well its up to you...but frankly you are nuts to not go with the e series ones.

they are pretty cheap anyway...you can get a set of 4 with tyres for like $800 or so last time I checked.

Wheels Direct Is probably the only place on Ebay worth dealing with for wheels.

i have heard that yes SPACERS are illegal but HUB ADAPTORS arent because they bolt to the actual brake hub and then another set of bolts come off that......i used them on my old xr6....on my current car i have AU xr82 rims that big o tyres had in stock with e series offset they were cheap about 3 years ago so they would be almost free today surely

they're both ilegal....... the adapters are safe to use though.....spacers put full load on the studs which over time snaps the studs.....
but as you say the adapters bolt to the hub, then the wheel bolts to the adapter........

Problem 1:- Hub Adapters

Hub adapters bolt to your hub then they have wheel studs fitted to them that you bolt you rims to.

The issue with the hub adapters is that you can check your wheel nuts easy and you know if a nut comes loose but to check the hub adapter nuts you have to remove the entire riml off

With regards to AU XR Rims for pre au do a search on the trading post online australia wide and you vould be pleasently suprised how much they are. Its a stupid internet program to search for stuff on trading post online.

Lets say you can get a full set of original AU XR for cheap - to that you have to add $250 or so for hub adapters THEN you have the NO INSURANCE clause if you have an accident an the insurance company fidns oiut that hub adapeter have been fitted or even spacers :

Do you really think being a cheap *** is worth it in the long run??? it:

What will you be saving $100 or something?!?!

^^thats a good decision!

Im pretty sure T_terror or someone else (perhaps sundeep) made a comment about the hub adaptor studs breaking anyway.

The law varies state to state in regard to hub adaptors and like most laws its a bit sketchy on the details.
But if the hub adaptors failed and resulted in your car crashing, then dont expect any favours from insurance companies.

I'll refer him to the thread...
I do believe T_Terror snapped at least one axle (only 25spline) with some spirited driving whilst the adapters stayed intact.

i was worrying about all this when i got me car. so i decided to just stick with me 5 spoke 15' alloys until i win the lotto, and copy heaps of wheels in the e series offset.

but seeing as that aint going to happen anytime soon i might just have to get a set made!

Someone should make a sticky on this topic.

Short answer:

hub adapters are fine, people who say they break dont know what theyre talking about.

Dont use spacers.

Correct offset is the best option. Having said that Eseries has NOTHING for wheel choice so spacers shouldnt be dismissed. I would say they are about 90-95% as good as having correct offset wheels.

PS. Yeah, i broke an axle and punihed those spacers but the lived. If you break studs you can just replace them easy. Or get stronger ones.

whilst i do agree, and i would have every trust in them, the law does state they're not legal, (which i could live with) but i just cant risk voiding insurance at the time of a claim... i might as well just cancel my insurance policy now....its the same risk...

the seccond there is some kind of regulation in these adapters that make them legal.(and thus insurance friendly)........ i will have a set and some decent rims
