All-new Focus introduces an array of smart driver assistance technologies to Ford's next-generation small car
Advanced features to help drivers cope with the pressures of modern motoring
Focus with Active Park Assist provides convenient solutions for every-day challenges such as choosing a parking spot, calculating appropriate trajectory angle and vehicle positioning

MELBOURNE, Australia, 01 June, 2011

A substantial technology investment for the all-new Focus brings a new level of smart driver assistance features to Ford's small car range, offering customers an exciting array of advanced technologies generally found only in larger and more expensive vehicles.

These driver assistance features provide Focus customers with the ability to cope more easily with the pressures of modern motoring, giving them convenient new ways to deal with every-day challenges like parallel parking, driving safely on busy freeways and tackling the cut-and-thrust of city driving.

“Congested modern roads place extra pressure on the driver,” said Gunnar Herrmann, Ford’s Global C-Car Vehicle Line Director. “The all-new Focus gives customers an exciting range of smart new features that help to reduce driving stress, while improving safety and comfort behind the wheel.”

Painless parallel parking
The all-new Focus is available with Ford Active Park Assist, an advanced new system which automatically steers the vehicle into parallel parking spaces.

The system uses two ultrasonic sensors (one on each side of the vehicle) to scan for large enough gaps between parked cars – these gaps can be just 20 per cent longer than the overall vehicle length.

Once a suitable gap has been identified, the driver is informed and clear parking instructions are shown in the centre console display using simple text and graphics. The driver controls the accelerator and brake, and selects a forward or reverse gear, while the system turns the steering wheel completely automatically. The parking manoeuvres can be carried out at speeds of up to 10 km/h.

The front and rear parking sensors provide the usual audible warning to help the driver judge when the car is getting close to the surrounding vehicles. To assist accurate parking in tight spots, the system continues with multiple moves backwards and forwards until the vehicle is parked perfectly.

Active Park Assist will be fitted as standard equipment on the new high-series Titanium model, in both hatch and sedan bodystyles.

Comfortable freeway driving with Adaptive Cruise Control
For reduced stress when driving on freeways, the all-new Focus features an improved, radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control system, which helps to maintain a comfortable distance to other vehicles.

If the system detects that the vehicle in front is slowing down or is too close, it decelerates automatically to maintain the preset distance. Once the road is clear again, it will then accelerate back to the chosen cruising speed.

The system also incorporates a Forward Alert feature, which is designed to warn the driver via the cluster display and through a chime if there is a risk of a collision with the vehicle in front.

The system pre-charges the brakes to enable a quicker response when the driver presses the brake pedal, and in case of an imminent collision, it can automatically apply the brakes (with decelerations up to 3 m/s²) to reduce impact speed.

Adaptive Cruise Control will be available on the new high-series Titanium model, as part of an optional Sports Executive Pack, which also includes Bi-Xenon HID headlights with integrated static cornering lights and a power tilt/slide sunroof.

Speed Limiter helps avoid unintentional speeding
The Ford Adjustable Speed Limiting Device (ASLD) allows drivers to set their own personal speed limit, so that in demanding conditions – such as in unfamiliar city streets, or passing through extended roadworks on the freeway – they can concentrate on the road ahead without the worry of unintentionally driving too fast. This supports safer, less stressful driving, and reduces the chance of receiving unwanted speeding tickets.

By using enhanced Cruise Control switches on the steering wheel, the driver can adjust and set their personal top speed, for speeds above 30 km/h. When the vehicle reaches the pre-set speed, the engine management system intervenes to prevent further acceleration.

If required, the driver can override their chosen limit – to overtake, for example – by pressing hard on the accelerator. Once the vehicle speed drops back under the chosen speed limit, the system automatically re-activates again.

Cruise control with ASLD will be fitted as standard equipment on all mid- and high-series Focus models – Trend, Sport and Titanium.

All-new Ford Focus available with a new 2.0-litre GDi Ti-VCT engine
Next-generation petrol engine combines fun-to-drive performance with excellent fuel economy and CO2 emissions
Advanced engine technologies raise efficiency to new levels
New Focus fuel efficiency improved by employing an advanced six-speed dual dry-clutch PowerShift automatic transmission

MELBOURNE, Australia, 01 June, 2011

The petrol engine range in the all-new Focus is led by a new 2.0-litre GDi direct injection four-cylinder powerplant, which is the most powerful and the most fuel efficient normally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engine in the small car class.

The new 2.0-litre GDi engine is one of the first on the market to combine the technology of gasoline direct injection (GDi) with twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT).

The combination of these technologies helps make the dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) Focus four-cylinder one of the most powerful, fuel-efficient and refined engines in its class and one of the most advanced non-turbocharged four-cylinder engines Ford has ever offered.

It produces 125 kW of power at 6600 rpm and 202 Nm of peak torque at 4450 rpm, up from 107 kW and 185 Nm in the previous-generation Focus, which represents a 17 per cent increase in maximum power and a nine per cent increase in peak torque.

Direct injection improves fuel economy and performance by delivering the precise amount of fuel right into the combustion chamber.

The advanced fuel injection system works in concert with Ti-VCT, which adjusts the valve timing for optimum performance, helping the 2.0-litre GDi engine deliver a best ADR 81/02 combined cycle fuel consumption result of just 6.6 L/100km on PowerShift automatic transmission-equipped Trend and Sport models.

The direct injection 2.0-litre GDi engine serves as another example of Ford delivering significant fuel economy improvements through the use of advanced technologies, while still producing surprising power from minimal displacement.

The engine can deliver outstanding fuel economy and emissions, along with the throttle response, performance and flexibility expected from a world-class engine.

“By combining direct injection and Ti-VCT, we’ve been able to make a quantum leap in fuel economy and performance,” said Derrick Kuzak, Group Vice President, Global Product Development. “We’re meeting the goals of our global powertrain strategy, and we now have another key engine in our line-up.”

The 2.0-litre GDi engine is manufactured in Michigan, at Ford’s Dearborn Engine Plant.

Core engine technologies
As a DOHC design, the 2.0-litre GDi engine uses two camshafts – one to open the intake valves and one to open the exhaust valves.

Traditionally, camshafts have only been able to open the valves at a fixed point, defined during engine design and manufacture. Now, with modern variable cam timing (VCT) systems, the camshafts can be rotated slightly relative to their initial position, allowing the cam timing to be advanced or retarded.

Ti-VCT takes this technology and applies it to both the intake and exhaust camshafts of its DOHC design, using electronic solenoid valves that direct high-pressure oil to control vanes in each of the camshaft sprocket housings.

By using one oil control solenoid per camshaft, controlled by the electronic control module, each intake and exhaust camshaft can be advanced or retarded independently from the other as engine operating conditions change, providing an exceptional degree of valve timing control.

“The overlap control via Ti-VCT helps us eliminate compromises in the induction and exhaust systems,” said Jamie Hanshaw, VCT Technical Specialist. “Drivers will notice improved low-end power and better fuel economy. And there are benefits they won’t notice too, like reduced emissions overall, especially at part-throttle.”

Fuel metering duties on the 2.0-litre engine are handled by an injection system that precisely delivers a fine mist of fuel directly into each cylinder for optimal performance, economy and emissions. Unlike port fuel-injection (PFI) engines that spray fuel into the intake system, the direct injection system puts the fuel in the combustion chamber, exactly where it needs to be for combustion.

With gasoline direct injection the engine can safely operate at a high 12:1 compression ratio, further enhancing power and efficiency.

The high-pressure fuel injectors are positioned to the side of each cylinder, aiming the fuel directly into the cylinder adjacent to a high-intensity spark plug and alongside the intake and exhaust valves. Fuel is sprayed into the cylinders at pressures of up to 2150 psi, which is about 35 times more intense than PFI injection.

“The GDi system creates an incredibly fine spray of fuel that’s injected directly into the combustion chamber at the precise moment it’s needed, eliminating a lot of the compromises of traditional fuel systems,” explains Scott Makowski, four-cylinder engine manager.

“It sounds simple, but months of testing and computer simulation went into finding the exact injector spray pattern, where to aim the spray and even the piston dome design.”

The Denso high-pressure fuel injectors use internal solenoids to precisely switch the flow of fuel on and off. Fuel flows through six tiny outlets – like pinholes – in each injector, and each spray is positioned to provide benefits in fuel economy and emissions.

A sophisticated electronic control system varies the timing and intensity of the fuel delivery according to engine operating conditions.

Attention to detail yields fuel economy improvements
Complementing the efficiencies introduced by Ti-VCT and GDi, every aspect of the proven 2.0-litre I4 engine was examined to identify ways fuel economy could be improved. Key strategies focused on reducing internal engine friction and overall weight.

Computer modelling indicated areas where friction reduction strategies would be most beneficial. The valvetrain received a fine surface treatment to present the smoothest surface possible. Piston skirts are treated with a special low-friction coating, and the oil pump and its drive ratio are sized for the exact capacity requirements of the new 2.0-litre engine.

Accessory drive friction was also reduced through a series of actions. Electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) eliminates the drag of an engine-driven power steering pump, while the use of “stretchy belt” technology removes friction from the belt tensioner on the air conditioning compressor drive system.

Additionally, an overriding alternator de-coupler – essentially a special pulley that reduces certain types of vibrations – allows the alternator and water pump drive belt to operate at a much lower tension than is typically used, further reducing frictional losses.

To keep overall powertrain weight as low as possible, the block, cylinder head and oil pan – traditionally the heaviest engine components – are aluminium castings. To increase rigidity, these elements are ribbed for additional strength and durability.

Pistons are cast aluminium as well, with the light weight helping to reduce reciprocating mass.

Composite material is employed to keep intake manifold weight to an absolute minimum, while allowing for induction routing to increase thermal efficiency and improve low-end torque characteristics.

Advanced six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission
Fuel economy on the 2.0-litre GDi engine is enhanced by the availability of a new, high efficiency six-speed dual dry-clutch PowerShift automatic transmission, which is one of Ford's most advanced transmission units.

Focus customers have the option of specifying the PowerShift automatic on Trend and Sport models with the 2.0-litre GDi engine, while it is fitted as standard equipment on the high-series Titanium model.

The DPS6 PowerShift unit is also the automatic transmission option on Ambiente models powered by the 1.6-litre Duratec engine.

This advanced transmission combines the efficiency, optimised gear ratios and responsive performance of a traditional manual transmission with the smoothness, convenience and ease-of-use of a conventional automatic.

Low-friction dry clutches are employed, combined with six well-spaced gears to provide responsive acceleration from rest, smooth transitions between gears and optimised fuel economy when cruising.

This transmission is significantly more efficient than traditional torque converter automatics, resulting in fuel economy and CO2 emission levels which are very close to, and in some cases even exceed, those achieved with a manual transmission.

Fuel-Saving Technologies Help All-New Ford Focus Deliver Cleaner, More Sustainable Performance

Innovative technologies such as Eco Mode and Shift Indicator to assist the driver of the all-new Focus to be more environmentally conscious and achieve lower fuel consumption
Other Ford technologies including EPAS, aggressive deceleration fuel shut-off and smart battery management, help to improve fuel economy
Additional technologies to enhance efficiency include gasoline direct injection (GDi) and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT)

To deliver more sustainable performance, the all-new Focus range incorporates a wide range of features and advanced vehicle and powertrain technologies that have been designed to minimise overall emissions and improve fuel economy.

“The steps we have taken to increase fuel economy represent significant steps forward in reducing the environmental impact of our products and enabling our customers to make a more sustainable vehicle choice,” said Gunnar Herrmann, Ford’s Global C-Car Vehicle Line Director.

Ford Eco Mode and Shift Indicator help improve driving style
Ford Eco Mode1 is a new driver information system, first introduced on the previous generation Focus ECOnetic model, which helps motorists to change their habits and adopt a more economical driving style.

The driver has a huge impact on fuel economy, and many motorists could cut their fuel bills by around 10 per cent, or more, by adopting a more environmentally responsible driving style.

Sophisticated software – developed with the help of specialist "eco" driving tutors – monitors driving behaviour and provides the driver with clear feedback about their eco-driving performance, along with simple tips about how to save more fuel.

A simple flower graphic in the instrument cluster display allows drivers to track their progress in the three key areas of gear shifting, anticipation and speed. The system also monitors the number of inefficient short trips made with a cold engine and gives credit for cutting the proportion of shorter journeys.

The Shift Indicator can also be a major support in manual-transmission Focus models for drivers prioritising economy. An indicator light, which is displayed in the instrument cluster, alerts drivers when they could reduce fuel consumption by shifting into a higher gear.

Ford technologies optimise efficiency
Other Ford fuel-saving technologies available in the all-new Focus include:

Smart regenerative charging battery management
Twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT)
PowerShift six-speed dual dry-clutch automatic transmission
Aggressive deceleration fuel shut-off
Low-friction engine and transmission oils
Low tension Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) belt
Thermal management systems to optimise warm-up
Low rolling resistance tyres

Most new Focus models also features Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) as standard, which reduces CO2 emissions by approximately three per cent compared to a traditional hydraulic steering system.

1 Eco Mode only available on Sport and Titanium models

New Focus Delivers Improved Aerodynamic Performance For Fuel Economy And Lower CO2

Improved Focus aerodynamics helps to reduce drag, cutting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
Streamlined new shape reduces drag coefficient by up to 10 per cent, compared to previous Focus models
Optimised aerodynamic details have significantly enhanced overall aerodynamic performance, with a low drag coefficient on sedan of CD = 0.274

The all-new Ford Focus achieves significantly improved aerodynamic performance, cutting drag by up to 10 per cent to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

After spending nearly 1000 hours in the wind tunnel, the new Focus has an impressively streamlined shape, and is one of the most aerodynamic vehicles Ford has ever produced.

The reduction in drag was achieved through detailed optimisation of every aspect of the vehicle design to enhance its aerodynamic performance.

Streamlined shape reduces drag
With its lower roofline and sleek, dynamic profile, the all-new Focus has an inherently streamlined shape. Compared to the outgoing model, it also has a notably ‘faster’ windscreen angle, which adds to its aerodynamic advantage.

With careful optimisation of aerodynamic details, it was possible to achieve a significant reduction in drag compared to the previous Focus:

Four-door sedan – CD = 0.274 (was 0.304), reduced by 10 per cent
Five-door hatch – CD = 0.295 (was 0.318), reduced by 7 per cent

The optimisation work was carried out by a combination of wind tunnel testing and analysis using extremely powerful Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation tools.

“Improving aerodynamics is a key way to help reduce vehicle CO2 emissions,” said Helmut Reder, Focus Chief Programme Engineer. “Extensive analysis and optimization has enabled us to achieve a major cut in drag on the all-new Focus.”

Detailed features enhance aerodynamics and stability
Aerodynamic performance was enhanced by detailed optimisation in all areas of the vehicle. To prevent unwanted drag, the front end is completely sealed using a hood seal and shielding beneath the engine, so that air is ducted efficiently via the grille to the cooling pack.

Airflow beneath the car is managed by tailored panels on the underbody, with a lower front deflector and speed lip, engine undershield and optimised front wheel deflectors.

On the sides of the vehicle, an optimised mirror design reduces drag, while also minimising wind noise and managing the flow of rainwater along the side glass. The shape of the A-pillar was carefully optimised, and incorporates a special moulding to further reduce drag and minimise wind noise.

At the rear, airflow under the vehicle is managed by a diffuser integrated with the bumper moulding, while an additional undershield contributes further drag reduction. Integrated rear spoilers help to minimise drag and enhance stability, while subtle features added to the sides of the rear lamp mouldings provide a sharp edge that allows the airflow to separate from the body sides in exactly the right place.

All-New Ford Focus Is Designed For Sustainability

Comprehensive approach to ensure the all-new Focus represents an improvement in environmental performance
Ford’s ground-breaking Product Sustainability Index used by engineers to measure progress in improving environmental performance
Key sustainability initiatives on all-new Focus include expanded use of renewable and recycled materials, and elimination of potential allergens

Maximising sustainability was a primary goal for the all-new Ford Focus, with a comprehensive approach to improving the vehicle’s environmental performance.

In addition to the major efforts in minimising CO2 emissions through high-efficiency powertrains, weight saving and improved aerodynamics, a wide variety of other factors were considered to ensure that the all-new Focus represents a more sustainable vehicle choice.

This holistic approach addressed the entire vehicle life cycle and included measures that ranged from maximising the use of recycled and renewable materials, to avoiding any potential allergenic substances from the cabin.

Design for sustainability
The progress in improving sustainability for the all-new Focus was monitored using Ford's ground-breaking Product Sustainability Index (PSI). This index represents the automotive industry's most comprehensive approach yet in assessing the environmental, societal and economic impact of vehicles, and demonstrates Ford's commitment to taking a leading role in addressing these issues.

“The Product Sustainability Index gives us a very clear view of the sustainability of our vehicles,” said Gunnar Herrmann, Ford’s Global C-Car Vehicle Line Director.

“As we develop a new model, we can use the index to ensure that every aspect of the product is as sustainable as possible.”

Ford's PSI tracks eight product attributes identified as key sustainability elements of a vehicle:

Life cycle global warming potential (mainly CO2 emissions)
Life cycle air quality potential (other air emissions)
The use of sustainable materials (recycled and renewable materials)
Substance management (including elimination of potential allergens)
Exterior noise impact (drive-by noise)
Safety (for occupants and pedestrians)
Mobility capability (seat and luggage capacity relative to vehicle size)
Life cycle ownership costs (full costs for the customer over the first three years)

These metrics reflect the multi-dimensional nature of sustainability and illustrate the breadth of Ford’s holistic approach. During product development, the index allows new models to be compared to their predecessors, to confirm that sustainability performance is improved. This approach has helped to ensure the all-new Focus provides a more sustainable choice than previous models.

Eliminating potentially harmful materials
For more than 20 years, Ford's Restricted Substance Management Standard has defined what materials to avoid or eliminate in Ford products, and in the parts and materials provided by suppliers.

To manage materials across the vehicle life cycle, Ford has developed a Global Materials Management process. This helps Ford communicate materials requirements to suppliers, as well as track the materials used in the parts they produce.

Use of recycled and renewable materials
As a key part of the sustainability program, Ford has implemented stringent internal requirements to increase the use of recycled and renewable materials within its products. Ford’s material engineers have developed components from recycled material while ensuring no compromise to quality, durability or performance, and Ford expects its global suppliers to use sustainable materials whenever feasible, provided these materials are environmentally favourable in the specific application.

The all-new Focus features a range of parts produced using recycled content. These include sound insulation material manufactured from recycled denim jeans and cotton fibres, as well as carpets featuring recycled plastic content – plus a number of plastic components produced from a variety of consumer and industrial waste materials, including the battery housing, cover and baseplate, wheel arch liners, and heating/ventilation unit.

Default Re: Ford reveals all new Focus for Australia

All-new Focus is engineered to exceed global safety standards
More advanced high-strength steel than any previous Ford – over 55 per cent of the structure is made from high-strength and ultra high-strength steels
Unique ‘tailor rolled’ B-pillar design with varied thickness for optimum strength

MELBOURNE, Australia, 01 June, 2011

The all-new Ford Focus has an exceptionally strong, stiff and light steel body shell, which has been engineered to exceed global safety standards.

The body structure, which has been rigorously optimised using state-of-the-art computer simulation tools, makes use of advanced high-strength steels and innovative fabrication technique to minimise body weight while delivering enhanced crash performance, improved vehicle dynamics and superior refinement.

“The new Focus uses more high-strength steels than any previous Ford,” said Helmut Reder, Focus Chief Programme Engineer.

“These advanced materials help us cut fuel consumption by reducing weight, while still improving the strength and stiffness we need for vehicle safety and dynamics.

“Innovations like the ‘tailor rolled’ B-pillar design have enabled us to raise the strength and efficiency of the structure to a new level.”

High-strength steels enhance structural performance
Advanced high-strength steels are used extensively in the next-generation Focus body shell.

High-strength steels comprise more than 55 per cent of the body shell, and more than 26 per cent of the vehicle’s structure is formed from ultra high-strength and Boron steels – significantly more than any other Ford product.

On average, the yield strength of the steel in the body is 47 per cent higher than the current generation Focus. The structural integrity of the body shell is also reflected in its torsional rigidity: the new five-door Focus hatch is 15 per cent stiffer than the current model.

To further enhance dynamics and refinement, engineers put special attention on increasing the local stiffness of the structure at the suspension mounting points. In these areas, the body stiffness has increased by as much as 75 per cent.

Innovative B-pillar design increases strength, cuts weight
The advanced design of the Focus body structure can be illustrated by the B-pillar reinforcement, a key structural part which is made from ultra high-strength Boron steel that has been produced using an innovative ‘tailor rolling’ process.

The process allows the thickness of the steel sheet to be varied along its length, so that the part has increased strength in the areas that are subjected to the greatest loads.

The tailor rolled B-pillar in the all-new Focus has eight different gauges, ranging from 1.35 mm to 2.7 mm, and in addition to optimising side impact crash performance, the new design saves 1.4 kg in weight per vehicle.

Optimised safety structure
Other key design features on the Focus body structure include:

Ultra high-strength Boron steel used in the A-pillars, B-pillars, rocker panels and door reinforcement beams to create an extremely rigid passenger cell that minimises deformation in a crash – including side, side pole and roof crush impacts
Integrated door opening reinforcement ring and door load paths produced from high-strength steel to resist side intrusion and maintain structural integrity
High-strength steel front crash structure to efficiently manage high crash forces and maintain good crush behaviour, transferring loads in a controlled way to the body side structure via three load paths in the A-pillar, the rockers and the door waist rails
Very high-strength dual-phase steel used in front crash structure, inner rocker panels and floor cross members for maximum crash energy absorption, and to maintain integrity of the passenger cell
Front chassis subframe that is designed to de-couple from the lower body attachment point during a frontal crash event. By reducing the loading, this patented de-coupling system avoids deformation in the passenger cell footwell area.

All-New Ford Focus Safety Systems Meet Toughest Global Standards

Expanded safety testing for the all-new Focus, including more than 12,000 virtual and real-world crash tests globally
Enhanced Ford Intelligent Protection System in the all-new Focus engineered to exceed global safety standards
Body structure and restraint systems subjected to comprehensive testing to prove new safety technologies designed to protect occupants in crashes
Advanced restraint systems with innovative next-generation airbag design

The all-new Ford Focus features the latest enhanced Ford Intelligent Protection System (IPS) which integrates next-generation restraint system technologies with an optimised high-strength body structure.

To ensure that the Focus exceeds the toughest global safety standards, it has been subjected to a comprehensive testing and development program comprising more than 12,000 virtual and real world crash tests, including 80 vehicle crash tests and 2,500 full vehicle CAE simulations.

Designed to achieve the highest safety performance in its segment, the all-new Focus IPS has been developed as a closely integrated system, so that the body structure absorbs energy highly effectively during a crash and works closely in conjunction with the vehicle’s restraint systems to protect the occupants.

“The safety systems in the all-new Focus have been through an incredibly intensive development program,” said Gunnar Herrmann, Ford’s Global C-Car Vehicle Line Director. “Engineering the Focus to meet the most stringent global safety standards has resulted in a stronger, safer vehicle, delivering benefits to consumers all around the world.”

“The all-new Focus also features innovations like the next-generation front airbags, offering enhanced protection with reduced risk of injuries,” he added.

Enhanced restraint system with next-generation driver’s airbag design
The enhanced Ford IPS restraint system in the Focus includes individual single stage front airbags and 3D side thorax airbags for the driver and front passenger, along with standard side curtain airbags for the first and second row seats.

The driver’s front airbag is an innovative next-generation design that features enhanced chest protection technology designed to help reduce driver chest and rib injuries.

This next-generation airbag technology is designed to provide enhanced chest protection through the use of a reconfigured curved-shaped tether, which pulls in the lower section of the airbag to help lessen the impact of the airbag on the driver’s chest and ribs. The feature is expected to be particularly beneficial for older, more injury-prone drivers.

Introduced for the first time in the all-new Focus, the tethering technology in the airbag will roll out to many other Ford vehicles in the coming years.

The front passenger airbag design is also enhanced, featuring adaptive venting technology that reduces the risk of injury by diverting some of the gas from the airbag through a side vent during the crash event. The restraint control module – the control centre of Ford's advanced safety systems – adjusts the level of venting based on seat position.

This new passenger airbag is designed to enhance head and neck protection by better matching deployment force with occupant size. This innovative system uses a small pyrotechnic device to force open the vent and can provide less pressure in the airbag when it's sufficient to help protect the occupant.

The new Focus is the first Ford vehicle to feature front passenger airbags with adaptive venting technology.

Meanwhile, side airbags on the all-new Focus feature unique shoulder vents that stay open and reduce pressure for smaller occupants who typically benefit from reduced forces. Taller occupants, whose shoulders block the vent, could benefit from the higher pressures.

Optimised interior safety features
The restraint system in Focus is complemented by other optimised interior safety features. Ford’s horizontal stroking steering column helps to reduce loads on the occupant’s head and chest by stroking away from the driver in the event of a high speed frontal impact.

This is combined with a revised instrument panel design that provides optimised compliance, helping to protect the occupants’ legs if they contact the instrument panel during a crash.

The front seats are fitted with more effective retractor pretensioners, providing increased retraction travel, along with belt load limiters.

All-New Ford Focus – Enhanced Safety Inside And Outside

Comprehensive approach to occupant and pedestrian safety
Front end design engineered to provide optimised pedestrian protection
Protection from allergies thanks to unique development and certification approach

Enhanced safety for the all-new Ford Focus goes beyond superior crash performance and embraces a comprehensive approach to occupant and pedestrian safety.

This commitment to the wellbeing of passengers and pedestrians extends to measures to protect children in the vehicle, a unique approach to eliminating potentially allergenic materials from the interior, and a range of features to improve pedestrian safety.

“Optimising the body structure and the restraint systems is just one part of vehicle safety,” said Helmut Reder, Focus Chief Programme Engineer. “We have gone to great lengths to ensure that the all-new Focus is as safe as possible, not only for passengers of all ages riding in the vehicle but for pedestrians too.”

Optimised pedestrian protection
The front-end design on the all-new Focus has also been carefully engineered to provide optimised pedestrian protection.

Pedestrian protection was a key consideration in the detailed design of all elements of the front-end, particularly in the design of the bumper and bonnet, the front structure, and the layout of the engine compartment.

A notable feature introduced specifically to improve pedestrian protection is a new dual motor windscreen wiper system, which allows the main elements of the motors and wiper mechanism to be moved to a safer position away from the centre of the vehicle.

The body structure also incorporates a new ‘soft’ cowl design, which has been carefully engineered to reduce the effect of impacts at the base of the windscreen.

Allergy tested interior
To safeguard the health and wellbeing of all occupants, the all-new Focus is the latest Ford product to have been developed with a special attention to optimising interior air quality and eliminating any allergenic materials.

Since 2004, a succession of Ford vehicles have been awarded the "Allergy Tested Interior" seal of approval by world-renowned independent test house, TÜV Rheinland, based in Cologne, Germany, and it is expected that the all-new Ford Focus will receive the same certification.

Default Re: Ford reveals all new Focus for Australia

The all-new Ford Focus has earned a maximum five-star crash safety rating in the latest European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP), including the highest possible dynamic score for child protection in both frontal and side impact collision tests.

Focus also excelled in the adult and pedestrian safety categories.

Euro NCAP’s five-star safety award for new Focus confirms the structural excellence of Ford’s global C-Car platform. The Ford C-MAX and Grand C-MAX available in Europe share the same architecture as the new Focus and were both awarded five stars by Euro NCAP last year.

The all-new Focus, which goes on sale in Australia in August, is engineered to meet or exceed safety standards around the world and has been crash-tested more than 12,000 times in real and virtual worlds to ensure the best possible protection for occupants of various ages and sizes.

"We were committed from the beginning with the all-new Focus to design and engineer a vehicle that leads the way both in terms of technology and safety," said Gunnar Herrmann, Global C-Car Vehicle Line Director.

"The inherent strength of our new Focus is the structural rigidity of the body and our extensive use of high-strength steels."

Fifty-five per cent of the body shell is made of high-strength steels, of which 31 per cent is ultra-tough boron steel, more than any other Ford built to date. Boron features in the A-pillars, B-pillars, rocker panels and door reinforcement beams to create an extremely rigid, crush-resistant passenger cell.

Meanwhile, high-strength steel is used in the integrated door opening reinforcement rings and door load paths to provide excellent protection from side impacts.

New Focus also features a patented front chassis subframe, which de-couples during severe frontal impacts, avoiding deformation in the passenger cell footwell area. Pedestrian protection has been boosted by the addition of a "soft" cowl design in the front body structure and Ford has also relocated the windscreen wiper system to help further reduce injury risks.

Intelligent Protection
New Focus is equipped with Ford's Intelligent Protection System restraint system that includes next-generation front airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as unique side airbags complete with shoulder vents that stay open and reduce pressure for smaller occupants.

A 'horizontal stroking' steering column reduces loads on head and chest as it collapses and retracts away from the driver in high-speed frontal impacts. Both front seats are fitted with more effective retractor pretensioners, along with belt load limiters. Rear seat passengers are protected by three-point seat belts.

I would have thought this would be standard on the TITANIUM??
Sports Executive Pack
Adaptive Cruise Control
Bi-Xenon HID headlights with static cornering lamps and integrated LED daytime running lights
Power tilt/slide sunroof
TITANIUM should be "special"..reading the specifications, its not much different to the Sport??
Whats with the name changes ??? AMBIENTE..TREND very Euro (VW)
Be interesting to see in the metal!!! Pricing ??
I hope FORD get the advertising right and it sells a ship load..

No doubt they were labelled wrong in the PR.

Certainly the whole interior clearly illustrates how far behind the curve Falcon is in this regard.

Yeah those first pics are definitely in the wrong order. No way in hell the Titanium will have plastic wheel covers and no foggies!

I would edit the tags but don't have the ability to. I am sure people will work it out.

There are many many PRACTICAL things a Falcon can do that a Focus cant.

In saying that the Focus is a world car and it shows. A diesel would make a good daily.

the speed limiting button is actually a good idea. My mum has a Citroen C4 that has this, you just twist a little nob and put it at 70 , 90, 150 ;-) or what ever and it wont let you go past that speed. Good for actually driving and not having to watch your speedo if scared about cameras or whatever. On the C4 its not a harsh cut out either like a rev limiter, its soft and you just lose power when you get there.

Also the focus looks great!!

Holy crap, I saw one of these down at the Rosebud shops, I was behind it gazing at it with a confused face thinking "I've never seen that sort of Focus before o_O?!"

It looked gorgeous, and I'd love one if I had the money :P

That is one hell of a car! The body is still growing on me. The hatch looks better without the high D pillar mount lights, good move. The steering wheel looks fantastic, and looks very comfy!

Interesting point is the:

Quote:
Speed Limiter helps avoid unintentional speeding
The Ford Adjustable Speed Limiting Device (ASLD) allows drivers to set their own personal speed limit, so that in demanding conditions – such as in unfamiliar city streets, or passing through extended roadworks on the freeway – they can concentrate on the road ahead without the worry of unintentionally driving too fast. This supports safer, less stressful driving, and reduces the chance of receiving unwanted speeding tickets.

Stunning interior, shame about the exterior.

If I was shopping for a small car I'd get a black one to hide the ugliness.

TDCi Titanium sedan = 1543kg
