“Supermarket giant Coles has announced it will sell hundreds of its Coles Express-branded petrol stations around Australia as the business focuses on its food and liquor offering. Informing shareholders this morning, Coles said it will receive $300 million from the sale of the petrol stations to Viva Energy, which has been supplying fuel from its Geelong refinery. All 710 Coles Express stations will be rebranded, but Coles customers will still have access to the four cent per litre fuel docket program, and Viva Energy will remain a partner of Flybuys.“

Looking forward to driving past them, and laughing at the fools using 4c discount dockets for fuel priced 20c a litre more than the servo down the road.
Always more expensive than anyone else. BP a close second. |

Coles must see a fairly limited future in selling petrol.
Selling out now might turn out to be a smart move, when looking back in 10 years time. |

Not sure why I’ve seen so many people say they are the most expensive sellers. They seem to be the same price as all surrounding servos in my experience.
It looks like nothing will change at all for the customer except the sign and logo. |

In Geelong they’re always the first to go up and the slowest to come down.

You've never noticed that our Coles/Shell is consistently 10-20c higher than anyone else in town?

Probably trying to recoup some money after having to fork out all the backpay to team that they should have been paying them to begin with.

They are always more expensive in north west sydney. So much so I’m amazed people even go there at all when the alternatives are so much cheaper and close by.

Coles couldn't see a short term return on investment of installing pay to use EV charging stations. Shell looking to the longer term as they have done in Europe. Expect to see Shell following Ampol in investing more into the EV charging stations.

Shell aren't in the oil industry in Australia. The sold off their petroleum assets to Vitol. Vitol is the parent company of Viva Energy (the company buying the Coles express outlets). Viva have the rights to use the Shell name.

Hope Viva keeps the same windscreen cleaner that Shell uses. They worked a real treat. Only reason why I do a stop over at shell these days, due to their rip off pricing. That and their tyre pumps seem to be the most accurate and reliable.

The only one that is constantly cheaper is an independent trading as Transwest fuels. Sometimes the 4c/l makes Shell the cheapest option.

I'd think its more likely they plan on entering into a partnership to provide EV charging at the supermarket car parks. If its going take 20-40 minutes to get decent charge into your EV it encourages you to spend more time inside shopping while your EV is on charge. Spending 20-40 minutes at your local servo on the other hand, doesn't feel like a natural fit to me for many with busy lifestyles. I don't even like going into the cash register to pay any more - I seek out servos where you pay at the pump... |

Actually the other day I noticed a Coles Express was one of the cheapest stations in town. 155.9 where most others were about 160.9 to 190.9 |

How do they survive if they do this with so many other service stations nearby?
I’ve never really come across this locally except a few times on the highways leaving town where there’s no other close by service stations. However with the app keeping them honest I don’t even see that as much anymore. |

Unbelievable eh! Viva energy refinery is in or near Gellong right but Viva still gouge even though transport and distribution cost would be less compared to everywhere else. |

Out here it's the only shop open late as well, you get heaps of kids buying stuff all the time. Servo had a way better barista than the bakery near work and shed give us free donuts and goodies on the regular. Makes me wonder if they're making money from that side of things and that's how they compete. |

I'm pretty sure the independent I buy my fuel from uses Shell/Viva's fuel as well, which makes the price difference even more absurd. |

For many years now in my area Shell service stations have also been the most expensive or right up there compared to others, ironically there really isn't many Shell stations around in town either, more BP then any of the others, a couple independents, Caltex also.
There is one Shell station heading into the CBD area which is on the major road in and is only 200 odd metres from a BP. I pass both these daily on my commute, it would be a rare day to see the Shell servo sitting at the same or below the BP, there is usually a good 10c+ difference with Shell being the highest. But I always see people there getting fuel when they would have passed the BP just moments prior, maybe they have a fuel card for Shell or just prefer the brand but it has always baffled me to witness this. |
