Your driving conundrums.

Thought I’d start a post about our unexplained driving conundrums that suddenly pop up and difficult to explain.

My first conundrum is light bulbs.

Why is it your originally new car can go for years without any burnt-out light bulbs and then suddenly you get a spate of them.

My case, bought new 2017 Transit Custom, no issue until late last and more recently in the last 3 months we’ve replaced 3 brake-light globes, one reverse light and one rear lhs indicator, mix of lhs & rhs. Plus two rear interior cargo area bulbs and one headlight globe.

Navara and Repco brands…why, why why…...and who new there were bulbs with offset & even pins and this Transit Custom doesn't use offset. 15D vs 15S

I guess it’s getting to that age where they’re wearing out. I bought a brand new Jimny a few years ago and the running light blew within a few months and it was $220 replacement since you couldn’t just buy a cheap globe. They tried to tell me too bad lights are consumable and I’ll have to pay for it.

I had a weird one several years ago. Among several other vehicles, I have a 2006 Nissan Navara D22 ute and a 2008 Hyundai i30. One night I noticed the brake lights were illuminated on the ute, which was parked and locked in the driveway. I went out and ended up disconnecting the brake light switch until I could look at it the next day.

It turned out that the little plastic pad on the brake pedal that contacts the switch had disintegrated. Nissan wanted some stupid amount of money for this little pad so I went down to the big green shed and bought a pack of about 6 or 8 of those little pads that you stick on the bottom of chair legs and so on to protect your floors. Popped one of those into position and it worked perfectly.

I kid you not, the very next day the i30 did exactly the same thing and got the same fix.

Those little pads are still in both cars and the problem has never reoccurred!

5c piece and superglue work as well, just gotta make sure your finger doesn't stay there!

Same happened on our i40, Hyundai replaced it to my surprise 😮

if speeding is so dangerous, and the government want us to slow down, why do all state and regional budgets account for speeding ticket income in their figures. Surely they should assume $0?

Because people speed regardless and Governments (and you) know they will get income from speeding fines. Good budgeting involves making reasonable estimates of all income so why would you not budget for it. Your question is akin to suggesting that we should close all prisons as the Government has educated everyone about the law so they won't be needed.
