What was the first car you worked on?

Weather it be a Blown head gasket, or just a simple oil change, what was the first car you got the tools out and started working on by yourself?

Myself I've workeod on plenty of cars at dealerships, but the first car I'd ever worked on was my brother in-laws 1998 3.0 v6 magna (not the best of starts!), which was 12,000 km overdue for a service (no word of a lie), and with my sister being concerned about him and him being too stubborn to get it serviced, I just got up, grabbed his keys and told him I'll do it myself.

The very first car I worked on by myself was my 1954 Austin A50 in 1968, I removed the engine and had it recon'd. It was a little like this one but in black.

For me it was my old HT Kingswood that I got given to me by my dad as a 14th birthday present. I replaced the rusty front guards and bonnet, Replaced the bench seat with bucket seats and also put on a set of mags.

I'm not really mechanically minded as such, I don't know much about what goes on under the bonnet - I probably know more than the average Joe but wouldn't really know how to do too much under there.

But on my 1974 KE20 Corolla when I had it, it was my first car, I used to sand patches of surface rust back to metal, until there was no more sign, and then respray out of the rattle cans.

This was her, before she was stolen in 1999 and ran up the back of a flatbed truck at speed... somehow the thieves escaped but yeah, I'd probably still have this car today if it wasn't for that...

Dont know if you can call it work, but the first car I hacked away at was a XC falcon. Over tightened lots of bolts, broke lots of components, mods that screamed 18 year old P plater. I was also guilty of alot of tool abuse.
The XE in my avatar was the first car I modded/worked on properly.

Not too far away from Papa Smurf .. It was an old A70. The engine you couldn't kill BUT the rims where rubbish .. The nuts pulled through the rims.. I guess they weren't designed
for the grip of radials ?? Real work was on Mk 1 Cortina and latter Mk1 Escort..

Crikey! That's the same car I got my licence in... right down to the colour!

The first time I had to turn a spanner was on my 1966 MG...probably in 1986. I managed to shatter the thrust bearing on the clutch, and a piece lodged between the flywheel and the bell housing.

I thought the motor had seized, and lifted it out to find the real cause of the problem. I've always treated cars more gentle since then.

1975 GC Galant sedan - became very proficient at changing oil air and fuel filters, flushing the coolant system once a fortnight, replacing front and rear universal joints and plugs and points.

I probably helped Dad work on cars earlier (don't remember). But I do remember my first car, a 1961 Studebaker Lark .. I pulled the 259 v8 and dismantled it. My Dad helped me reassemble it with new rings and bearings .. Which in the days before the internet were sourced at Repco by cross matching specs with other vehicles. I think the rings came from a Holden? Not sure about the bearings?

First one I worked on was by brothers XU1, then lots of different cars while helping out local service station after school and on weekends then lots more between year 11 and 12, where inbetween working on my 50cc Motobecane moped to try and keep it going between busting off the number plate monos and enduro work :-) I did heaps of ta style work on lots of cars and changed more tyres than I care to remember. Then when I got my own first car, a 318 4-speed VK Charger I did plenty of work on that in quick fashion that saw it stroked to 355, full manual valve bodied torqueflite, disc brake 9-inch, Konis etc. etc.
