Default Ok, what is wrong with people! Hoarding toilet paper...

Serious question... What is wrong with people!

I've just read that a woman in Ipswich has been to all the Coles, Woolworths and our Costco just to replenish the family toilet paper... But they have been sold out! Costco opened early this morning 9.50am and their entire stock was sold out in 10mins!

People suddenly thinking that the Coronavirus is the beginning of Doomsday... What is wrong with people!

I'm down to 3-4 rolls, so I'd better travel to Brisbane for a pack of 12...

I wonder if convenience stores still have stock, mini marts, 7-11, servos and milk bars etc. Rather pay double $ than drive, park and search all the bigger stores.

Is driven by the media advising of likely shortages in the case of a pandemic. BTW I think you mean "Hoarding" as "Hording" is defined as forming or gathering in a large moving group and I don't think we have hords of toilet paper descending up us yet; but who knows perhaps that going to be the next apocalyptical event. :-) Sorry; I know what you meant and don't mean to be a spelling Nazi but I couldn't resist that one as I now can't get image of hords of toilet paper rolls out of my head; something like the Windows flying toaster screensaver.

I shop for this item as required; it had come due for replenishment. Took three shops to find a packet. As I watched, an entire pallet was picked off. This was at 8:20 today. As I left Woolies, I could see people lining up for the yet-to-open Aldi.

The lack of budget priced (89¢) penne is more concerning to me. It’s taken pasta salad off the shelves.

I used to find the Southern Chinese custom of washing your heat treated and vacuum sealed crockery and cutlery in lukewarm tea to protect from a possible SARS* outbreak hilarious... But now... According to our actions, maybe they have a point.

* Stupid autocorrect.

Last week I was driving to go shopping and they were talking about people possibly starting to buy up all the staples, including dunny paper.

Got my usual shopping, including 3x12 pack loo paper (the shelves were all full) and thought nothing of it.

Went out today and both Coles and Woolies stripped bare.

I think the best option is for people to get in as much online shopping for it across all the stores in the hope one order comes through.

I'm good for a month or 2...

It's sad to hear of families that just buy enough to get them through a week being down to their last roll with little hope of getting more.

Let's hope the ramped up production catches up with the public demand.

I was listening to the radio today as you tend to do in the car, and as per usual with all the media hype, toilet paper was a topic on the news. Some anus expert came on and his reasons for all the panic were people paranoid theyd get the virus and have to go into self isolation, people thinking we import rolls from china, people sending rolls overseas, and simply others jumping on the band wagon.
One of the old blokes i work with sent me a photo today being a smart alec. He maintains 2 buildings that are attached, so a combined 104 floors. He took a photo of the toilet paper store room which is huge and packed, captioned he thinks he has enough. Being 104 floors, the huge room only lasts 2 weeks between restocks, but only a few days when there are gastro outbreaks.

Woolies CEO just sent out an email:

Quote:
Dear Jason,

I’d like to update you on the shortages we’re seeing in toilet paper and other essential items.

As you may have read, or seen for yourself, these are unusual and challenging times. We know it can be frustrating when we don’t have the products you need, or when delivery or Pick up windows are filled more than usual.

We’re working very closely with our suppliers to get products onto shelves as quickly as we can. The makers of Kleenex, Sorbent, Quilton and Woolworths own range of toilet paper have all increased their production to meet this very unusual demand.

For example, the makers of Kleenex are now manufacturing 24 hours, 7 days a week at their Millicent, SA factory, as are Sorbent in their NSW and Victorian facilities. And the makers of Quilton have tripled their normal production across their factories in Queensland, NSW and WA.

It’s worth noting that the vast majority of products aren’t affected and most stores aren’t seeing significant shortages. But to make sure everyone has access to essential items, we’ve introduced some common-sense limits to a few products. We’ve limited toilet paper to 4 packs per transaction and large packs of rice (2kg and over) to 1 per transaction. Where available, hand sanitiser is now at the Customer Service Desk and limited to 2 per transaction.

We’re constantly monitoring the situation and will do our best to keep all products freely available to everyone. However, if we see new shortages, we may introduce other limits. We’ll only do this if we think it’s absolutely necessary and to help make sure all customers can access the products they need. We’ll keep you updated in our stores and on our website as things change.

Our team members are doing the very best they can, so please support them, and each other.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this together.

Brad Banducci
CEO Woolworths Group

It’s the old hysterical fomo trick. If the shelves are empty, there must be a shortage, quick, buy, buy, buy!
This just shows that as a society, we are one news story away from total and uncontrolled breakdown of order.
It’s just like the baby formula crap, there’s no shortage, it’s just that a supermarket that sells 100 cans a week suddenly goes to 1000 per week, it takes some time for the supply chain to catch up.
I was in a Foodland today, they had 12 pallets of toilet paper in their store room to last weeks, it was emptied in 2 days, just madness.

How long before there is a run on the banks?

It's not like the money is earning any interest.

Toilet paper, pasta, books, paracetamol....

Next it will be gas bottles and camping gear.

Here's a link to a website that gives all the up to date numbers in an easy to read format.
https://www.worldometers.info/corona...navirus-cases/
China looks like it is turning the tide compared to the rest of the world.

It's worth noting there are only about 40,000 total active cases at the moment not the nearly 100,000 cases the press like to focus on.

Now the WHO says the world must knuckle down to contain the virus and our powers that be say we can't contain it, sounds like they've given up and are moving to phase 2.
We have 30 active cases here, scoop them up and stick them in quarantine because telling them to stay at home is not good enough IMO.

That's exactly right...

There was a guy on the radio yesterday talking about the limit. There is no common sense to how it's applied. It's per pack.

So, when the shopper went to buy paper for his family there were only single rolls left. Only allowed to buy 4 single rolls.

Yet, if there was a 24 pack of paper you could also buy 4 packs of that 24 rolls....

Oh, and I can tell you that paper is being now sent overseas by post.

Sound familiar???
