Hi all,
Im planning on lowering my AU3 XR6 in the near future and just wanna clarify a few things. I don't want it too low, because I'm worried that it will have a negative effect on the comfort factor. So basically, I wanna know which springs are the best in terms of looks on the AU without compromising too much comfort and driving (like parking and stuff). Also, from what I've gathered from reading other posts, I would need to get suitable shocks? If so, which ones are recommended in terms of quality and price? That's about it, looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks. |

I have king spring super lows on my sedan, standard shocks, and 20"s.. let me just say its very rough.
There was a build thread where someone (just had a quick look cant seem to find it) used Eibach springs and Peder shocks i think. It looked the treat and he said it was great to drive. Eibach springs are about double the cost of king springs .. You could also go some Koni adjustables? And find where it feels most comfortable and looks good. Again expensive. But if youv got the money to spend. Something like that will look and feel great.

if you can get your hands on a set of eibachs , you wont ever buy any others , i picked up a set quite a few years ago now and i've had no drop in ride height in 6 years . but they are dear , twice the price of others , speak to damian at suspension city in nth melbourne, good knowledge of suspension.

Another vote for Eibach's. I have them in my car matched with BOGE short shocks. Very happy with the ride quality after 2 years.

Hmmm, seems like Eibach is the way to go judging by the testimonies. I had a look at their website and it doesn't seem too dear or am I missing something?
$220.00 just the springs http://www.eibach.ashop.com.au/p/523840/pro-kit.html I might go down to North Melbourne or Carshine in Tullamarine and speak to the guys down there. |

For Eibach the direct warehouse seem to still be doing them for $220 (what is the retail price?) that's basically the price i paid a bit over 18 months ago.

I'm of the opinion that it is more the shocks that make the difference to the ride quality than the springs, and I have lowered a few cars now (and sold a heap of springs) - every time I use King Springs with no issues at all.
Personally I would go with Kings SL (no point going Low height because thats what an XR is anyway) and some good shorter shocks - most of the major shock brands do them now, if you get stuck let me know and I will look you up some Monroe part numbers.

Shocks do make more difference to comfort and handling than springs do. That being said I have noticed when I have had Kings in the past they seem to ride that little bit harder. Unless its something you prefer, I still think Eibach's bought direct from the warehouse is excellent value and ride quality.

Also, on their website (Eibach) it states the approx lowered height will be 30mm-40mm, so will this be lower than the standard XR ride height?

The good thing about eibachs is that they are fed through the coiling machine die's cold , they have a patent on the process , where as other spring makers run the spring steel through the die's red hot , thus weakening the steel a little thats why cheaper springs sag after awhile.

thats a fair price, im pretty convinced about the quality and heights of the Eibachs so now time for the shocks. Boge and Koni look like a deal.

Anybody live in Meadow Heights or the nearby areas which have the square speedhumps (the ones that are cheaply bolted into the road)? I wonder if the Eibach springs will clear these without any scraping. I would hate the idea of driving over a hump and dreading that scraping sound....

It does scrape from time to time.....but cos I've still got mud guards on and a towbar, it usually just scrapes the mud guards and nothing more......so not too bad - BOGE are cheaper than Koni's and will still give solid performance - ask Shav (blueoval) - he has the Eibach's and BOGE shocks....

yeah i know them all to well . if you get 30mm lower springs should be right , mine hasn't had an issue. bilstein shocks are good to, as they are rebuildable, i can have mine rebuilt to suit any application.

Koni's and Bilsteins can be rebuilt. They are the 'ducks guts' of shock absorbers, but you will pay high for them. BOGE shocks which are german made and have been used on Audi's, Merc's and some BMW's, can be had for about $440 supplied only. They are probably cheaper else where.

Im pretty convinced on the lowered springs but the shocks are a little out of my budget at the moment. How bad can it be running them on standard shocks? My car has clocked around 130 xxx km i guess it still has the factory springs and shocks

You can still run your standard shocks on lowered springs, but you will kill what ever life is left in them quicker until u get new shocks

OP,
With eibach pro springs, ride height will be app 335mm front and 345 mm back to wheel centre on my 6cy falcon. Setup is comfortable enough for normal use. No problems with road humps at reduced speed. Only problem so far is the occasional scrapping of tailpipe on our uneven driveway. Cheers, George |

I was about to buy King Super Lows this week, looks like a bad idea!! I had a set in my Xy wagon, when jacked up they would fall out. Looks like eibachs, 220 is OK. Ride quality when lowered is what i am after, my au wagon has been reset 3.5-4" in the rear and is slightly ski boated (it sat high in the *** anyway) What are the boge shocks worth? And where from? I have to do a front wheel bearings so will do the lot at once.

Springs primarily, hold the vehicle off the road whereas the shocks control ride quality. Very difficult issue as everything must work together for the intended purpose. Too low and not enouph suspension travel for our excelant roads, and too high, too high a centre of gravity for true cornering ability. Unfortunatly a lot of people consider asthetics more important than functunality. Just remember, u can't see the car when ure driving and hopefully enjoying it. Big wheels will also affect the suspension choice, by god maintain the correct offset or it will detrementally affect the steering geometry, and true handling will not be possible. Later.............

I'll probably run it with standard shocks because I've got other priorities for the car first but I honestly do believe that if you lower than car, you will compromise comfort unless even if its a little unless you spend a lot of money.
