Just placed on display this morning at the Ford Discovery Centre, an SGI 2400 Rack System.
SGI (Silicone Graphics) Supercomputers are used by Ford for engineering computations such as crash testing, aerodynamics and stress analysis. This dramatically reduces the need for physical testing and makes the car safer, faster, more economical to run and cheaper to purchase. Ford currently uses over 600 CPUs in their SGI Supercomputers, providing more computational power than 2500 home PCs. The SGI Supercomputers have nearly 2000 Gigabytes of memory installed, which is 8000 times more than a typical home PC. Each SGI Rack as displayed at the Ford Discovery Centre, can support 64 CPUs. This Rack stands at over 6' in height and is quite an attractive looking piece of equipment! Further information on SGI can be found on their website www.sgi.com The Ford Discovery Centre is situated on the corner of Gheringhap & Brougham Streets, Geelong Victoria. Open 6 days a week (closed Tuesdays) |
