel, comes from the same storage at Yarraville. That might give you another option closer to home.

I've been told to use BP Ultimate everytime by a few different tuners.

Can I just say that here in SA mobil are the only ones with independant delivery ships, shore tanks and transport lines and trucks. Thus meaning shell, bp, caltex etc. are all the same stuff.

Just a point of interest and it may be worth looking into because there may be a similar occurance in each state.

Yes thats sometimes the case but they have their own additive packages which affect quality and burn rate etc, etc. There is so many possible influences on fuel quality and characteristics, too many to list here. Personally here in Melbourne in regards to 98 octane petrol, I would only use and recommend Mobil 98 or BP Ultimate for ongoing consistency.
I had better add here that I sound like an advertisement for these 2 brands, this is not the case. Just connected with the transport, that's all.

Nothing but BP Ultimate EVER goes into my ute. I will risk empty to make it to a BP rather than use anything else. Chris and Theo also recommend BP Ultimate.

We race HQs up at wanneroo, and while we were able to get Shell Optimax it was far superior to BP Ultimate.
The old Optimax was the Shell V-Power 100R, which apparently is not being made anymore. The current Shell V-Power is not the same as Optimax was.

When we first could no longer get Optimax, we changed to Caltex Vortex as word of mouth was such that it would perform better on the track.
After racing a few meetings we had a spare day on the dyno, so we had the cars tank full of Vortex 98 and took a test tin of BP Ultimate that we could easily swap the connection from the tank to the test tin at the source to the fuel pump.

Without any adjustment to the carby or distributor we ran the motor for a while to empty out the residual Vortex. On the first run up on the dyno the BP Ultimate was something like 2hp higher than Vortex pretty much all the way up the curve. Each run after was higher and higher. This was 2 years ago, but from memory we finished about 5-7hp higher with the Ultimate than we got with the Vortex without changing anything.

On a modern car this would likely result in a much higher gain.

I dont work for any fuel companies, and stand to gain nothing by giving you this information. This is just my experience with the products

Fuel quality changes for state to state. We in Vic see the BP 98 seems to be the most consistant in quality for performance.

I would stay away from Caltex and Shell V-Power as they have caused the most problems so far.

Get a BP Citibank credit card while you're at it, and you get 5% off all your fuel. I only ever use BP Ultimate in my GT-P too, I've heard it's the most consistent and has minimum 98 RON rather than average 98 RON like some others may.

Yeah Mobil is the same fuel as BP just different additives. I believe BP has a longer shelf life than Mobil. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ive noticed the same with my GT its doesnt like the BP fuel ( wont idle right ) it was tuned and run on mobil 8000.

I swear by 8000 must be the purple handle and i live next door to a BP servo !!!!
My car pings on Ultimate98 from this servo but not on the Mobil 8000 fuel from Robina..
Interesting comparison though , my car ran hard on Ultimate98 from Mudgeeraba and pinged on Mobil8000 from Ashmore ???

So either my car is just very temperamental or some servos are selling 95 @ 98 price and the pumps are mixed up .....

E85 is a different story and i purchase mine from Mercury Motorsports near Harry's Diner...

In QLD, Mobil 8000 is Ultimate 98 and also V Power is Vortex 98

BP ultimate - have been running it for quite some time now and also have the car custom tuned on it.

Not sure what difference it will make if I was to run it on V power in an emergency now after the custom tune ? Both are 98 RON...........although I have had issues with Shell in the past.

I'm lucky I have 2 major BP outlets near my home and work so I always have access to Ultimate.

I have one of these cards, they are good to get the discount but
just make sure you pay the card in full before the due date, otherwise you will be paying 12-15% more from the interest charge.

I have found BP Ultimate works well after sitting for a long time, as i have the same fuel in the tank for about 8 months, and no pinging problems, and i run near 12:1 compression. I recently went in a burnout comp, sitting on 7400rpm for over a minute in top gear, and that old fuel seemed to work as well as fresh fuel. No pinging or breaking down, no dramas at all.
What sort of life does the fuel actually have?

Iv'e run nothing but BP Ultimate in my fairlane since I bought it, never have any issues with it and can get some decent fuel economy out of it, should go better once it gets tuned by Chris and Theo in November

Meant to be about 3 months in the car fuel tank but the reasoning is that it sits in the tank at the fuel station for a long time. But if your fuel is a fresh batch then your 8 months is fine as you've shown.
