I remember seeing these signs at intersections when I was a child. Now they are nowhere to be seen. Has the law changed which no longer allows people to turn left at any time?

I have recently noticed a number of intersections where it used to have these signs ... but no more. Need to be more minful now.
Even left turns where they had their own lane/island away from the lights ... this has changed to a separate set of lights now ... intersection of Wallgrove rd and Great Western Highway springs to mind as a recent change. As mentioned ... no more care by drivers and too many accidents has brought about this change though ... so many people just pull out without judging distance ... or not even looking at all.

We did have them just down the road from where I live at a major intersection, but they have redesigned the intersection so the nice sweeping left turns are at more of a right angle , it is set up more like a give way set up , and when you turn into it it has like a speed lowering squiggle in it............. it sucks .

All the places around here that had them are gone with a traffic light there instead. A dedicated traffic light for the slip lane.

The signs were removed about the same time as the current generation of drivers were diagnosed with CBF taking care and FIT head syndrome.

They have just introduced new signs at some traffic light locations in Brisbane. The sign says turn left on red light. Apparently the with care & give way to the right (who would have a green light) are not required so legally you can't be at fault in the case of an accident. The TV news report showed cars turning left & explained everything except the give way thing. I'll do my best to avoid these intersections until the message is clear that you must still give way to the right.

With the advent of traffic islands, dual carriageways and turn only lanes, the law as it was became very confusing for those souls who were not capable of logical thoughts and safe driving practices.
In the old days, if you were turning left you had right of way over anybody else doing any other kind of turn as you were not regarded as breaking through a line of traffic. However, traffic lights, right turn arrows and the like confused too many so the simple, effective method was generally ditched in favour of the far more complicated 15 different scenarios. |

they still exist, a bit less of them but they are still around
'left turn on red permitted after stopping' is something completely different |
