Default Front wheel drive Commodore

I heard a rumor that in the next 3 years the Commodore will be a FWD and the upmarket Commo's will be All wheel drive. Can anyone confirm the rumor.

If that happns, they'll not only lose sales but they wouldn't be able to export to the US (there used as cop cars). Not a smart move if it's true.

wouldn't that be more expensive for Holden to produce then as they'd have to build and develope two different platforms? one RWD and one FWD. maybe they've got a new Dawoo to use as the Commodore!

Old rumor!

Ford were going to do it prior to AU also!!

I doubt it as Australians love their RWD's!!

I once heard a rumour that Tasmania was built of ivory, this rumour also proved to be unfounded. :

I remember reading about it when there was a "how great is the commodore" article.
The Magna was exported as well.

Holden have lost there export licence to the US because of the monaro deal, they had to sell 18000 of them over to gain an export licence there but the americans hated them and only 3700 were sold thus denying Holden to export to the US.
As for the front wheel drive I have heard numerous rumors like the daewoo running gear being modified to fit under the commodore to make them front wheel drive but I dunno if it will happen and I can almost garuntee that ford will not go there.

Holden will cancel all all-wheel-drive models by middle of 2006. Therefore there will be no AWD offered on VE model. Heard it on LS1 forums.

let me see spend a few hundred million in development of the rwd VE then 3 years later **** it off and bring in a front wheel drive, dont think that will happen. Though I wonder if ford or holden australia become unprofitable and shut down, will they import an overseas car and call it falcon/commodore

edit on spelling

plus that would mean the V8 supercar rules would change to favour holdens, so we would have a Front wheel drive V8 touring cars, me thinks not

Holden export (or used to anyway, dont know if they still do or not) Statesmans and Caprice Models to the UAE and Saudi Arabia where they are used as Cop Vehicles. Badged as Chevys and not a bad deal if youre a cop- V8, leather, climate control etc.

Would be the deathnell of local car manufacturing. Unique relative high powered RWD sedan are the mainstay of local manufacture, take that away and the whole market place would be predominantly Korean imports. Scary thought that.

Would never buy a FWD Falcon or Commo as long as my **** points to the ground. Wouldn't buy an AWD with an east-west engine either.

Sure they might be cheaper, but if only one made RWD wouldn't they make a killing on sales? Or would fleet sales null that?

It was a big mistake for G.M U.S to go fwd as alot of people went Jap..
Big torque engines and fwd don't mix...

thats funny, i would luve to see how ford would fit the I6 east-west and the boss east west too, yea right. They would have to invest in whole new engines and dump the V8s, and this is supposed to save them money how?

who said it had to be the existing engines? An Australian manufactured six or a locally assembled specialist V8, as opposed to a ready to go imported trans-axle engine assembly from the US Europe SA or Asia. You argue with a been counter how it would not be cost effective. They never take into account facts like a massive consumer backlash!

Its unlikely whilst ever Ford and GM Australia have some say, but wouldn't be the first dumb move either company has had thrust upon it from the US.

Ford have been thinking of a FWD Falcon since the late 70s, the Telstar could have actually been a Falcon! Also the late 80s model Probe/MX6 was very close to becoming the Mustang!
