Default 3700 motorists beat the fixed M1 speed camera at Loganholme

3700 motorists beat the fixed M1 speed camera at Loganholme and avoid speeding fines

by: Heidi Braithwaite, Logan West Leader
From: Quest Newspapers
February 24, 20121:54PM

More than 3700 speeding drivers have escaped a fine despite being captured by the Loganholme M1 fixed speed camera.

A Right To Information report obtained by the Leader revealed 3756 tickets were not issued between August and October last year because the vehicle or driver could not be identified by the camera.

Of 10 fixed speed/red light cameras across Brisbane, the Loganholme cameras failed identifications outnumbered all others by more than four times, with the next closest on the Gateway Motorway at Nudgee which recorded 438.

Acting Chief Superintendent Dale Pointon said the Loganholme location was selected and went live in August last year after more than 26 speed-related crashes at the site.

It was also revealed last year that 600 motorists were being booked at this location every day, with more than 36,000 drivers detected speeding in just two months.

.

Logan District Traffic Branch Senior Sergeant Scott Lacey said there was a strict adjudication system in place and that if in doubt, drivers did not receive a fine.

He said the fixed speed cameras would continue to complement mobile enforcement programs in the area.

RACQ senior traffic and safety engineer Greg Miszkowycz said he did not consider 3756 a high number of unidentifiable vehicles given the volume of traffic which used the M1 at Loganholme every day.

He said the RACQ supported the use of fixed cameras but that there were certain limitations associated with automated processes.

He said the angle of the camera, its location on an elevated platform and dirty or dented number plates could all make identification difficult.

Mr Miszkowycz said the fine for having an illegible or obscured number plate was currently $320.

Honestly you would have to be a dead set donkey to be caught by this camera anyway.

I am surprised that these cameras are not vandalized more, especially in the remote locations.

sounds like a good enough reason to damage your number plate a bit!

But these ones you can't see sitting on the side of the road. So if you miss the big massive signs, you'll get caught. But then let off

we are very lucky here in QLD
Victorians don't have any warning signs and there are cameras hanging off the back of so many bridges and signs. and they only have a 5kph tolerance(you'll be booked for 3kph over). My two months driving down there I was thankful I have my GPS and up to date Speed cam file. the bloody thing was going off every few klms on some roads

Thousands a day speeding?

Where did they put are all the dead bodies and wrecked cars?

Have they built a crematorium and metal recycle centre next to it to cope with the overload?

Fudged figures too
The camera at Nudgee is set to ping you at atleast 4kph over the 90 limit, mate has a ticket for 94 in 90 zone, 1 point and $133

So not all of a sudden all those people who were doing a few kph over the limit and now counted. That number was a lot higher than the number of people doing 10+ over the limit. So now the Govt can use these figure to blame all these deadly speedsters for the road toll and install more cameras

I'm guessing the Logan camera is also set to a very low tolerance and that is how they are nabbing 600 a day, Yep 104kph is way too fast for a 4 lane straight road and these people are killers. Not the fact that the 4 lanes which are only just coping with the morning traffic load merge into 3 just past this camera and the the traffic comes to s screaming stop as the 3 lanes just can't cope with that number of vehicles.

This was a monumental ******** by the Govt when they upgraded the Pacific to 4 lanes and stopped those 4 lanes just as it came into a heavily populated area. The gateway arterial should have continued around the back of Springwood/Loganholme and merged at the logan motorway merge and bypassed this bottle neck which will remain for at least another 5-10 years. Yep a speed camera is gonna fix it all up
