Probably should stop calling it a highway now.
90 down to 70 for the first leg and then 90 to 80 for the rest into town So now, the idiots drive at 60 (just to be safe) and traffic becomes even more congested. Woe is me. |

Are you talking Keilor Melton highway? Or Western highway (Thru Rockbank)?

You gotta be kidding usernametaken? That road plugs up like a fat kid's digestive system after having a jar of peanut butter at 90km/h, goodness knows how bad it will be now.

Man I used to go spare driving back on the Calder, I remember the days of 100/110 and its now a joke.
I used to travel to Geelong a bit and got so sick of it I just went the back way through Bachus Marsh!

Yep, I often use that road, and because all the traffic now bunches up, it makes it awfully difficult to enter onto it from Leakes Rd. More dangerous IMO.

I thought they were getting rid of 90 and 70 zones. I remember the days when it was 100 most of the way. 80km/h is a **** when there are no houses around and even with houses 80 is still fine. Would be great to know how Vicroads worked out the risk matrix on the new speed zones.

yes, it's a very unsafe road, i've seen 1 accident in 12 months & that was a single car into a tree.
the nice amount of speed cameras now make it so much safer.

Roadworks... it's only a $5.5million project so I'm not expecting much. Forgot to write down the project number the other day so I can check the Vicroads website.

Back in 2007, nothing annoyed me more than the Calder Hwy near green gully rd resurfaced, widened, then the limit changed to 80. Why bother repairing the road in the first place? Should have just left the limit at 100 and have traffic flow better, or just leave the road in disrepair and drop it to 80.

Imo maybe they are investing or finding ways to gain more revenue from speeding fines then safety.
I been very suspicious of the authorities since I been fined once for speeding over 8klm on a 60klm zone, i was snapped right where it starts 80klm from 60klm. So im very suspicious when they do things like this. Last edited by XW-BAXR6T; 21-06-2013 at 07:12 PM. Reason: added more. |

One of my friend's works at vicroads. According to him, the plan of 40km limits is to get us used to driving slower as there is a plan across the board to drop speed limits all over Victoria. Doncaster Rd near Shoppington is now 60km and same with Heidelberg Rd in Clifton Hill. Also all the 40km zones on smith st, johnston st and other roads from 7am until 12am. There are more cars on the road and the only way to resolve the problem is not by trying to get people on public transport, but just dropping speed limits. Also there is rumour Melbourne CBD will be shut down to all vehicles. Hope it's not true.

Apparently the other reason for dropping speed limits from 100kph to 80kph is to reduce wear and tear on roads (particularly from heavy vehicles) thus avoiding costly upgrades.

So the 'upgrades' are finished, and it sucks even more than before.
People now sit at 70 all the way through (even though it ups to 80 from the bridge) Mind you those people can speed up to 100 in the overtaking section.. |

(Pass you doing 90 when it's 80, move to the right and stay at 90 in the 100kph section.)

Agreed, its absolutely ridiculous that section is 70kph. I don't go through there much these days but at Xmas I did and couldn't believe how stupid it was. Even before at 80 kph it was ridiculous. 90 is a more reasonable limit along there.
I often wonder what goes through the minds of those responsible for setting these ridiculous speed limits, do they actually drive much?? |

So here's the sequence of events, we [ the taxpayer ] subsidise 2 companies to make vehicles capable of 200km/hr for long distance travel in this country.
The same taxpayers then employ baboons to constantly reduce speed limits and increase penalties. Then these same baboons charge higher registration, insurance and licence fees forcing us to drive rice rockets on roads that are better than they've ever been. The writing is on the wall folks, small cars using less fuel travelling at 40km/hr, costing an arm and a leg each year to keep in your garage. The nanny state mentality has infected all levels of government, they are protecting us from ourselves. In a couple of generations from now 50klm/hr will be considered to be driving at an extremely dangerous speed. Silver Ghia, you ask what goes through the minds of those setting speed limits? Baboons don't think much from what I've seen, eating, procreating and climbing trees and rocks, but even they couldn't be this stupid could they? |

Know what makes the road bad?
People driving on it. It Seems to be a moronic driving magnet. Fair enough the limits are probably too slow, but thats what they are, tailgating and dangerously overtaking because people think they should be doing 80 instead of 70 or 90 instead of 80, thats what makes the road dangerous. (I am a regular user too)

He needs all the fine revenue he can get to pay for the west link we arn't getting. Hopefully all those unnecessary 60's go back up eventually.

Its great they've put a stop to changing 90 zones to 80, and 70 zones to 60, regardless of the particular roads. Stupid idea IMO, only meant to slow people down for no apparent reason except to get extra revenue from frustrated drivers. If anyone gets confused with the speed limit for a particular section of road, whether its an odd or even numeral, they are not concentrating sufficiently on their driving.
