Red face Oil Reserves

Some BIG Numbers

Between 1859 and 1968, 200 billion barrels (31 km³) of oil were used. In 2005, as prices reach record highs, world consumption is on track to 30 billion barrels per year.

ok and they estimate there is approximatley 1000 billion barrels left if my maths is right , soooo that means we have about 33 years left of oil at its current consumption, we might be able to put diesels in our cars, deisels are far less fussy about the the fuel they burn. will burn peanut oil or other low grade stuff, some clever bugger will work out a way to supply us with a solution.........for a price, wouldn`t it be good if our pollys got off there asses and paid money or a reward for someone too find the replacement fuel instead of waiting for petrol to get too $100 a litre.

Time for our gov to invest or help set up Ethanol production either from Sugar cane or sugar beat? Grants [or tax relief ] to farmers and distillers to produce this stuff.. In competition to oil companies...

A quick read through that article and I found this interesting:

Quote:
The United States has the largest known concentration of oil shale in the world, according to the Bureau of Land Management and holds an estimated 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil — enough to meet U.S. demand for oil at current levels for 110 years. Oil shale is developable given high enough oil prices, and the technology for converting oil shale to oil has been known since the middle ages.

Its funny how people say things like the government should do this and that to get other fuel sources and make it better for us, but why would they? they wouldnt make as big of a profit then would they. So dont count on it.

Why wouldnt they make as big a profit? Their slice comes from taxes, so they could just as easily tax whatever the next fuel is.

Its not just the USA,

Some of us old farts on here remember the oil shocks of the mid 70's. It was at this time us Geologists went out looking for Oil Shale in Aus. It turns out that the other half of Qld that is not made of coal is made of Oil shale.

There are massive reserves of the stuff just north of Gladstone. Lots of people poured money into it, including one of the US oil Giants. They proved the process can work but back then it was not economical, our current prices may well change the economics.

One of the biggest threats to this source of oil is the Conservation Movement as they reckon it is a very dirty industry, hopefully practical reality will force people to tell the Greens where they can stick it.

Ban mining...... Let the Bastards Freeze in the Dark :

cheers

The $$$ stays in this country that's why!!!
Along with heaps of jobs etc...
They'll make on at least tax's or whatever they put on petrol...
If not we'll have non.. I'm old enough to remember back in NZ & here when there was no petrol to buy...That included diesel etc.. Companies had to close down....
I'm not suggesting the Gov payout on this 100%, but at least get things started instead of sitting on "our " money...

Yes I too remember that, when petrol was about 35/40cpl (rough guess) and some black marketeers were asking $200.00 for 200l if there were no higher bidders.
