It looks like Australia soon will replace ageing Holden Caprice models to chauffeur MPs around. Car models will typically be MB E220 or BMW 520d, (also Hyundai and Toyota could be on the trial list). Funny enough, the Labour party's industry spokesman wants to give preference to manufacturers that promises to kit out the cars with Australian parts and engineering services. I suggest we could have a go at assisting the shadow minister with proposing some parts lists or photo shopped images of kitting out some of the two mentioned models with some Australian made accessories I don't have full overview of parts / accessories made in Australia, but I would expect parts from the Old Man Emu catalogue, and supercharger kits from Harrop to be a good start for Australian engineered or made parts. Any other ideas? Cheers,

I don't know why this is even news worthy, not having a go at the OP, but seriously WTF do the media think we are going to buy now - have they only just caught on FFS
I have been saying for years that ALL Government Departments should have, by law been forced to purchase Aussie made cars. 80 to 85% of Commodore and Falcon sales went into fleets

Local Councils which as a collective group are the biggest segment of fleet sales abandoned the Local Car industry. There was never any regulatory requirement on them to buy local and when someone mentioned about legislation requiring Local Councils to buy Locally made cars where possible there was screams of Political interference on their independence.

Maybe, these politicians should really be FOR the people and buy USED vehicles?
It is an outdated privilege that these dopes in government be given, in many cases, a vehicle that most ORDINARY Aussies can't afford. While they are at it, get rid of the charges levelled at imported cars? it's ALL there is NOW. |

Given the large R&D presence that Ford and Holden have post manufacturing maybe the Comcar fleet should be composed of mondeos and commodores. You could even look at adding Nissan since I think they still run a casting plant. Beats me why they need BMWs and Mercedes given they are essentially being driven sedately and mainly in urban surrounds and by a chauffeur.

My employee has that policy and we are a business of over 400 employees. All bosses, even CEO provide their own car. We do have a fleet of vehicles but they are for work related duties

If they're after LWB goodness and prestige then they can travel 2nd hand Genesis and bank it into the budget surplus. Excellent Euro-spec at a fraction of the cost.
