Anzac day crowds

The crowd in Jimboomba for the Anzac day ceremony was huge this morning, as I suspect they are huge around the country.

ANZAC day is growing rapidly, 100th anniversary of ANZAC has gathered huge interest.

proud to watch as the onlookers get younger and younger every year and the knowledge of what happened is spread and the understanding of just what was sacrificed (rightly or wrongly) is gained.

We went to the shrine here in Melbourne ,left at our normal time( been going for 10 years now) it was the busiest I have seen it .

You are completely correct. However I was not intending to convey any sense of superiority (the ugly side of nationalism)by using that word...

Nationalism is not what you are saying at all.

Loyalty, devotion, community and healthy independence, are characteristics that make a nation healthy and true greatness comes from this.
You don't sell yourself out to grubs that will walk all over you.

the biggest thing to remember from this from my perspective is to remember all those who died fighting for nothing. Many wars were fought for great ideals and alot were fought for egos or no reason at all thats what makes me saddest the most on this day.

I have visited Gallipoli twice, I was blown away by many things, how close the trenches were to "the enemy", they could have thrown stones at each other, the whole area (Gallipoli peninsular) is a national park and war memorial, the Turks talk about " The Canakkale spirit" which to me sounds exactly the same as "The ANZAC spirit".
On my second visit my friends and I decided to sleep over night in the national park in our camper van. The police came to check us out, saw the Australian Flag in our back window gave it a pat like you would give someone on their back and allowed us to stay the night......”

Those casualty figures are quite extraordinary considering the Turks had the higher ground. Maybe naval bombardment contributed much to Turkish casualties?

Yes maybe, but let us not underestimate the fact that the Turks were out numbered and defending their homeland...

well, i marched, with my man & his father (their family has traceable military history from malaya back to the crimean war)
It was the biggest crowd I have ever seen in penrith, we have been doing this for about 8 years now & even the number of marchers was up, although there were a few in the lines that were wearing just ordinary hoodies & no medals - not sure if they were supposed to be there.
Sadly though, there are always those there for the wrong reason. The razzle puts on free breakfast aftet the march. There were people waiting at the door to get in before the march had even started

My sons primary school invited him to participate in laying a wreath at the Wollongong dawn service. I told all the family to get ready and wake up early, I'm so glad we went and the crowd was huge.
Its important for kids to realise that even tho things have changed a lot in 100 years, what the ANZACS did, their pride in our country and the values they believed in are still so important to remember today.

I am always in awe of Turkey in allowing Remeberance events to happen on their soil. Would we allow Japan to do the same in Darwin? Granted not exactly the same situation, but we were invading their shores.

I've been going to the Richmond (NSW) Dawn service for many years and always find it a moving experience.

This year as it was the centenary the RSL's decided to combine Windsor & Richmond's service in Richmond, and whilst I didn't like the idea I understand their logic

I'm not sure of the official numbers but it was BIG for our area and due to the recent rain may of the open grassed or unsealed parking that would normally be used for this type of event was closed and as a result the traffic and parking was horrific.

unfortunately the council saw this as an opportunity and issued quite a few infringement notices (I was parked safely and legally so I wasn't one of them, that or I was parked so far from the service the parking officers couldn't write tickets and walk that far in the time given to them)

I've since heard whispers that the Hawksbury will continue to be a combined service, if that's the case I'll be heading up to Kurrajong (I should have gone there this year I think, as all reports were that it was busier than normal but still a very moving interment experience)

I don't think any side actually understood exactly why they were fighting as the causes were many, yet hardly worth the carnage that followed...

The Public holiday will always fall on the 25th of April regardless if it is a Saturday or Sunday. The reason we don't get it on the Friday or Monday (to make a long weekend) is if that was the case many people would use it as a reason to get away for the weekend and not be in a position to attend ANZAC day ceremonies. It was brought in a few years ago and I for one am totally in agrrement on this one.

while we lost that battle, the allies won the war. The right to access this part of Turkey in perpetuity was apparently written into Turkey's document of surrender.
