Default WTF is Emo?

OK, I may be showing my age now, and I never thought I was going to be one of those 30 something people who lost touch with current trends, words, language etc...

But WTF is Emo? I keep seeing it on these forms in particular. Is it like the opposite of bogan? Like, the oversensitive, girly male? I seemed to have just missed something with that...

And no links thanks!

Cheers

Jac :P

I know you said no links, but a google image search revealed these (while also defiling my internet cache) informative guides which explain it pretty well.
http://www.dobi.nu/emo/girls.htm
http://www.dobi.nu/emo/boys.htm

If you don't want to look at those, from what I have gathered from other people, emo is like a sad/pathetic version of a goth or something (don't hold me to that, I don't have a degree in emology). I don't like them.

It's like a new phase for all the kiddies who feel like..... I dunno - society is against them and they need to be different. Trouble is, they all look the same!! Kinda of like a new-age punk you could almost say.

And yes, as far as I'm aware it is short for "emotional" hehe.

It is supposed to be "emotional" but has taken on a strange new direction over the past 18 months or so...

Comes from a derivation of punk rock. Back "in the day" it was bands like Blink182, the Ataris (both bands i have no specific objection with) etc. who were considered "emo". Hard/fast punk rock music with adolescent lyrics.

In a more contemporary context - it's taken a few pages from the book of goths and to a lesser extent - heavy metal. Assisted by the rise in popularity of "screamo" which is "emo" type punk rock with a lot of scream vocals/heavy rythm guitar.

The contemporary emo look is the jet black mop top with a long fringe, often covering one side of the face. "Stovepipe" black jeans, converse all stars and something like a Misfits T-shirt - despite the fact many will have never heard a misfits song and in all likelihood, after getting picked up from the city in mum's BMW X5 - will go home and blog about My Chemical Romance or The Used on their MySpace account. Badges on clothes/bags and heshen backpacks provide a retro flavour to the theme.

The attitude will often be one of being depressed and downtrodden despite predominantly upper/middle class backgrounds (those CD's, broadband connections and body art items dont pay for themselves). A lot of the alleged angst supposedly stems from poor experiences with the opposite sex (gay rights still has some progress to be made in the world of emos) altho a strong female contingent of this subculture often finds the male the subject of female advances.

Unfortunately I am all to familiar with the crowd. Having become a punk rock enthusiast during the early/mid 1990s, the shows/venues I frequent are unfortunately crawling with these kids. Fine by me... i'll be at the bar.

If you're looking for some real word examples - check out rundle mall, near gawler place or mall's balls on a friday afternoon. As i glance at the clock now, i believe the city would be full of them at the moment.

I gave in to temptation and looked at the links... excellent. I get the idea now... and it seems I know/have seen a quite a few emos... my 8 year old son laughed at one at the shops the other day.... thought he was a girl and commented that he would never get a haircut like that. LOL

Your son is correct to ridicule their behaviour and he should be encouraged to do so!

Hehehe.

Have you met Cam? I dont think he is emo either... He is a big tough kid, loves AFL and cricket, listens to Linkin Park, hates his sister's techno style music, loves our XR6 and XR8 and hates his father's rice Corolla and gets into fights all the time at school (more like brawling while playing footy).

Lol, i think ive seen him running amok up at a cruise... but fair to say that emo's dont typically:

- play footy
- listen to LP
- know what an XR6/Xr8 is
- know what rice means.

So sounds like you're in the clear.

Whats the connection with birds dying? Or is it just about getting emotional about living things dying generally? The more I hear, the more I dont like.

For all I care they are just another bunch of attention starved kids who want people to notice them because they are different. usually with straight pointy hair and listening to what they think is punk music (even though it isn't anything like the good old stuff).
