There’s no clear wording on the “Vehicle safe for use” declaration.
It would suit me to drive an unregistered ute 60km each way to and from a repair event, without the tub. I can make a light board for the rear easily, using the trailer plug. Occasionally I see new utes getting around on a trade plate with no tub or tray, but no idea if they’re subject to the same controls. Has anyone recent experience in NSW, of driving a “naked” ute or small truck on a permit? |

I thought you needed a blue slip as well as the permit. I know you needed a blue slip if you bought an unregistered vehicle at auction to drive home.
edit you need rear wheel coverings ....mudguards etc flaps.

No, don’t need a blue slip for an unregistered permit on a “complying vehicle” (this excludes crane trucks, harvesters etc) in NSW. The official form is here:
https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents...eclaration.pdf Q7 is the apparent arbiter, but it just handballs responsibility. I don’t want to double handle the tub, it’s adding risk of incidental damage and wasted time. I have spare flaps, could make a ply sheet with them fitted, to span the rear wheels. |

In Qld the one thing that needs to be done is some form of mud guards/wheel covers over the rear uncovered wheels.
I often see new trucks with 2 or 3 metal angle brackets bolted to the chassis with shade cloth covering the wheel Or you could use ply as you mention above. |

I’ll throw a sheet of ply over the wheels, that should do it. Did read an insightful comment online about stones flicking up; fair call not to be a pain to others on the road.

Yep, me too. You do need to cover the rear wheels with guards, plastic, ply with mudflaps.
Bare rear tyres is like waving a red flag.

I was driving my one tonner around with no tray while it was being repaired, I was pulled over for this and yellow stickered (unroadworthy), written on my work order was that I needed to have a mud guard covering the rear of the tyre to just below the axle line and the tail shaft needs to be covered from the top?, I suppose everything else can hang out.

Compliant homemade rear guards, cover over the front tailshaft, rear light bar and number plate while being converted the first time but fortunately still in rego. Drove it from Sydney to Wangaratta, little bumpy on concrete sections of the Superslab.
