Default be thankful for Ford 'Aussie' Power

Came across this in an ls1 forum - these are the specs for the american 2006 ford mustang...note a few things:
Mustang GT: 300hp 4.6lt V8
V6 version: 210hp

by anothers calculations, thats roughly 220kw and 154kw respectively. Thats pretty underpowered, so be happy your GT's, XR6T's, XR8's, GT-P's, Typhoons etc are not in line with the american counterparts in the performance sector. :

I agree, but the GT500 isnt that bad. Power figure is now up from 475hp to 500hp!!! Not bad considering the Corvette has the same power yet costs more.

Yeap,

Have looked into the latest Mustangs very closely. The XR8 has 350hp in US terms which is quite a big hammer under the bonnet. However the Mustang GT out of the box goes 0-60 in under 6 seconds and 1/4's in under 14's all this for a price of $29,000 US, very good value for a hall of fame car.

In saying that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the XR8 and FPV V8's performance keeping in mind that they are typically 150kg heavier than there equiv Holden.

reality check- 220kw is a lot of power... my VT2 LS1 has 220kw, and i know over the years they have added more to each new model - but my 220kw doesnt feel underpowered compared to my father's 245kw

375kw GT500 Mustang will be sold in the US for about the same price as a 260kw XR8 Falcon here. So what am I thankful again for?

True, but people who'll buy the vette wont really take it to the track now would they? and yes the Z06 will probably have a weight advantage of over 300kg, but considering the GT500 will cost about US$25k cheaper, have 2 extra seats at the back, a good sized boot, plus its got a supercharger, i think the stangs the more user friendly of the 2.

Yes but considering that the GT500 is a supercharged V8, what would your XR8 be with a blower on it? It would probably achive more then 375Kw pretty easily....

Agreed. How can you say 220kw from 4.6L is underpowered when the base 5.4L V8 in a Falcon produces the same power .. and the 5.7L from VT11 SS produced the same power in 1999 .. and before that a 5.7L HSV stoker only produced 215kw in the 'ole VS Commodore??

Owned?? I don't think so... A suspension thats as good as tieing your shoe laces together and trying to run around. There are better ways of getting around. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of the new Mustang, however its light weight is offset by its girder rear suspension.

Mustangs weigh alot less..

But in gear where the weight and a good launch don't matter as much ours would be all over theirs. Plus I hear the Mustangs actually take off at 220 kmph and flip several times..

Mustang is a sports car, Falcon is a family muscle car.

Our sedans crap all over theirs. Crown Vic weighs the same, is bigger on the outside, smaller inside, gets lumped with a ~170kw V8.

Our six cylinders top out at 270kw, the V8's at 290. If ford had a more powerful affordable V8, we would proberly have that too.

It also demonstrates the power war aussie manufacturers are having, right now. 190kw sixes, Turbos, monster V8's, six litre engines. Fantastic stuff.

The Americans develop performance cars differently to Australian's.
American Performance vehicles are normally purpose built mid sized 2 door coupes, in Australia we "hot-up" full sized family sedans, you can't really compare them.

well, firstly your comparing the mustang to a base model falcon for power ...and yep they are similar - so what does that say about the boss 290 then?
and i dont think 220kw is quick by any means - i have been driving around with 270kw and still think thats slow, so i dont know how 220 is quick.

You seem to be missing the point SSBUB, the Mustang costs about the same as a base model Falcon.

Your car cost $50k new with 220kw, GT-500 costs about the same in the US and comes with 375kw.

Kilowatts is a measure of power, not speed! :

100KW in a light weight bike is frighteningly quick, 220kw for a car that weighs 1600kg's would produce decent times, high 13's and sub 6 sec 0-100 most likely, 290kw's in a car that weighs 1800kgs is enough power for a high 13 in the GT.

So what is your point?

You've obviously only about 25yo, 'cos if you were driving anything prior to '99 with an "incredible" 180kw or so, you thought you were king-of-the-hill!!
BTW: The factory rating for a 426Hemi is 425hp (approx .. 320kw). Even with differences in measuring power between now and then, the Hemi was seriously under-rated, so it's fair to assume it's more powerful than you GenIII ... but amazingly any Hemi-powered car is probably slower than yours over 1/4 mile?! Power/torque ain't everything remember ..

Still, the question begs to be answered...why the hell dont Ford US look at the Aussie Falcons as an option for them instead? Keep the mustang but get with of those Spontaneously Combusting boring Crown Vics!!

I drove a 2006 V6 Mustang in that colour the last time I was in the states. I loved it, if they sold them here I'd trade in the XR6 and get one (assuming it wasn't too expensive).

Its called protecting their own economy and their people. By building these Crown Vics that sound like cubain Aircon units they are keeping employment and taking cars aside they do have a point.

Which brings me to another topic why I disagree about governments putting bans on power for local cars. If the supercar scare never happened in the 70's we would not have these Japanese imports comming in semi illegally and taking sales of our local product.
