Ford Edge is replacing the Territory

At first I thought wouldn't the Explorer be a more suitable replacement? But I don't think it makes sense to have the Explorer AND the Everest. The Edge should fit nicely between the Escape/Kuga and the Everest.

Why all the scepticism ?

I'm sure Drive was at the Ford Vision event too and there was no public mention of what would replace Territory, it was one of the things left un-said.

I've always thought it would be a no brainer to replace it with the next gen Edge, though it will probably carry on with the Territory name here in Australia.

It makes no sense to bring the Explorer here, as Everest covers that category much better than the Exploder ever would, making the Edge, the most practical to import.

The Explorer is a full size 4WD, the Territory is an SUV. Different class of vehicle. SUV drivers don't want full size 4WD cars, with diff locks and electric hubs and low range option.

Explorer was available in Australia before Territory was, and it hardly set the world on fire with sales. It would be a bad idea to use it as a replacement for the Territory.

I know SUV is the common term but the Territory is actually a Crossover.

That means it is built on a car platform (Falcon) to have some of the features of a SUV such as higher ride height, plenty of cabin volume in some cases AWD whilst also maintaining the car platform benefits of ride, handling and safety (crumple zones).

The Edge is the comparable US Crossover built on the Taurus platform.

AFAIK the next gen Taurus/Mondeo will merge, and replace Falcon, so it makes sense the vehicle to replace Territory will be the Crossover built off that platform.

I can see this happening but I think some people making comments on the Explorer haven't seen the current one in the states. It is every bit as soft as the Territory and I doubt it would really impact Everest sales compared to Edge. Right now the Edge is only a 5 seater whilst Territory and Explorer are 7 seater and Everest will be too. The next gen Edge though could easily gain that capability too though.

Current gen Edge is based on the CD3 platform, not the D3/Toreass platform. Next gen is said to be on the new CD4 Fusion/Mondeo with a stretch (CD4.1 or 4.2 I think)

I think also the Australian market demands diesel, buyers don't seem to have warmed to the Ecoboost motors in this market so Ford would be stuffing up if they brought the Edge here with no diesel. Given that the next gen Edge is supposed to be available in Europe as well, a diesel should be on the cards.

One other thing - Ford don't have a true medium sized SUV in Australia, the Territory is knocking on the door of the large SUV category because of its size and you can bet the Everest will be firmly in it. Giving Ford a proper medium SUV to take on the likes of the CX7, the Craptiva 5, RAV4 etc etc would fill out the range quite well.

Those SUV's you mentioned, the Captiva and Rav4 etc, are competition for Kuga. The word awhile ago was that next gen Edge was going to be built on the floorpan of next gen Galaxy/S-Max. Unless that's changed I don't think diesel will be an issue.

New Edge will be on CD4.2 which also includes the new SMax, Galaxy and Lincoln MKX.

There will be derivatives of these vehicles for North America, Europe and China, so you can bet Diesel will be available in markets that are embracing Diesel.

No doubt our market will get Diesel.

It does make a bit of sense, but currently theres no 7-seat Edge, there'd need to be one with more rear overhang if its to take Territory's place. Also, look at the styling - if they brought the 2015 Edge here, they won't call it Territory as theres no styling continuity.

One thing that makes no sense to me, is where will they source Territory's successor? USA makes no logistical sense, and they wouldn't have a diesel, Asia probably won't make it and Europe might tool up for Galaxy instead.

And for anyone not quite sure, Edge is around Mazda CX-7 size, which is same length as our Territory.

Although the current one is based on the CX-9 Platform, the next generation should be out this time
next year on the CD4 Platform as stated above, a diesel in this size vehicle would win plenty of buyers over..

We drove 3,000 miles in a FWD V6 Edge back in 2009, beautiful engine - Nothing like Commodore V6.
I could have happily accepted that engine in my new FG Ute back in Australia, torquey and willing to rev...

At one point I think we were going to keep the Escape name, then Ford snuck us the mk1 Kuga at the end of its life.

The E/F scheme does have a lot more structure to it, but there's always going to be something out of place be it Mustang, Mondeo, Territory etc.

Ford will be looking to keep Territory brand fresh in peoples mind if they plan on continuing the nameplate post Australian production, as they have indicated is a possibility.

The Explorer is no longer a 4WD style vehicle like it used to be. It used to be a separate chassis, rwd/awd type, not it's fwd/awd and no longer a separate chassis. But in saying that it's a much bigger vehicle than Territory. I've seen a new Explorer parked next to a Territory in the PD carpark and the Explorer dwarfs the Terry. It would be Landcruiser size.

The exterior detailing is very well done, but the overall proportions are pretty bad. The bonnet is way too short, dash to axle ratio non existent - makes it look a class or two below the Territory.

It would not be too hard to modify the front a little to give it a lead in to the 2015 Edge look.

hardly. will not be noticeable to the untrained eye, and even to the staunch Territory enthusiast, they'd have to really squint.
