One of the most expensive police cars used in Australia has gone up in flames following a chase in north-eastern New South Wales.
Key points: A police car, worth around $200,000, catches fire after parking in long grass at the side of the road following a pursuit A witness says it was extraordinary how quickly the vehicle went up in flames A motoring expert says it was probably due to the diesel particulate filter in burn-off mode The turbo diesel BMW highway patrol car had been pursuing a sedan being driven by a teenager near Tweed Heads. The chase ended in long grass on the edge of the Pacific Highway at Chinderah after road spikes were laid, puncturing the fleeing vehicle's tyres.

Didn't the Ford Ranger have a recall for this? Dry grass catching fire on the exhaust.

Not the first time its happened, rule number one on a farm... don't park on the long grass.
Funny, I did a traffic management course a few weeks back. Captain safety reckons I need a spotter to get out of my car to avoid getting hit but then when we turn up to do the practical advises us to park on a dry, overgrown vacant block then tells me to shut up and don't be a sook when I challenged him on it. I miss common sense.

How lucky are the teenagers - deny any wrongdoing, nil hard evidence available.

It's a no brainer that red hot exhausts and dry grass cause fire.
Country folk have known this all their lives, has nothing to do with the car being a BMW or a police car for that matter. A Datsun 120Y will do the same thing.

Don't you know safety officers and common sense are mutually exclusive?

Yep you exhaust can glow red hot when you have been right up it, glowing red hot back to the rear of the driver seat and that's on cars without cat converters, but the cats don't cool off as quick.

A recent story I read said that only the Vic police had 2 or 3 of the 200k cars as promos I think. The NSW police get a stripper car which is supplied to them and converted with radios and all for just 100k. As they say, never let the facts.
