Unhappy Look at what we found.

Well The Maddestman and I have started the heart transplant on the EB...



Anyone want to attempt to diagnose the problem with the old engine? :

That'll buff right out, lol!

Mmmm, who else wants liquid and sludge in their throttle body and intake system? It was full of that crap all the way from the throttle body to a pool of it inside the air box under the air filter, which was visable as soon as the air filter was removed.

The mechanic it was brought to when it stopped said he couldn't work out why the engine wouldn't start - I'm willing to bet he didn't even bother looking properly, just tried starting it and said it wouldn't start, hoping you would say "ok, if it needs a new engine, do it", when it has come to our attention that they havn't even bothered to ensure the air filter wasn't clogged when they've "serviced" it...

Tell you what, I would not want to be him on Monday morning...

Well seeing as I still have all the reciepts with all the things that were "allegedly" changed, checked and repaired all marked out clearly, all hell will break loose at 8.30am on Monday morning. :

/me starts thinking of all the cuss words I can to call my mechanic.. :

That mechanic is going to get a double can of whoopass Good, sounds like he deserves it.

Yes I can relate to the "yep... it's ya carby" cos we stopped being members of the NRMA roadside assistance service many years ago. Called them up for issues now and then and they would come out, take one look at the LPG system and say "Oh I can't touch the car, it's LPG". Even for non-related LPG stuff :(

D*ckheads. I hate shonky mechanics. There is one two towns up who the whole family call Dodgy Dave or Dave the Butcher.

Get that guy Luv and Mad And take pics of you shoving his head up the exhaust pipe :newangel:

The oil in the t/b is common as the rocker breather plumbs to it & draws out any mist.
Im not sure of the details but it looks like 2 things, either the engine was left to the rain, or
2 theres a leak from the EGR spacer, it houses coolant thru the spacer to cool down the egr gasses abit.
Gasket may have gone or the nuts werent tight enuff.

Another nasty surprise was awaiting us, the cooling system that I had (or at least I thought I had because that's what I paid them for) thoroughly flushed out including all the hoses, radiator and new coolant. Well it wasn't, it is full of black crud, it looks like I was ripped and all they did was just put new coolant in it. We haven't taken out the radiator yet, in fact I don't think I want to, damn I'm pi$$ed off! :

I wonder what other nasty surprises are awaiting us?

A bit of oil will be normal in the inlet manifold, all part of the PCV system.

However that much clean water is a concern. Siezed due to hydraulic lock? Perhaps, but the fact the water is clear is odd.

That's what I thought. I wonder how so much of it got there... And if it had been checked properly by the mechanic (who obviously didn't check for water in the intake system like he said he did), if the engine would be in better condition now...

It hasn't been thrashed in the last 3 years or so, in all the time LuvinmyEB has had it. It has been serviced regularly, never been neglected and has hardly ever had the throttle wide open. It had given no signs of any problems, asides from getting a bit too hot in hot weather, which was "fixed" as soon as the problem arose.

It was running beautifully right up to the day the engine seized, and there was no warning, and considering she had paid regularly to ensure it was in tip-top condition, we certainly didn't expect something as major as a seized engine.

Yep, certainly did, and that one is much cleaner. Should we clean up the old air box and plastic hoses (and if so, what is the best way to do it?), or should we just replace them?

They should clean up fine, a bit of degreaser to loosen the lot up then blast em out with a high pressure hose and let them dry out.

Yes the car did go for a little swim that morning, however it only came up to just under my doors and it was dirty water not clear. I still don't think that the swim it went for is what has caused the water in the throttle body.

That water had to be in there before I drove the car the day it seized but we're at a loss as to how it got there. :

Back to pulling the radiator out...

And before that pic was taken, at least a third of the water was spilt.

There was also evidence of water in the 4th cylinder, just by looking at the 4th spark plug, which looks like it had started to rust! We'll know more tomorrow when we get the head off, we've run out of light so it'll have to wait until then.

i still reckon its swallowed a large dose of flood water....

the car would have locked up almost as soon as the water got in there so if it was in their earlier in the morning it would have locked up sooner.....

cars dont like going swimming, water doesnt compress like air / fuel vapour.... it simply stops if the revs are low enough, or if its revving high then it will bend valves, rods, snap crankshafts or whatever it likes

Have you bothered to try and drain the fuel tank?
and is there water in that?

Whilst the water was just under your doors....the other place of entry could be the exhaust pipe. Did you stall and have to restart?

No the fuel tank hasn't been drained yet, I'll probably have a look at that tomorrow.

When I was in the water the car did just stall and when I tried to start it, it just refused flat out to start properly, but you could hear it trying to crank over, it would get to a certain point and then it would just stop. Yes the exhaust would have been under water at the time, but not the tip, only a small part of the exhaust that needs to be repaired.
