So I was reading the letter section of the latest Wheels mag and there was a guy who had written in complaining that he had bought an Opel back in July for $37k and had recently taken it in to get a trade in value which was $17k. That prompted me to go on Carsales and check them out but in my opinion the pricing wasn't that fantastic. There are new Astra OPC's from $38-45k. I think RRP was around $46k on road. Given that Opel have now shut up shop, and the example above, what sort of discount would make you consider one? 10%, 20%, 30%, more?

I looked at the diesel wagon Nov last year, tempting, but the circa 7k discount wasn't enough to make me spend. When I found it was from a certain dealership that I would love to see shut down they would need to give it to me....

Warranty is covered by Holden I believe. Parts are pretty easily accessible via the net, being a reasonably popular brand in Europe. I guess I would consider one if that were my thing. Pretty reasonable car, and something pretty rare on Australian roads. As some have said the price would have to be right. Min would be 20% of RRP

Not sure if Opel pulling up stumps is all the reason for the low trade in price.

Well I was looking at the Zafria and most have come down from around 43k to 38's..they will keep going and I think represent a good buy for the savvy owner. How they are supported is another issue, I wouldnt expect more than 3-5 years of gmh help.

As I recall, when the guy was having a whinge about depreciation of his Opel he said he bought it as an ex-demo and mentioned the new car's RRP but never said how much he actually paid for his ex-demo example. He was also whining that when he took it for a trade-in valuation (why?) after Opel closed down the dealer offered him a lowball price - not surprising since his example was used and now an orphan brand.
Bottom line for mine is that he must have been happy with the car and the deal at the time of sale otherwise he wouldn't have bought it. Picking something like an Opel Astra instead of a Golf, Focus, Mazda3 etc was always going to be a higher risk option on resale, he rolled the dice and lost. It happens in life sometimes... |

Crazy, buy ANY car for 37k and have it "valued" 12 months later by the dealer, of course it will drop by that much. The wheels whinger needs to drive it for 3-7 yrs ( the average length of time a new car is kept) and will then find it is worth no more or less than any other brand.

Would own an OPC Astra in a heartbeat. Nearly did but it was a tad out of my reach when I purchased my ST.

We now know why they are gone. Will be back here in a couple of years as Holdens. Just like Daewoo.

An Opel/Vauxhaul would have much better quality next to a daewoo so hardly comparable.

Quite nice design for a small car (interior space and quietness) but terrible execution - Spanish made. That and a VP Commodore drove us away from GMH into Ford's arms. I discovered later that the VP Commodore had an issue with the front seatbelts that would result in certain death for the driver at a collision over 56 km/h. They rectified it in the subsequent model but didn't tell anybody with earlier models about it. With that sort of corporate morality (and crap cars) I'm quite happy to see the back of Holden. |

new2ford it was the last of the series, a MY2000, honest to god it was gold.
I do understand the first few years of that series was utter rubbish.

But we were lost to Holden by then. Recent experience of a Cruze has only deepened the distaste! |
