Post Toyota HiLux to come with vehicle tracking technology Aug 2021

"Toyota is about to introduce technology that aims to slam the brakes on thefts of one of Australia’s most stolen cars.

As reported exclusively by CarAdvice last year, thefts of the Toyota HiLux ute have more than doubled over the past 10 years as the vehicle has become more popular.

The Toyota HiLux ute has been Australia’s top-selling car for the past five years in a row and is on track to notch up a sixth annual win in 2021.

However, its popularity has also made it a target with professional car thieves.

Figures from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council show the Holden Commodore topped the hotlist of stolen cars last financial year.

However, thefts of Holden Commodores have more than halved over 10 years as Toyota HiLux thefts have soared.

Based on the latest data, thefts of Toyota HiLux utes are likely to overtake the tally for stolen Holden Commodores this financial year.

Almost a third of Toyota HiLuxes stolen in Australia are never recovered, and security experts suspect they are broken down for parts sold illegally here and overseas.

But from August 2021 onwards, examples of the Toyota HiLux bound for Australia will be equipped with embedded vehicle tracking technology to help pinpoint stolen cars – and the ability to automatically contact an SOS number that will, in turn, notify emergency services if the vehicle is involved in a serious crash.

The automatic dial-up is similar to technology introduced by Ford in certain models sold in Australia since 2014.

A confidential bulletin sent to Toyota dealers has advised the rollout of stolen vehicle tracking technology in the Toyota HiLux will start from August production this year, with the first vehicles equipped with the technology due in local showrooms from September or October onwards.

According to information sent to dealers, every model in the Toyota HiLux range will come with the embedded anti-theft tech, with the only distinguishing feature being a “shark fin” style aerial versus the current rubber “bee sting” aerial.

It’s unclear at this stage if professional car thieves will be able to circumvent the technology once the installation and location of the tracking system becomes common knowledge in the automotive repair industry.

The other cars with Toyota’s SOS and vehicle tracking technology include the Toyota Yaris Cross and recently updated Toyota Camry sedan.

Other key changes to the Toyota HiLux from August 2021 production include:

Dual zone air-conditioning will be standard equipment on SR5, Rogue, and Rugged X model grades, bringing the Toyota HiLux into line with top-end versions of rivals such as the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara.

Conspicuous by its absence, however, the updated Toyota HiLux still does not yet have individual tyre pressure monitors, even though key rivals such as the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok have had this technology for a decade.

Other changes: the Toyota HiLux Rogue will gain a 360-degree camera; the four-camera set-up is not available on other HiLux models at this stage.

Toyota Australia is yet to confirm any of the above information and the dealer bulletin says that while care has been taken regarding the accuracy of these details, the final specification is subject to change.

CarAdvice will update this story once the changes become official."

All part of their Connected Vehicles System. Security is the first phase.
There is a LARGE amount of data being collated and stored about the vehicle that may not be processed in the initial phases. But what they plan to do with the data (over next 5+ years) has me worried.

This should sell a lot of aftermarket shark-fin antennæ; the cheap way to make it look like your PovoLux is a tracked one.

This really isn't anything new, pretty sure the top of the line Aurion had it years ago.

surely the police & insurance can confirm how most thefts occur, ie easily grab ignition wiring, etc etc then you eliminate the easy access to steeling.
Wouldnt prevention be better than cure? or am I ignorant of something important.

Only ever had one car stolen and was glad when it did happen.

It seems a lot of anti-theft measures may be circumvented, look at ZA for example. Thieves use jamming devices to alter the signal.

Toyota always a decade behind.

The stolen ones probably turn up in the middle east with a machine gun mounted to the tray.

I think tow trucks are probably part of what happens these days, unlike many years ago.

They can drag anything away, even when wheels are locked or cant turn, no need to break in, unlock, start etc etc.

In these scenarios, only tracking the cars, and parts, would be of any use.

An interesting statistic or two from 2019 regarding stolen vehicles
1. Keys taken in a burglary........37%
2. Keys left in the vehicle..........18%

Half of all thefts could be avoided by preventing access to the keys.

Being from Nth Qld, lots of Hiluxs up here and Townsville/Cairns have a major car theft problem with the little darlings driving between the cities.
Hilux/Ranger/Colorado's are a favourite target as they can ram cops out of the way.
But they will take whatever they can get.
The best car theft device is to have an old banger with a manual gearbox.

Cops do a good job and catch them then judges let them out because the law says to???
Govt in Brisbane denies there is a problem.

True most are stolen via the kids stealing the keys while you sleep but FFS these brats need to be in jail...

Theft by robbery is alarming........5%, one in twenty thefts that way is very concerning.
I was talking about the easier 50% of thefts that could be avoided by putting keys out of sight...

I'd rather leave my keys by the door so they just grab the cars and **** off, if you hide them further in the house they come in looking and you increase your chances of aggravated burglary.

Happened to one of my colleagues, 8 of them come into the house then armed themselves from the kitchen drawer.

If the keys were at the door they'd just grabbed the keys and ****ed off in the cars which they took anyway.

Cars are insured anyway so it's not worth the opportunity to lose your life in the scuffle.

for me its the damage they cause with your vehicle to other humans.

Fairly safe where we live, 5k driveway from road, 3 Alpacas, 2 randy goats, 1 Dodermann & 1 Maremma. Be a brave drunken idiot who ventures up our driveway at night. I did it once (not drunk) never again.

Pretty sure fg-x falcons did this like 6 years ago ( the crash and dialing 000 feature .
All new fords have the gps tracking in Built in already with FordPass.. this allows you to track your own car down and take care of the little ****s that stole it yourself.
Since the cops are hopeless, even with gps tracking they would still put it on the to hard basket.

Cops are not the problem here, they catch them quickly...its always the same kids.

Its stupid laws that let kids with 5 page rap sheets back out again for their 47th "last chance"...kids are laughing at the system...

Politicians just blame the other side and wont do anything that might offend the criminals lest they play the race or victim card.

Saying "the car is insured" is a cop out...everyone with insurance just pays more next year for these #$@$ having fun. I'm not saying to get killed over a car but it has got to be taken more seriously by govt.

If you are old enough to be breaking into my house or taking my stuff you are old enough to do some hard time for it!

Hopefully it works better than the "brakes" on a Hilux...

Figures from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council show the Holden Commodore topped the hotlist of stolen cars last financial year.
It shows how thieves have poor taste.
