Question xr6 cam

After getting the xr6 serviced yesterday i asked the mechanic how much to install a camshaft for me.A whole $120.00. So my next question is for a ef xr6 and without going ballistic what would be a decent cam to get.?And what is the story on shims.? Who supplies them.?Actually what do they do.?
