Default Fuel pump on the way out?

Hey guys,

Own an EF fairmont, and having a few troubles with it. basically:

1. That whine noise (is that the fuel pump?) when you click the ignition to ON sounds strange now. It is much shorter, and almost sounds like something when the battery is running out. Not healthy!
2. Revs are dropping while i am driving, especially when accelerating. Car jumps sometimes from a standstill.
3. The whine noise continues while i am driving. Didn't a week ago. Plus it is from the boot area.

Does this sound as though the fuel pump is on it's last legs?

Cheers.

yep... sure does.

Have you recently ran your tank quite dry? This is a common cause for fuel pump failure. In my EL, i once ran it bone dry, and the pump died about 2 weeks later!

Easy enough to replace though.... Just gotta be patient and have abit of initiative!

If you need help, let us know, and I'll guide you through as much as I can.

Cheers

Matt

Nah, haven't let it go right down, always fill up when it is 1/4.

I think it may have been on the way out for a while. Every now and again the revs just dropped.

Any particular type of pump I should get, or just the standard ford one should be fine? May have a look to see if I can do it myself. Otherwise will just let someone who knows what they are doing deal with it!

fuel pump in these cars really is quite easy. just need patients. you could do it yourself. second hand pump is only about 60 bucks from a wreckers.

You're better off buying a brand new one.

For what its worth I find it easier to drop whole tank with little fuel in it and changine pump with tank out..At the same time clean the tank etc completly may as well fit new filter also...

Hmm, problem has now gone away. Maybe it was blocked, or maybe it is just tricking me, and will just die all of a sudden. Ah well, if it dies it dies. See how we go.

i'd be replacing it before it leaves you stranded and needing a tow.....
you know its on its way out so you'd be silly not to just replace it IMO
