Percentage who would buy another vehicle of the same Make

G'day,

I was looking at www.carsurvey.org and was impressed with how many reviews were actually documented. With all that data I found it difficult to be able to get a snapshot of what make of vehicle was actually preferred over another. The site makes it easy to look at Models, but not Makes.

So last night I decided to go through each Make that is commonly available here in Australia and look at the top three Models reviewed for each Make and record the percentage of drivers who would buy another Model. I then averaged the three to come to a final percentage that I could use to get my snapshot. In some cases, if the vehicle was not sold in Australia, I would not use that data. I determined if a vehicle was sold in Australia by looking it up on a well known sales website. This snapshot is a basic statistical picture of the overall satisfaction of owners for the top three models reviewed.

Below are my statistical findings.

Attached is the detailed xls documenting how I came about the above figures. The weakness of these findings is that I only used three models of each make commonly available in Australia. The strength lies in the incredible amount of reviews on the site which allowed me to collect data.

Umm, in that the cars reviewed were Falcon, Fairmont and Laser I suspect the data may be a bit old.......

Peugeot data is very old also. 306, 205 and 106 models, all of which haven't been on sale in dealerships for a very, very long time. We're at the 208 and 308 models now. I don't even think the 106 was sold here in Australia!

As to would I buy another Ford or Peugeot as they are the cars I own? Yes to both of them, if the model range on offer at the time suits what I would be looking for.

But for Ford you chose Falcon, Fairmont, Laser

You should have done Berlina or Calais and Commodore and Camira. Score

So using Calais and Commodore and Camira. Which seems like a good match for Falcon, Fairmont. The score was 81.33

Point taken. However, I did not make any judgements, just calculated the top three model reviews. For Holdens, the top three were Commodore, Astra and Vectra. For Ford Australia, the top three were Falcon, Fairmont and Laser. I totally agree that the Fairmont and Falcon are essentially the same vehicle but this clearly was not the view of the reviewers.

Yes, the data spans decades so take the statistics for what they really are - just a snapshot of various Makes.

Excellent point. I have deleted the 106 and replaced with data for the 307. This brings Puegeot to 60.7%

Props for going to so much effort davistev but this kind of dataset is extremely unreliable and must be taken with a grain of salt.

People tend to have what is called 'selective reporting' whereby they only report things that are interesting/unusual - meaning that people who submit reviews to Carsurveys tend to do so only when they've either had a really good or a really bad experience with a car. This skews the results. It excludes 'Mr Average' - the Toyota Tarago owner who was nonplussed by his or her vehicle.

In addition, the vehicles you've chosen aren't really that representative of each make. Laser went out of production 10 years ago and the Falcon & Fairmont have been pretty much the same car from day dot. What is a Kia Sephia? I've never even heard of that one. How come you didn't include the Mazda 6 or the Mazda 3 instead of the 626 and 323? Again, these vehicles went out of production in 2003. Why did you include the Celica instead of the Hilux? Hilux has been one of Toyota's best sellers for 20+ years.

Yes people are still driving these cars but they are in the minority - they don't represent the average Mazda owner or the average Ford owner or the average Toyota owner, etc. This data is just too unreliable to draw any conclusions.
