Working on cars I have seen this many times, I thought I would post this to help you make up your mind when you are buying a car and you are being pushed into adding an anti rust package, by the way the LED flashes and the photo just caught it in the off condition.

I just posted what I saw you can make your own mind up. Maybe the rust was there first but I would have thought money spent on this unit would have been better spent on repairing the rust. |

i cannot say for sure that it works, but i cannot believe it is a coincidence that it needed some minor repairs on a semi regular basis, but once the unit was fitted, nothing has shown up |

Well, there is no reason why the should work, there is no science to it.
And in the US, the companies are not allowed to advertise the products...as they dont work...

A battery already does that :-)
These are ment to work on a Cathodic Protection princable, where, as you said, they put a negative charge through the chassis etc (as a battery does), it works in the likes of boats, buildings etc, where the object is grounded. Are car however, is insulated with by the tires... See lots of cars with these units, and there is still rust on some of them. Bit like Shoo-Roos/Roo whistles... We get cars that come in with roo damage, and we always replace the whistles that have been smashed of by the roo lol

If it works then good for you.
I used to Tectyl my cars in the past, then tried fish oil. I found the fish oil worked better when I had to repeatedly repair the rear wheel arch of an EA Falcon I used to own! |

a battery doesn't seem to put the negative charge, otherwise i would never have been zapped from static electricity
maybe an earth strap would work just as well as an erps |

It all depends on the type of device and the way it is installed.
I've got a CoupleTec one in my car myself. Can't say for sure if it works... but cant say that it doesnt either as there is no sign of any rust.

i have fish oiled, kill rusted everywhere i could reach and don't let the night air touch mine. if it works or not does not really matter to me. it was only $395 and no rust has happened since i got it - i certainly have no regrets, but more importantly, i have confidence in my car not rusting . . . justified or not, that feeling is priceless |

I've had a Couplertec on the wagon for the 6 years we've owned it and no rust has shown itself to date. Even the paint still shines when I bother to wash the old girl and it spends it's entire life out in the weather. Personally I think some units work better than others and I reacon it all comes down to how well you connect the electrodes. I'd bet a few home installed units that didn't work could be traced to faulty fitting of the electrodes.

I have had a couplertec on my XC for years zero rust anywhere and was a daily driver for around 3 years sitting in the weather at work.

These things need to be installed precisely to work properly. In theory they do work, but if let down by poor installation they wont perform. I reckon some of the ones fitted by dealers and caryards are the worst ones. They use cheap unproven devices and they probably dont even know how to fit them properly. I do understand why they have a bad reputation though because of this. I fitted mine as preventative maintanence and so far I've been happy. No signs of rust on any of the body work, even where the paint has been chipped.

The OP's photo shows the device installed just where water runoff goes under the bonnet on BA's. Not a very bright idea. But BA's commonly rust there anyway.
Spraying fishoil there instead (as I did right at that spot on my BA) would have done a lot better to prevent the rust shown there. I think we've had this debate before, some people adamant that they actually work. But there is lots of evidence and reasoning why they dont. |

I don't think they would work, like those roo whistles. I've seen them on cars before and they've had rust. Last car I saw one on was a 4X4 which had been used offroad lots and it wasn't doing much there, there was rust and corrosion everywhere. If you've got one and it works for you then sweet, its one of those topics you will never agree on. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 02-10-2012 at 09:38 PM. |

I sold them for the company that started them off in Australia.
Those ones worked ... if installed correctly. There are so many copies around now that don't work, I'm afraid the image is tarnished forever and so debates like this flourish. |
