Default Canary !!!

Hello ladies and...gentlenoobz (j/k) :P

I am wondering if anyone knows much about canaries....

I am buy'n a E.T Pulsar(nissan, duh) and it got canaried for bold tyres..... now the guy at vicroads told me that if it has suspended reg(cause of canary!) it cannot get a wreck reg...yeah reasonable that means I can still drive it to get it fixed....

When it gets de-regged and if the canary hasn't cleared then I cannot get a wreck reg (after it gets de-regged!) - that's what I read on the vicroads... cause it obviously isn't safe to drive... I ask the guy at vicroads about it and he said something about wreck reg and motorcycle-like WTF?

Quote from the Vicroads website:

Quote:
The permit does not allow:

1. A vehicle to be used between the hours of 7:00 pm and 7:00 am., except in the following circumstances -

where a vehicle is collected from the place of purchase to be driven to the residence of the owner or the garaged address nominated on the permit; or

single trip journeys where specified on the permit form;

2. A vehicle to be used to collect parts.

An unregistered vehicle permit is not a temporary registration. The vehicle must be safe for use on the road and used within the conditions of the permit.

An unregistered vehicle permit cannot be issued if:

the vehicle is currently under suspension
the vehicle is currently registered
there is an uncleared defect notice on the vehicle
Ok, the reg is suspended - but will be officially unregistered by JAN 20th....

What do I do.... once the reg runs out and I don't get canary fixed.... and it gets deregged offically... and then I can't clear the canary by applying for a wreck reg cause it was deregged without the cary being cleared.....

So, I will have to clear the CANARY by putting the car on a TANDOM trailor and taking it to a mechanic??? or can't it be cleared EVER :(???

any advice/help much appreciated.... Thanks.

Edit: The canary notice was removed and binned before I baught the car...

You could either put the car on a trailer as you have suggested or fix it at home and drive it directly to the inspection station to get the canary cleared. If you fix it at home I would make sure that you have some evidence that you have repaired the defective items. If it's just tyres pull the wheels off and take them to the tyre place to get them fitted.

lol, well atleast I understand...well I think I do....

Ok, the car is registered, but the registration is suspended either because the canary didn't get cleared in time or because the registration wasn't re-newed.... anyways, the deadline for the car to be officially unregistered is JAN 20th 06....

It currently has a canary that yellow sticker or whatever - because of bold tyres.

I am buying the car, but by the time I am able to get new tyres the registration will run out. Now because I cannot clear the canary before the registration ends that mean's the car will have a defect that wasn't cleared before the registration ends(which on the vicroads website states, that if a canary isn't cleared before a car is officially unregistered - I cannot get a wreck reg, which interm makes it hard to get it to places unless I put it on a tandom trailor or drive illegally...) - all what was just said is how I see it but may not be correct!!!

that's alright, from now i'll be saying what I think is right, get the car roadworthy again, take it to the joint that declares the car roadworthy and then re-register it again...

Do ya understand now.. lol long post but that's life =)

There are several variables here.
A minor defect notice issued to a vehicle has 7 days to get the problem fixed before the car cannot be driven on the road legally. Then after a further 28 days, if the defect notice isnt cleared the vehicles registration may be cancelled. A major defect notice can be as above but it may also put a prohibition on the vehcile straight away. Ie you must trailor the vehicle from where the police issued the defect notice to it.
There is no such thing in Vic as wreck reg. What you are referring to is an Unregistered vehicle permit.

You cannot be issued with an Unregistered Vehicel Permit on a vehicle that hasnt had a Defect notice cleared.

What you will have to do is trailor the vehicle to a mechanic and get him to issue the vehicle with a roadworthy certificate. Take both the vehicle and the roadworthy certificate with you to Vic roads along with whatever else (transfer papers etc)and your on your way wihout a worry.

Now that will be 5 bux please.

HRT8,

That is the most well-informed and accurate post that I've seen for a long time. I applaud you! Also, I would have charged $10 for that advice, so not only are you wise, but you charge reasonable rates.

There is so much bull**** that circulates in response to questions like these I think its great to see a correct answer for once.

Also xespac, how bold are your tyres? Are they bold enough to walk up to a policeman and yell at him? 'Cos that's pretty bold. Do they start fights when they're heavily outnumbered? That's pretty bold too

The beauty of it all is once rego is cancelled the canary no longer stands. As you can't canary a unreg'd car. I've been in that exact situation.

It's far easier to start from scratch than it is the buggerise round with a canary. Honestly though who can't get a car r/w when it needs tyres? That's silly.

Depends whether the canary is a minor or major. Major = lots more hassle as the r/w centre/workshop may pick thousands of $ of other parts. If it's a minor no r/w centre/workshop needs to be consulted.

Unreg'd cars can easily get a permit but for recreation is it worth the hassle? Trailor is far simpler although may cost more in the end.

The defect notice is still recorded against a vehicles VIN and Regos numbers. If your not planning on driving it on the road then it wont matter. But try to get an unregistered vehicle permit or obtain registration. Good Luck.

Actually you CAN defect an unregistered vehicle. It prevents the car from being re-registered and from obtaining a permit.
This is done on vehicles which are a real safety issue and should not be anywhere near a road.

Both require you to get a RWC so how can it be easier??
