I can't believe what I saw today. There was a dark grey Eunos driving through Clayton with a large swastika taped across the bonnet. WTF???
I understand this symbol has a different meaning in some cultures but if these guys weren't neo nazi's or something, you'd think they'd know enough not to display it like that. :

was it a swastika, did the arms point clockwise or anticlockwise. Anticlockwise is the buddist(I think) symbol for peace, albeit not often used after the winter of 1945

Yeah, it means peace and equality and things like that, Hitler reversed it and twisted it 45 degrees to mean hatred and superiorness.
Although it freaked me out a bit the first time I went into a Buddist temple, seeing it on the foreheads of the big Buddahs |

I'd certainly hope so.
I am not a buddhist, but their beliefs I respect. But if it was a swastika, then I'd spit on the car. Enough said from me. |

Just asking for trouble. I think people who deliberately do stuff like this i.e. use offensive language, symbols etc just for shock value ought to be shocked themselves - with a car battery to the groin.

The swastika as used by the nazi's had its open face turning clockwise, and was not always turned at 45deg..

Hitler didn't design the swastika, it's actually quite old. Everyone's free to express themselves etc etc yadda yadda yadda.. BUT. If your views are so out of whack with the rest of the world as this then you have to be prepared to accept the consequences when people want to drag you from your car and beat you to a pulp. And the rest of us cheer them on.

The Swastika is only a symbol of the death of many jews...
I don't think genocide is a welcome thing on this forum, or anywhere else on Earth at that... |

The nazi's stole/borrowed the swastika from the Tibetans whom use it as some sort of religious symbol. But people recognise in this day and age for what it stood for in the 30/40s.

I actually thought it originated much, much earlier and was used by Native American Indians - obviously with a completely different meaning to what Hitler gave it.
It certainly asks for trouble in this day and age.

To put the record straight for once and for all......from wikipedia
Quote "The swastika (from Sanskrit स्वस्तिक svastika, from su "well", and asti "being", thus "good fortune" or "well-being") is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles in either left-facing (卍) or right-facing (卐) direction. The swastika is a sacred symbol in Hinduism and Jainism. The Hindu version is often decorated with a dot in each quadrant." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika There is a pic there, so if you want to check if that was the one you saw or not. If it wasnt then the person is a bloody nazi hilarious too seeing he is driving a japanese car... edit: had a chat with dad (our family has indian origins and seems to be more to the story.... quote from wiki again (the germans didn't really steal it just used it for badness) "The symbol experienced a resurgence following the archaeological work in the late nineteenth century of Heinrich Schliemann, who discovered the symbol in the site of ancient Troy and associated it with the ancient migrations of Proto-Indo-Europeans ("Aryan" people). He connected it with similar shapes found on ancient pots in Germany, and theorised that the swastika was a "significant religious symbol of our remote ancestors," linking ancient German, Greek and Vedic culture.[1] [2] By the early 20th century it was widely used worldwide and was regarded as a symbol of good luck and auspiciousness." |

In germany its illegal to display the swastika or sing Uber alles. Here its not.
A simular symbol is used by those mostly around the tibet region as a health symbol and is often found all over hosptials etc in that region. While its a very prevolkative symbol, it is popping up more and more. WWII was 50 years ago and people are forgetting what happened. These days only idiots use it. Even the right wing groups have stopped using it. Then again I suppose these days if you painted a lebonese or Israeli flag on your car that would most likely draw almost as much attention.. The iron cross is actually the maltese cross. A widely used symbol, for ages, some right wing groups are now using that instead. But given its wide usage I don't think it will offend that many people. Don't forget the Germans and the Japanese had a alliance during WWII. The germans gave them a lot of technology. They had plans for german jet fighters, subs, V1/V2 missiles, and were going to continue with Germanys nuclear program after germany fell. To some people, the rising sun flag is just as bad as a swastika. |
