Critical updates come out all the time for all hardware and software technologies. As an end user, your best bet is to set auto update on, and schedule the updates to be installed immediately. You only really need to delay updates if you have to test e.g. for business, or if data limit is a problem.

Chrome generally updates itself.

Update to Brave Browser, less spying, and it strips annoying ads out, even out of youtube.

Don't quit your day job.

That is absolutely reckless advice...seriously.

but what if my day job is to look after end users?

Well, you could wait...until you get hacked....then complain....then do your update.

You dont... which is why id advise people to not use devices and go talk in a field like the previous generation of underworld did, if they have anything to communicate that they dont want authorities to know about.

I'm already being tracked after my covid needle.
Also my 5G coverage is excellent.
No need to worry about Google.

I'd advise anyone to enable auto deployment of CPUs. Users in corporate environments will be governed by their own IT standards. But private users should just leave it on.

It's becoming more common for even infra to be autonomously patched.

Upgrades are another matter....

For a home user, whats the diff? Its a critical patch update, not a vaccine You can usually roll back, and/or the supplier usually issues another update if the previous one causes issues, which is quite rare.

Different for business, where some coys write their own apps to work with certain version of browsers, so everything needs to be tested first.

For a PC with anyone as a user you should never allow updates except out of hours.

I have seen people lose work...important work because Microsoft decided to restart the computer after installing updates.

I have also seen updates that fail and the PC needs intervention to roll back...taking several hours of frustration.

Those are my concerns for uncontrolled updates, but even for phones you get the likes of Apple rolling out patches that deliberately slow machines down to mitigate battery life warranties....how wonderful.

Control S is your friend. I'm still on windows 7, no real want to move to windows 10, and it doesn't auto restart. Our windows 10 at work does auto restart though, but they give you a 20 min warning. Bloody annoying when you are half way through a presentation.

Never auto updates for an enterprise. Auto updates mostly fine for home users.

At work I just set it to apply out of hours except for the rare critical updates you have no choice in. Very rarely have I lost work even though our network is ****.

I've been using Ubuntu on my now 10yr old Dell XPS laptop since Win7 support expired. Update experience is fairly seamless and don't seem to have any issue at all. Given it a second wind.

Having said that I have had to go through a lot of ****ing nonsensical commands to accomplish what I want
